In creatives, are flashbacks really needed or does it just ruin the excitement of the 'now' in the creatives?

You can use them if it suits! I used them in my Creative and they worked well, but it depends on the story you are trying to tell ;D

Of the mannnny creatives I've given feedback to on ATAR Notes, less than 25% use flashbacks. So no, not "really needed" but can definitely be a device you employ.

My teacher likes it due to the sophistication and how masterfully it can contribute to a piece if utilised well but I myself rarely use it and do fine.

Do you have any tips on how to approach flashbacks without becoming confusing the marker with the timelines in your story?

With timing, people tend to put three asterisks to denote a change in time.
My whole creative is a flashback in itself, so timing issues were never really a problem.

ah right. I wasn't aware we were allowed to do the asterisk thing? If we are though, I guess that makes things alot easier!
Thanks! (best of luck for your creative ^-^ )
