Aaaaaaand with that, Ancient History is ancient history! What did you think of the exam? Difficult? Easy? Exactly what you expected? Leave your comments below!!!
If your school let you keep a copy of the exam, please PM me so we can post it up for everyone to see :)

when i saw the Augustus questions i wanted to cry a little bit hahaah
-
The Pompeii section was pretty good, it wasn't too challenging imo. Loved the question on the role of women!! And the last question straight out of the syllabus. awesome
They tried to throw in some doozies in the Sparta and Alexander section. I think they were manageable. Greek World 500-440BC question was fairly straight forward.
Although I think I messed up quite a bit in the last two sections with my sources. Didn't have enough evidence to back up my points and I couldn't remember who said what, couple this with an unexpected bout of stomach pains = rushed response.
My school assessment mark (or whatever you call it, I don't understand the raw/aligned/weighted mark thing) is around 93ish. I think I did enough in the exam to get at least 80/100. I'm also first in the internal rankings and most of my class left the exam after 1hr, or whatever the minimum requirement is. Hopefully I can still get at least a high band 5 :P

I thought was a really good paper! I know I got a multiple choice wrong haha but oh well, damn you source D >:(
But yeah the Julio-Claudian questions were good, part a for Agrippina was a little tricky but doable and part b was the same as always haha. Some of the shorter sparta questions were hard, but the long response one was perfect!
Yeah overall pretty happy with that one :) Congratulations everyone else for finishing Ancient! I'm sure you all did fab <3

Haha I'm not 100% sure if this is the one you're referring to, but there was one multiple choice about a fresco (or whatever it was) with a group of women, I think the correct answer was Dionysus :(

Yeah thats the one haha. I put Augustus cos I had no idea. That's what annoys me about ancient because a lot of the time if you haven't seen or studied that particular source before there no way to answer it. But oh well thats just one mark not much to be upset over :)
-
Does anybody remember any questions? Particularly from P/H? :)

i did the same :((( i thought it was the cult of Isis because of the women :((
-

I cant remember the exact wording but here were some of them:
1. Where would Source A (the little statue) be found? Pretty sure the answer was in a house.
2. What does Source B (Julia Felix's ad) show? And then there was a true and false thingy with 2 statements but I can't remember what they said. Pretty sure the answer was statement I is correct and statement II is false
3. What does Source C (the floorplan of the forum) demonstrate. I think the answer had something to do with the Temple of Apollo
4. What cult is represented in Source D? The options were the cult of Apollo, Augustus, Isis and Dionysus and pretty sure Dionysus (sadly for me haha) was the answer
5. What products in Pompeii and Herculaneum were produced by the natural resources discussed in Source E? Pretty sure the answer was wine, garum and perfume.
END OF MC
6. why were public buildings important?
7. Role of women in pompeii and herculaneum.
8. Contributions of new research and technology to our understanding of the past :)
Then the agrippina questions were:
a) describe her marriages
b) changing images
Julio-Claudians
a) Political role of the praetorian guard
b) expansion and consolidation of the Empire
Sparta
a) privledges of the two kings
b) Importance of the Hyakinthia
c) Main features of Spartan myths and legends
d) What does evidence reveal about the structure of Spartan society?
Hope this helped :)
i did the same :((( i thought it was the cult of Isis because of the women :((
Yeah most people I know didn't get that question, so I think it should be fine :)

For 1 and 2 I had the same answer
But I wrote wine, garum and oil for 5 :( crappp. didn't pay attention to the source!
For the Dionysus question, it was the first time I had ever seen that fresco in my life and I also associated the women with the cult of Isis

It may have been that! I am just basing it off my answers and HSC discussion page. I said it was perfume cos they mentioned flowers, garum cos of the seas and wine cos of the vines, but I know other people who put oil as well so don't be disheartened :)
-
for the agrippina question a about the marriages i didn't really have much to say about her second marriage cause like nothing happened?

Same. I basically just did one big paragraph for both Ahenobarbus and Crispinus together and just spoke about how they were rich and politically influential and gave her an insight into how to manipulate the system, mentioned nero being Ahenobarbus' son as well, and then another big paragraph on Claudius

Maths b6 bio, eng, multimedia b5/6 ancient history B2/3
Something tells me I suck at history

Sounds like a couple contentious multiple choice questions... but glad you all sound fairly happy with how you went!
-
Lol just think I got all of MC right... was really worried about the cult as I had no fucking clue.... I am expecting to get around 90 but I fucked up the 10 marker scientist one as I left 4 minutes for it... I could get 3-4 marks for it but thats it

Jakes I am coming second in the class with an average of 60-75% due to our teacher being a shit marker.. Am I fucked on missing a good rank?

Second in the class is a good rank. Forget about ranks/scaling/raw marks, because none of that matters anymore. Just do the best you can, in each of your exams, and you'll receive the best Atar possibe.

