Title: [Ask Me Anything] #1: Orb
Post by: Joseph41 on August 11, 2016, 06:07:02 pm
By now, I hope you're all *hyped*!

Welcome to the first instalment of ATAR Notes' Ask Me Anything series! How does it work? Basically, each week (roughly), you'll have the opportunity to ask a different user whatever you want! School-related, uni-related, favourite-Bachelor-contestant-related, life-related, sport-related, *whatever-you-want*-related. The potential benefits are many, the potential downfalls are few.

Starting off is (pretend it's not in the thread title)...

Orb
.

Orb has been an incredibly helpful member of AN since joining in mid-2012, and now moderates the VCE Maths and Science boards. Here's all you need to know:

Quote from: Orb
I'm Orb (a.k.a Rob), currently a first year at UniMelb studying Commerce, planning to major in Finance and Economics and hopefully end up in Investment Banking and Education once I'm enjoyed enough of those 80 hour work weeks ;P
Academically, I took Maths Methods, Specialist Maths, English, Chemistry, Chinese and Monash Extension Maths in my VCE journey, so feel free to ask me anything regarding those subjects!
I love basketball (NBA YES), debating, chess, watching TV (including anime!) and doing some good old reading from time to time :D

Remember, stay respectful! And enjoy. :)

Something relatively tame to start off:

Why did you choose UoM, and did you consider other unis? Did you always want to study Commerce?

Yay!! Super excited to see how this turns out :)

Something relatively tame to start off:

Why did you choose UoM, and did you consider other unis? Did you always want to study Commerce?

Personally, must admit that I'm a bit of a sucker for prestige and all that, so in all reality, my picks were between Melb and Monash. Happened to live pretty far away from Monash (2 hours one way and I live in metro melb!) so despite completing Monash Maths in Year 12 (which was quite fun), ended up picking Melb.

I really only had two VTAC preferences put in with Unimelb commerce at the top of that because I knew that this was pretty much the course for me. Didn't want to go into med like most of my friends, Arts was appealing but would meet strong resistance from parents, didn't quite like the large number of pracs in Science (a lot of people do, though, just personal preference)!

But yeah, that's how my uni selection process went like! :)

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Favourite anime? Why?

What does it take to do well in a subject at uni, for you?

1.  Hopefully an investment banker, but also managing my time well enough so I can still do a bit of tutoring on the side :) Also kind of want to go travelling, i'm a massive fan of the outdoors and nature :D

2. You got me here :D Personally my favourite has got to be One Punch Man (i know, quite mainstream). I couldn't stop laughing with each and every single EP (made my week), can't wait for Season 2 though!
Honourable mentions: Hunter x Hunter, Steins Gate

3. HAHAHAHA i'm probably not the best person to ask for this (check out Zsteve and his 93.5 WAM), but personally I find that it is really, REALLY important to be consistent. By following the same study regime you'll position yourself a lot better to succeed as opposed to cramming a week before exams (SWOTVAC).

Why IB in particular and not something else in that area like Equities Research (I know GM's ART Grad Program in Singapore looks pretty sleek) or something more versatile like Management Consulting to fit in your other hobbies/ambitions?
Title: Re: [Ask Me Anything] #1: Orb

What is your favourite and least favourite thing about studying at Melbourne Uni? :)
Favourite: Convenience
This kind of stretches across a few points, but it's fairly convenient to get there since it's just a short tram ride away from CBD. Not only does uni have tons of great places to eat (who doesn't love food) but it's so close to the fabulous eateries around the city and down lygon street (so foodies you won't be missing out on anything!)

Least favourite: The transition
I found the transition from VCE to Uni was really, really rough. Didn't really know what was expected of you (although in all honesty if i took the initiative and listened in to some of those help sessions they ran I'd be a lot better prepared). Also the abundance in "free time" (i only say this because I thought it was free time, but probably should have spent it studying) was a bit unnerving, since I was at a loss of what to do with it.

