Title: Can you cook?
Post by: Joseph41 on May 15, 2017, 06:40:09 pm
So I'll probably move out in the not-too-distant future, and I figure it might be nice to be able to, y'know, keep myself alive/healthy/functioning. :)

Do you cook much? If so, what do you cook? Do you have a favourite dish?

Please, if you have some easy recipes, let us know in this thread haha - there's no such thing as too many options when you come home from work late at night. ;D

Tuna mornay
http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/tuna-mornay-2/cce0a6bf-8547-4f50-8e0a-4f8fb65aa477
I make one similar to this, but I generally add corn and carrots into the mix.

Cheesy chicken nuggets
Chicken breast, shredded cheese (any sort, but I find tasty works best! ;D), breadcrumbs, thyme, butter.
Method:
- preheat oven to ~200 degrees C
- melt butter
- combine butter, cheese, breadcrumbs and thyme to make the breadcrumb mixture
- chop the chicken into nugget sized pieces and roll into breadcrumb mixture.
- Cook in oven for 20 mins/when golden brown
- Serve with chips and BBQ sauce.

Can testify that this is my 4yo sister's fave food- so do give this a try ;D

One egg chocolate cake

Pies (the meaty kind)
I'll give the generic pie recipe- but I usually use whatever is in the fridge and whip up some crazy good pie filling <3 https://www.lovefood.com/recipes/57403/steak-and-cheese-pie-recipe

I feel like everyone can cook, but some people have a divine ability to imagine flavours and understand the magic of heat circulation in an oven and all the rest. I mean, I can cook, because I can follow recipes. But I can't look at what's in my fridge and somehow make a cake from that.

Fried rice is literally my favourite thing to make because it's so delicious and so easy and will last a few meals if you make it in bulk.

When I make fried rice, I get into trouble for making a mess of the kitchen. 😂
I agree with fried rice being amazing ❤

One time... Term 2 holidays. Nocturnal watching Wimbledon, as usual for that time of year.

Mum buys loaf of bread.

I toast loaf of bread overnight, crust included.

At a loaf of Vegemite toast. That's where I'm at.

I think the burning (pun semi-intended) question is: what flavour were the noodles?

I live by myself and I can cook, but not that well haha.
I just make pastas cos I don't have an oven (if I did, I would be baking cakes all the time).

but yeah, I also make refrigerated desserts like truffles but I don't think that really counts as cooking

but yeah, the stuff I cook isn't complicated.
I miss food tech classes haha

^Strawberries, do you cook every night, or do you make big batches of stuff?

Voted 'passable'. I can cook basic stuff like pasta, noodles, toast (haha), schnitzel and stuff like that.. but anything half fancy, forget it. Definitely not MasterChef material.

I have to admit i've been a 'microwave meals' kinda guy in the past (convenience > quality/taste)... shameful I know.  :'(

Ahhh yes the struggle of moving out and cooking for yourself. It can be a bit of a struggle the first few weeks, but it's such a great feeling being able to cook a proper meal for yourself  ;D

A super easy meatballs recipe for anyone, but particularly those who might struggle cooking:

- heat a pot on the stove with a bit of oil (canola or olive, w/e) for a bit
- cut up an onion (maybe take a break because onions make me cry ahah) and a carrot, and put in the pot, cook for a few mins
- put in meatballs (I usually get that pack of 20 small meatballs from woolies, cheap and decent quality), stir and let them cook until they've started to change colour (they go a grey brown sorta colour)
- put in a tin of crushed tomatoes, some salt (I usually put normal salt and garlic salt), some herbs, and a little bit of tomato paste, and stir
- put the lid on the pot, let things cook for a bit then go and stir again, maybe add a tad more seasoning if you want
- replace the lid, and make sure you come back every now and then and stir
- after about 20-25, or maybe 30 mins it should be cooked - I usually get a meatball and cut it in half to check it's 100% cooked

And pair it with some spaghetti, potatoes, veggies or whatever you want! This recipe is super easy :)

every night, but I actually don't cook every night cos there's often like some sort of free food/event so I don't have to cook haha :P

I do cook every day because I need to feed myself lol, but very rarely is it proper cooking. I mean, ingredients out, maybe a store bought sauce, but otherwise all from scratch. I usually always use store bought pasta and passata, then just add onions and garlic or olives or something. Occasionally we make curry, which is as close to real-deal cooking as it gets here, with coconut milk, curry paste, chicken, veg, and rice. But it's really hard to come by a lot of ingredients in Italy. I'd reaaaalllly love an asian stir fry - it's easy to make, it's healthy, it tastes good, and there's a certain sense of "I made this" because it's not as simple as adding garlic to passata and pasta. In saying this, I love baking and frying big breakfasts (dry-up ingredients also difficult to come by here).

Can:

-Turn on a toaster without burning myself
-Can heat up milk to make hot cocoa
-can make chips without making an oil explosion
-can make a salad without chopping my finger off
-can make 2 minute noodles (almost every time I tip the boiling water on my self and get burnt, I'm still trying to improve!)

Thus, I am an exceptional chef

Does frying an egg count as cooking? I mean I can manage to fry an egg without burning it...

The hardest part about cooking is deciding what music to listen to D:

I think the best thing I can "cook" is probably a packet of Mi Goreng noodles! I'm honestly not the best cook and have burnt a couple of meals I've attempted to make, including somehow burning a fried egg, burning two whole batches of brownies right after another, and SOMEHOW microwaving foiled food (FOIL? WHYYYY HOWWW!!!)

I do whip up a mean salty fried rice if giving the time though, but lets just say, it's VERY salty.

I cook a lot because single-parent-who-works-full-time household (+ vegan so even when mum is home I usually end up making at least a component myself). In particular I like making curries and stir fry, healthy, relatively quick and tastes nice.  If you're struggling to find time/motivation to cook pre-preparing on the weekend can be great, so then when you go to cook you already have things clean and chopped up & it's easier to motivate yourself to not just have cereal or 2 min noodles. And remember that when you follow a recipe for the first time it is going to take significantly longer than every time you cook that recipe afterwards. Usually I just use recipes as a rough template and make decision based on 'feel' (however I will actually measure some things out for baking) which is a more interesting and faster way to cook (for me, anyway)

I love cooking. My menu ranges from Pasta dishes, to grilled steak and seafood.
