Title: University Deregulation, what are your thoughts?
Post by: qazser on January 18, 2016, 11:04:49 am
I might be doing an oral on this topic, and it would be great to hear your thoughts on this as it does and will affect everyone of us now and in the future.

Thanks in advance,
Qazser

Might not be a good thing, probably prices will go up I think.

Pros -
=> Theoretically can induce competition between the universities, driving up innovation and investment and quality teaching.
=> The extra cash for the universities may, in the long run, push up their research output and prestige.

Right now under the status quo, universities are cash strapped to epic proportions; there is a medical school that is so short of money that it doesn't offer any lectures in first year at all.

Cons -
=> Students will be saddled in ridiculous amounts of debt.

Revived after 3 months hehe. Agree on Thush's and gstaah's points.

"University rankings" are primarily denoted by the quality of research output from academia within the university. However, an increase in prices can potentially lead to more resources or better academias but what does that mean for us students? A university professor might have the knowledge to write xx thesis but can he/she convey this information to us?

Don't see how uni deregulation could possibly be of any positive impact on us. It is merely the universities that benefit from this increased source of income.
