Title: oral presentation help
Post by: molecular. on April 14, 2016, 06:56:40 pm
Hey guys, I need some advice on my oral presentation. I have decided to do climate change and go against it but I do not know how to start my intro with a bang. I really want to capture the audience from the first sentence but I have no idea how to. I understand that people will say use an anecdote, metaphor or a quote but I have no ideas.

Hey guys, I need some advice on my oral presentation. I have decided to do climate change and go against it but I do not know how to start my intro with a bang. For starters, what exactly do you mean by being 'against' climate change? You might find it tricky to argue against the existence of something, so what would your contention be?

Then, consider what things you'd find engaging about a speech. If you'd say down in a lecture theatre or clicked on a TED Talk, what things could the speaker do to make things interesting? The easiest way to do this is to make your issue highly relevant to your audience. Assuming you're addressing your class/teacher and your school doesn't make you pretend to be a politician talking to parliament or anything, this should be fairly easy. Consider how and why climate change is a particularly important thing for our generation to care about, and try to compose an intro that targets those particular emotions or reasons.

Avoid the overly cliche 'Close your eyes and imagine a world where...' beginnings since most teachers will see them as kind of cheap tricks, and whilst using metaphors or quotes can work well, you don't want to just stick one at the start without integrating it with the rest of your speech. All this will depend on what line of argument you're taking, though, so revising and refining your contention should be your first step :)
