I'd say slightly harder. Last Q was difficult (dropped 8 marks) and I found multi choice was slightly harder than usual.

Dropped about 4 on exam 2
I had high A+ For sac , 34/40 exam 1 and 78/80 exam 2 in 2015 and it was 43
As u go to good school, i think u can get 44~46 study score

I got D  ???
Title: Re: Suggested Answers and Discussion for Methods Exam 2

Wasted soo much time on 19 :(

Smallest value was at b=0, then because 0.2 is Pr(4), pr(-1) must be 0.8  (a+0.2=1)
this makes the mean 0.8 X -1 + 0.2 X 4 = 0
for highest value, a=0, so nothing will be by neg 1, then solve to find the value of b (not sure what is was) by saying all probablilities add to 1. Then solve to find the mean. I think I got 1 which gave me E

Didn't mind it  - only blind guess was Q19 of MC because I didn't have time to think about it enough.
Hoping for an A.

I got k = 5/4, not negative though.
Tough exam though, ended up not having enough time so I left 4 marks worth of stuff blank from the last question and guessed the last two multiple choice.
Pretty happy with it overall though.

6-10 dropped ex2

Dropping 7 could net you a 45 (with great SACs), but most likely 44, dropping 12 would be around 41-42

But the other questions were pretty stock standard
By the end, I realised i hadn't even touched my summary book for the whole exam... lol
The questions around statistical inferences were easier than expected

I really don't think so buddy. To get a 40, you'd need to have an exam as difficult as 2013 (and this wasn't as hard I don't think).
I'd say more like 38-39

I'd say 35-37

What do you think?
Sacs - A? Around 85/100. not sure about rank but I've been told I'm 'well in the top half' of my moderate cohort.
Exam 1- screwed it up :(. Around 26/40.
Exam 2- Feel more confident, 60/80?

Do you think I could get 35?

I really thought the exam was standard, if you get 118/120 with a low-mid A+ SAC you'd be looking at fringe 48 instead of 50 (so short answer, no probably not). Also mind examiners could potentially take off marks elsewhere in your paper (if you know you've dropped 2 marks already, dropping another 1-2 marks from careless/bad expression can easily plummet the S.S down to 46-47, it's very cutthroat at the top)
Only dropping 2 on the final exam is still something to be proud of though! A lot of talented students drop a bit more due to nerves :)

ended up with something like k was between 1 and 5/4 (inclusively)

For 4c, I accidently wrote two sets of solutions, e.g c = .., d = ... OR c = .., d = .... Will I get marks deducted?

yeah you'd lose a mark for that

Area = 2*Area of OXY
=2*1/2*sqrt(2)*|OX|

ended up with something like k was between 1 and 5/4 (inclusively)

I had the same, 1 < k ≤ 5/4.

Ohh thats how you do it! How'd you find the exam overall? The multiple choice was way easier than last years, only q19 was like so difficult haha

For the third last part of Q4. if you only said k ≤ 5/4 would you be deducted a mark? because k is given to be > 1 in the Question

I liked it. Dropped 2 marks that I know of so far, most likely q19 too. I spent like 6-8 min on q19. Hoping it's b :|

i guessed b too haha, after narrowing it down to a or b. its weird because i got 1< k < or = 5/4 but i dont remember squaring the area of the triangle .....

i did that too, as the sample size was 100 and therefore probabilty wasnt independent? not sure if im right, oh and 3d was to 3 decimal places. also for 4fi i got the same answer , except with a modulus ( in my CAS) , so i put the modulus in as the answer as well (in the brackets of loge), would i be penalised?

I reckon it's implying no replacement. Once you've inspected a computer, you won't be inspecting the same computer again, so he most likely will put it to one side.

So because the function in 3h. isn't actually a probability density function, there are two possible "medians": 176.45 (integrating from 0 to m) and 176.43 (integrating from m to 210).

How many examiners does it take to define a probability density function?

I reckon that since we don't know the sample proportion, the sample of 100 was irrelevant? The probability was taken from the large population. It's not about replacing or not replacing. I can't see why the prob would be different that if he were to take each computer one by one from the large population.

100*1/2=50>5

if n>30, normal
if n<30 binom

Regardless of these rules, I'm definite that this was independent using both logic and what i've heard VCAA will adhere to in the future.
small pop=ncr etc.

I'm almost confident 3f) is 1/8

Yeah actually since we don't know the sample proportion it's as good as selecting with replacement. Gotta change that back.

Was anyone else tripped out by the sample proportion of 0.06 in 3g? The probability of getting a sample proportion of less than 0.1 is less than 10^(-17), so they got pretty lucky.

In question 2, I didn't work out the normal properly, however the line was used to find different points of intersection and other information in sequential questions.

Would I be eligible for consequential marks? (The gradient of my normal was correct, I just mucked up the Y intercept)

Okay so for question 4a) I think it was, where you need to express the rational function in the form a+b/(x+2) I used long division and got the same answer as on the recommended? I haven't seen anyone else use that method and as such I was wondering if I will lose the mark for working? Thanx x I got maybe 50% so like every mark is golden and yeah I kinda need a 30 so someone reassure me that I at least got that mark  :)

I also went with 1/8 for the computer question, it didn't specify no replacement so I assumed no replacement. Lmao I made so many mistakes in that paper so that's probably one too though

edit: I'm also in the same boat as emily- I got the equation of the normal wrong (y-int), and as such got an incorrect value for C and that affected like all of the rest of question 2. Any chance at consequential as it's an exam 2?

I used that method as well! I think it's a very viable way of doing it, and my teacher had taught me to do those sorts of problems that way also :)

Okay that awesome  :) I'm also a spesh student and I almost caught myself using half angle formulas for f(x)=2f'(x)+pi, which could have been quite bad. But I couldn't think of any other way to simplify a rational function other than long division and I got really quite paranoid. Bless your entire heart for helping to put my mind to ease with that question at least xxx  ;D :D 8)

I did the same working in my suggested solutions. I thought this would be a more simpler way of tackling the question. You should be fine in that reasoning, as it didn't ask you to refer to the area of the triangle from previous questions.

Well the page isn't currently showing up, but I do think 1/8 is correct for 3f, having thought about it some more. I had that in the first place and changed it in response to a method that I hadn't thought of being suggested. It took me a while to realise that this argument assumed that exactly 50 of the 100 laptops lasted for less than three hours, but no such thing was said in the question.

Yes every year there are at least a few people who end up full marking 80/80. IIRC 2006/2007 (not 100% which years) the highest scores were 78/79 but there were only around 1600 students doing it then now it's 16000.

depends on the year, but VCAA don't release that enough anymore if i'm not mistaken. You don't need 80/80 for a 50 though. Pretty much any year but 2006 you could lose 1-2 marks (across both exams)and still get a 50.

For the exams these are just estimates since i didnt buy my statements. Exam 1 I think I full marked and Exam 2 I thought i dropped between 3-6 marks. Looking at my study score i would assume i dropped 3 marks overall.

Doesn't work that way. Exam 1 mark=/=exam 2 mark

Btw if anyone knows, is it normal for one examiner to give the mark for a 1 mark question and one to not? Should I inspect?

Got 72/80 or 144/160 on exam 2 for a 45. Weirdly lost a couple marks at weird places and got full marks for answers that don't quite match the suggestion solutions. a+ cutoff for ex2 was 65.5/80

Guess this year's exam was considerably harder than last years. That's 12 marks across both exams, last year that was like a 42 haha. The success rate is highly low from inspections, i doubt it'll work, but if it makes you feel any better then go for it :)
