Hiya,
I'm trying to answer this question;
Distinguish between the terms allele and gene.
Is it correct for me to say "A gene codes for a particular characteristic however an allele determines the phenotype of the characteristic"?
I know that is not much detail.

Hey Niallovespie,
Yes it is correct to say that however I would distinguish in a bit more detail. Something like: "A gene for hair colour has several different alleles" - the gene in this case is obviously hair colour and the alleles brown, blonde, black, red etc.
Also in terms of DNA what is a gene vs an allele? Although distinguish isn't that high an order verb, it would be good to have maybe 2-3 points that distinguish genes and alleles.

No need to have 2-3 points for a question as simple as this. The number of marks should give you a guide as to the number of points you need to make.
Also, remember that hair colour is a polygenic trait!

Hmmm this is a good question and describing the difference between these two terms—which get thrown around a lot—is trickier than it ought to be. I don't think your answer lacks detail, it's just that the detail is wrong.
A gene is a site on the chromosome that codes for a particular protein, whereas alleles are variants of genes.

Genes are sections of DNA which code for particular traits, while alleles code for a specific characteristic. E.g. a gene could be eye colour and allele could be blue eyes.
