i read a very interesting linguistic study showing word diversity across australia. there are heaps of these and it all has very clear geographical boundaries. one crazy one i remember was how in alot of australia, parmigiana is called a "parmi" but in all of vic (and a few other places) its a "parma" except in geelong which also uses "parmi". another interesting one is: what do you call the taps you drink from at school? there were more but i forgot.

EDIT: heres a link to something similiar http://www.smh.com.au/national/australian-linguistics-roadshow-words-that-divide-the-nation-20151119-gl31n2.html

And just for context, this is a great example to use regarding language variation in Australian English. ;)

Nah, you definitely wouldn't be alone in New South Wales.

But you might have a tricky time in Victoria.

Can we appreciate the tiny proportion of people in that diagram that are conflating the prestigious hash brown with its beautiful, sliced, battered, deep fried counterpart?

Funny, we were talking about this in a Linguistics lecture a week or two ago.

Can we appreciate the tiny proportion of people in that diagram that are conflating the prestigious hash brown with its beautiful, sliced, battered, deep fried counterpart?
Interestingly, this is also a hash brown:

And this is a potato cake in the US:

Anywho, for what it's worth, I call it a potato cake. ;D

Potato Scallops: A dish that involves cheese, bacon and potatoes.

Potato Cakes: Those fried potato things you get at the fish and chip shop :P

(In my opinion anyways :P )