Dammit are you sure that was Dionysus? nooooo
And damn. The personality questions were TOUGH! I did Xerxes, and the 10 marker was on his relationships with Persians, and the 15 marker on his death?? Wth?
Anyway I'm so glad it's done!

if anyone's interested the ancient paper is up on the bostes website: http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc_exams/2016/exams/2016-hsc-ancient-history.pdf

That was quick...
I feel like we got the easiest paper this year, well maybe for my sections (pericles athens, hatshepsut and Egypt: To the death of Thut IV). What did you guys write for the women section and also slaves?

Yeah apparently it was the dionystic frieze or something? Like thats the name of the painting. So annoying that ancient exams always do that haha, theres always that one source that you'll never be able to get unless you've studied that one specifically before. But oh well, its just one mark that it sounds like most people lost haha, I'm sure you did absolutely fab in all your other sections. I heard that Xerxes was tough! I'm lucky I do Agrippina because the part b is almost always the exact same thing, but part a was a little bit specific for us. I'm sure you smashed it though, another exam to tick off the list!!

Do you mean the woman question for Pompeii? I spoke about how many woman in Pompeii were able to subvert the social hierarchy and expectations and obtain economic and social success, and then backed that up with the Julia Felix source and then mentioned Eumachia. Then I did the other one on occupations that women could have in Pompeii (bit of a stretch haha) as cult priestesses (mentioned source D), and i mentioned how the temple of Isis in particular accepted women, and then mentioned prostitution as another common occupation because it wasn't illegal.
Also, did anyone find that this paper was weirdly focused on Pompeii? There were so many questions only about Pompeii haha instead of Pompeii AND Herculaneum which they usually try and force students to focus on.

Hey with public buildings did you just describe the role of each in the forum? I did that and also mentioned bathes and tabernae?

I didn't go into explicit detail about everything (mainly cos I couldn't remember haha, plus there wasn't much space to write and I didn't want to do what I did in modern and write WAY to much for a 5 marker), so instead I spoke about the general roles of public buildings - so either law making, business or religion (theres probably more than that haha but thats all I could remember) - and then gave an example for all of them. So I mentioned and described the functions of the Basilica, the various temples (Apollo and Jupiter) and the macellum in the forum so I could keep linking the source :) But I'm sure linking to the baths and tabernae's would only strengthen your argument :)
-
I did much the same as sudodds in Pompeii and Herc I think! I found the multiple choice which asked you to refer to ONLY the source given weird, but I think I got it in the end! I agree that Xerxes was tricky.
-
Do you guys think if, in the women's role question, I just wrote about their economic abilities, roles as priestesses, ability to own and rent property and the freedwomen helping husbands run businesses from home I would be able to get close to full marks?
Also, did how many points did you write about for the last question? I did an paragraph on technology in general and linked it to philodemas project, bisel/laser and Fiorelli.

I assume for slaves you mean the Periclean Athens 5-marker? I wrote about the roles of privately owned (e.g cooking, maintinence, tutoring etc.) and state owned slaves (e.g manual labour, military fillers etc.). Hopefully that's enough!

Sounds good to me! For the 10 marker I did a paragraph on computer usage, a paragraph on imaging techniques and a paragraph on forensic analysis (I.e bisel/laser, sewerage analysis and the root work in the source they gave us! Idk what I'll get for it tho

I don't know exactly how many marks you'd get, but you've definately hit a lot of important points so I'd say there's definately a strong possibility!
With the last question, what I did was a paragraph of Fiorelli and how plaster was "new technology" which contributed to the expansion of knowledge at the time, however this also destroyed a lot of evidence as well which was a limitation. Then I linked that to digital reconstructions as a non-destructive way to study the past, and then spoke about other forms of technology such as x-rays and linked that to Estelle Lazer :) And that was pretty much all I can remember haha but I think that was most of what I wrote

I think our exams are looking very similar!

Definately in Pompeii and Herculaneum! Though I hope you didn't write about Sparta for Periclean Athens ;)

Whew! Thanks guys, I always tend to think I'm doing OK I'm the exam and then stress I should have done more afterwards but I think (hopefully) that I should be relatively OK now 😂😂
-
Okay I thought I'd just ask because I'm probably freaking out over nothing, but we only had to write our student number once for each section In sections II, III and IV right? Because after I filled in the info (question number etc) in the paper for each section, I realised I missed the student number space above the extended response In Pompeii and Herculanum, which I did filled in. Only occurred to me once I left the exam that we might have to write our student number more than once for other sections too. Probably over thinking it but for sections II-IV we only had to write it once correct? Thanks

Hey! Don't stress :) I'm assuming one of the supervisors came over and checked everything to sign you off, so if there had been a problem they would have spotted it!

Ok, thanks, you've reassured me :) I tend to over-analyse things all the time I just couldn't imagine losing so many marks if I had missed something!

No worries! And don't worry I know how you feel haha, I spent an hour worrying whether I wrote the centre number properly, simply because I wrote it justified left instead of justified right like my friend (that might not make any sense haha, what I'm trying to say is you know how they give you 4 boxes, my centre number is three letters long so I used boxes 1-3 whereas my friend used boxes 2-4. Yep that is literally what I was worried about hahahaha)