What's your favourite/least favourite pokemon (game)?

Favourite/least favourite book?

What do you think of kitkats?
YAY pokemon!!! My favourite would really have to be Pokemon Ruby (ahhh the nostalgia), simply because it was the very first video game i've ever played. There's just something about the melody of Littleroot Town that brings all these memories flooding back ;(

As for books, there are too many faves, but i'll go with Artemis Fowl. There's just something uncanny about his level of intelligence, but it doesn't detract at all from the enjoyment factor that you got from it. Love you, Eoin Colfer :D

Kitkats are great! (hopefully I don't trigger many people ;) )
What is the meaning of life?
Spoiler
It's something higher than 41 but less than 43

I actually did a bit of research into this over the holidays (surprise surprise :O)

I guess I probably should do a bit more research into these other areas you've mentioned (don't know much about them, but they do sound intriguing!!).

Personally a quote from Elon Musk resonated pretty well with me. "If my team works 80 hours a week and your team works 40 hours a week, we'll get things done twice as fast". You have to factor in efficiency and other factors, but personally I feel that investment banking is a place where i'll be able to ignore external noise and channeling intense hours to see what i'm capable of (a challenge, maybe?). It's also quite tough to get into though, so fingers crossed!!

Fav NBA team?
How long have you been watching basketball?
Do you think the dream team is better than the 2016 US team with a healthy Curry (I mean like 2016 regular season Curry) and Lebron and other key players?*On paper
Did you see team Aus almost beat team US today? I have faith that this is a possibility now:D Mills lighting it up!!

Personally my favourite is Boston (Danny Ainge's manipulation of the nets ftw), but I also support Dallas because of Dirk (favourite player all time, such an amazing guy).
I've been watching for almost 10 years (or maybe 10+, started mid primary school)

It's tough comparing across generations, but personally I'm quite a massive fan of the 2016 US team (on paper). The way they shoot nowadays is so incredible and praiseworthy to watch. Go Aussies tho!! (did so well today) Yeah, I got up at 8am to watch it (priorities XD) I think we seriously have a real shot at getting a medal and I think we'll probably end up with Silver :D (we shocked France, they'll probably get knocked out by US because of placings and Spain's getting roughed up too much atm).

Hi Orb!  :)

Thank you so much for participating in this little initiative.  :D
Given that I am currently in Year 11, I just thought I'd ask you a VCE-related question:

Could you provide us with some insight as to what you would do differently if you had the opportunity to re-do your VCE?

I hope Commerce at Melbourne Uni is coming along well for you.  :)

I was sorely tempted to do a bit of language analysis and display what a loaded question that was, but you know, enough of VCE English ;D

Sorry but I value 2+ hours of travel time a day over that $8000 a year ;P (time is money guys).

I think Monash is a fantastic university and definitely worth consideration if you're a Year 12!!

Trigger warning:
Spoiler
Melb Uni is still superior, obviously

If you have a favourite movie, what is it and why?

Personally my favourite (my friends know i've raved about this for years) is Whiplash. I liked it so much I dedicated half a paragraph on my end of year Context essay on the English exam to it :D I felt it was a frustratingly accurate portrayal of desperation throughout the movie and, funnily enough, the movie was able to communicate the most harrowing set of emotions through the drum solos, rather than the conversations (it's something that you need to watch to experience).

Hi Orb!

Something that I would have done differently was adopt a more serious mentality during that Year 11 to 12 summer holidays. Often, a LOT of students throw those holidays out of the window (spent procrastinating or having a two-month long holiday). You get an absolutely fantastic 4 month holiday at the end of Year 12 (so there's plenty of time to celebrate afterwards). I know some students who spent 2-3 weeks mourning about their ATARs at the end of Year 12 (so why not spend those 2-3 weeks doing a little bit of headstart study during the summer holidays?). Everyone has different situations though (some have seriously burned themselves out through the rigours of Year 11) and it is really important to ensure that you do take an adequate break especially during those holidays.

