Title: Is doing a degree in nursing or double degree in nursing/midwifery better?
Post by: cnm07 on December 15, 2016, 09:39:45 pm
So context to my question:
I have four options for courses and I don't know how I should order them on my VTAC account. I'm thinking about Nursing/Midwifery at Monash, Nursing/Midwifery at LaTrobe, Nursing at Monash or Nursing at LaTrobe. But if I do either of the double degrees, does that mean I have less time in my week to study and socialise and would it be harder doing a double degree compared to a single degree? Is it a disadvantage to do a double degree since I'd have to be learning content from two areas? I'm so conflicted between doing a double degree or single degree. Also which university (Monash and LaTrobe) in your opinion to you think is better for Nursing and/or Midwifery?

Hey!

Just a quick point to clarify, doing a double degree does NOT mean you do DOUBLE the work!!!!

If you do a single degree, the average student will take four subjects in a semester (so eight subjects in an entire year).

If you do a double degree, the average student will take four subjects in a semester (so eight subjects in an entire year).

Therefore, there's no different as far as time in the week to socialise and whatever else goes, so don't even consider that!!

As for learning things from two different areas... I don't think you'll struggle :) Even studying one degree, your subjects are often from different "areas" anyway if that makes sense. It is definitely not a disadvantage to do a double degree in that sense.

As for what's better... How long would it take you to travel to each university?

Well that's a relief, thank you!!! And it would be around 20 minute drive to LaTrobe and spprox. 1 hour to Monash. On public transport though they would both take more than an hour. If I do decide Monash I am considering renting some where close by or the on-campus accommodation

Do you actually want to be a midwife in the future?

After working as a nurse, you can do a diploma in midwifery and move into that area if you want, but I don't see why you'd do a professional entry degree if you didn't intend to use it.

If you are definitely considering midwifery, I did work experience in a maternity hospital, and the nurse midwives told me to DEFINITELY DO A DOUBLE DEGREE OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY instead of just midwifery as it opens so many more options for you as a nurse midwife!
Not sure if that's relevant to you but that's the two cents I got out of my Year 10 work experience placement!

Yes I "actually" want to become a midwife, I wouldn't even consider the double degree if I didn't want to become one. Thank you for your input.

I think Russ thought you wanted to be a 'normal' nurse, in which case midwifery wouldn't be worth it.

If you want to be a midwife, definitely do the double degree :)

If you have no intention of working as a midwife, i'm not sure you gain much from qualifying as one just to keep your options open.
I work with someone who is leaving to do her midwifery diploma, it's not uncommon.

Hey guys,

I've got a question at Deakin uni

Do you guys think it will be better if I take pathways to a double degree of nursing/midwifery? [and also how long are pathways and what options do I have?]

OR

Should I do nursing separately for 3 years and then do midwifery for 2 years? [can I do this btw?]
