Title: VCE Extended Investigation Discussion Thread!
Post by: Photon on February 28, 2016, 04:12:09 pm
I know it's pointless to set up this thread because only like 5 people are doing EI this year (LOL). But I have hope that some time in the future people would actually make use of this as a thread for discussing their topics as well as their EI journeys. I know that Macrob's as well as JMSS and EBSS (shout out to my EI class) are offering this subject so it'd be great if you guys can share your current topics/questions for discussion sake.  ;D

Just to kick it off for you photon. So far my topic involves searching for a lepton-number violating muon decay in the CMS experiment at the LHC. I'm not entirely sure which one so far and the feasibility of doing so in the period of time we have; although I will be discussing it tomorrow with my mentor. How about you?

I was hoping that someone from a different school would reply but okay.

My reaction to your topic: LOL is that even English?

Still looking into the reactivation of the aids virus. Going to decided the feasibility of it tomorrow with my tutor mentor  ::)

What is the aids virus? O.o

I see what you're trying to do but I won't let you make me contradict myself. : ^ )

Yo, I'm actually doing the subject right now and it's surprisingly fun. I know there's probably little hope of you replying back since it's been quite a while since the last post (me and my bad timing XD) but I thought it would be awesome to have someone to talk once in a while about E.I and heck wouldn't hurt right? I decided to study good ol' refugees for my question and writing out all the ethic consent forms are a pain in the butt right now. TT.TT

How's it going over there for you (or anyone else doing E.I)?

Don't worry, photon is frequent around these parts.

EI is both my favorite and least favorite subject at the same time. It is a huge drain but I have a great interest in my topic, which has changed a lot since my last post here.

Do you have any luck with your method? The upcoming SAC is scary, I'm really not too sure of the details for mine. ):

Also, what is your question?

Ayyyy. We actually found someone else.  I'm really enjoying EI, do you guys also get mentors at your school? I'm not sure if it's an optional thing or if it's required for all EI students.

Hahahahaha, you smart science kids terrify me. :P It seems that the rest of my class are on the opposite end of the spectrum doing humanity topics, we've even got somebody doing a topic on Genghis Khan which is awesome. I'm really passionate about refugees so I decided to do a comparative case study of refugee resettlement experiences across time. Downside is I'm probably going to have to do 6 interviews about 3 hours long each. It'll be worth it but man, that long just for gathering data  :'(

I shed blood, sweat and tears to write my SAC 1 and still ended up with a really bad significance :-\. My english teacher said it was too clunky and edited the whole entire thing to save her sanity. Methodology was surprisingly the easiest for me.

Nah we don't get one on one mentors over here. It's basically just a class of 17 kids sharing 2 mentors and more than half the kids come from a different school. Our schools just combined our E.I classes together so there would be more kids and it would make the class seem bigger. Ain't that lovely XD.

I completely forgot that EI isn't only for Science. I would have probably gotten shot if I said I wanted to do a question that isn't science-related.

Wow, sounds like you put a lot of work into your  SAC 1. Don't worry it will end up getting scaled up like crazy so it doesn't matter anyways, plus it's only 7% of your score.

Wait so you're doing a case-study and interview? That sounds intense.

Doing a science topic sounds pretty cool and to be fair, when I first heard of E.I, it didn't even occur to me that it was for science as well since nearly everyone else I knew who did the subject in the last two years did a humanities topic.

Wow, that was actually pretty shocking as I wrote that.

There are a few people doing stuff about empathy but no one's going all out crazy to have anything to do with photons (lel, I see that's pretty popular) or blowing things up which is a damn shame. Anyway what are you guys doing now at this point?

I'm really sorry for the late reply xD. I haven't been on AN in a while.

I submitted my SAC 2 last week and I haven't gotten my results back. I'm hoping I did well. Have you submitted yours?

I have already started my data collection but it's not much as of now. What about you guys?

Also has anyone else realised that SAC 3 is pretty much identical to SAC 2 except it's in a presentation format?

As I am at the same school as Photon I also just submitted SAC 2, and starting my method. By starting, I mean trying to get the software I need downloaded -_____-

It seems like, in SAC 3, it is done intentionally to see if you can explain your topic verbally; which is a major component in the end of year assessment. I am personally glad, at least it will be quite a bit easier to complete.

That's true. We just have to do well in SAC 2 and then we're pretty much set for SAC 3.

Does anyone know how SAC scaling is going to work for EI? Is it the same with other subjects except the SACs get scaled up according to the final report instead of the exam or is it different?

Hahahah sorry for the late reply but I haven't even began data collecting yet for my research. Finding participants for my subjects has been the hardest thing this month and so far, I've only managed to find just one. I need 6 by the end of this week and i'm wondering how in hell I'm ever going to do that.

On a side note I'm really pumped up for the oral report, I need to change my background a bit but everything else is okay. Hmm i don't know about the scaling for the final report but I'm pretty sure the critical test goes up by a lot. Apparently even a 70% is considered high O.o

Oh that must suck. I didn't like doing a literature review because it's not as exciting as the other options but getting work done is a lot easier as well.

My oral is tomorrow and I'm nervous that my oral won't be good enough or the assessors  would ask really hard questions.

I hate how critical thinking is really important because it's so confusing. It requires a bit of creativity and I'm not creative at all. I'm going to have to cram like hell over the holidays to get a decent score on the test.

Good luck with finding your participants. I'm sure you'll figure something out.

Can you please help me with coming up with a EI topic
I got an interview at ebss and has no clue what to do for EI like what would I even I say if they ask me what is your rough idea for a possible EI
I enjoy physics and chemistry not that keen on bio will still do it though

Thanks

Critical thinking hype!!!!

Hahahaha I got owned by the critical thinking test. I was so tired that I mixed up the two 6 mark questions and only realised half way through what I was doing. Here's to hoping I scrape by with 3 marks for each.

Can you please help me with coming up with a EI topic

Wow, ebss is tough for making all their year 11 kids do E.I. since it can be quite a taxing subject if you don't find a topic your interested in doing at all. Seriously though, I guess a question like this is really one for the science teaches since I ended up choosing a humanities topic for E.I  :P

However if I had to say something, I guess try looking at  current science magazines particularly journals focused around physics and chemistry. That way, you can gain insight into the current 'hot' topics for research however I think regardless of the topics you choose right now, as long as it's something not too mainstream and you can convincingly argue is substantially important for society than your set for the interviews. In fact that might be a good place to start if you really want to look for something unique to research by focusing on the current issues society faces today. Well that's all the advice I can give but if you need any more ideas I found a website online which might be of some help:

I got thoroughly destroyed by the practice test but I don't feel too bad about the actual one this year.

Yeah it sucks, quite a bit of people managed to drop the subject but those who don't want to do it but are forced to are going for the bare minimum.

How's your EI topic going Maddie? Have you started your final report yet?