Another thing was to take part in everything that makes Year 12 unique. Formal, valedictory, those final House competitions. Don't wag them to 'study' because they are the very last competitions or events that you will ever participate in. I know a lot of students (myself included) who took one or two events off to 'study', although we probably procrastinated 10x that amount of time in that month alone. These events are what makes incredibly fond memories, memories that you will probably remember for the rest of your life (as opposed to that fantastic 3 hours of news feed scrolling, which even the most die-hard fans wouldn't be able to recount significant details of).

Hope that helped!

why is 6 afraid of 7?
Damn. Never heard of that before ;P

I and my brother My brother and I (gotta have that grammar) have been watching and playing (2k  & NBA live <3 ;D) since '06. So we loved the "We Believe" Warriors (yep, we beat Dallas... ;)) and have been Fans since then. Of course I didn't know as much as I do now (so approx 10 years too :D)

Defs agree, it's impossible to accurately compare players who played in the 80s (them shorts though) and 90s to today, but on paper it would be such an amazing 7 game series (that's the only way it could be settled)

Boston is a great squad, Thomas has a lot of fight in him and you've got a great coach (who could've won 'Coach of the year' if it weren't for the 73-9 Warriors ( :'( :'()

What teams are you looking forward to watching in the 2016-17 season? I really want to watch the nets play (I love Jeremy Lin) and  no doubt I'll be watching Warriors games, hopefully they're not all blowouts, I like the close games where someone has to step up and be clutch :)

Yeah I love the current Celts, obviously looking forward to seeing the Celts (especially how Jaylen Brown turns out) but also how the Mavs fare with Dirk being the ancient clock he is. I want to watch the nets play (and lose) because of how we own their first round pick (robbed them of their future MWAHAHA). Yeah, i'm actually really evil when it comes to basketball discussion (Ainge is such a powerful manipulator I can't even, he robbed Dallas with that Rondo trade too, got Crowder, Wright and a first rounder).

Fun fact: Hamo94 was my username on Runescape that I made when I was 5 :P I was seriously considering something like Awesomekid or Iamcool (shameless pride and that childhood innocence), but eventually decided to name myself Hamo94 (i still have no idea why I called myself that, apart from the fact that I put 94 in to make myself look 3 years older than I actually were).

Thanks Heidiiiii :D
I think I arrived on AN reading some of those 'How I got a 50 in [insert subject name]' threads, and I mainly stuck around because of all these motivated high achievers that frequently stick around this forum. It's also quite a refreshing change from my high school, which had an elitist taste (which did have its benefits), quite different from the modest and welcoming community we have here.

AN has helped me become less confrontational (did too much debating in high school) and more easygoing over the years (i think this is a byproduct of the people you surround yourself with), so i'm pretty grateful for that :D

If you weren't studying your current course, what would be your second choice?

Orb, if you had your time again, would you change any of your VCE subjects? Why?

Personally, i'd drop Chem and pick up something like Economics.

I kept Chem throughout Year 12 because
1- Dad's really good at it and was essentially free tuition
2- Need it as a pre-req for Med
3- Already completed the 1/2 and got alright grades

In hindsight, given I put in virtually no work whatsoever towards the latter half of the year, I'd probably be better off studying something that I enjoyed a bit more. Every Chem class was a bit of a drain for me and concentration was severely lacking.

Hi! I think this is such a fun game :)

If you weren't studying your current course, what would be your second choice?

What would be your dream uni in the entire world? (If it was Convenient, paid for, you could get in easily etc..)

I'd probably pick up Arts. I completed an Arts subject as a breadth last sem and it was undoubtedly my favourite subject. I feel that the field of Arts really teaches you to 'think', whereas a lot of the other courses offered at Melbourne (Commerce, Science, Biomed) are more practical-based.

A dream choice would probably be Harvard (man that's so stock-standard). Other than that, Duke would definitely be high up my list (famous for basketball in addition to being an elite academic institution)!!
