Could someone please explain the difference between a gene and an allele? I'm really confused!!

A gene is a section of a chromosome containing the DNA that codes for a certain protein. An allele is a variation of gene. For example there may be a gene that codes for hair pigment and has two different alleles, one producing red hair and one producing black hair.
