Title: Tattoos?
Post by: Joseph41 on July 29, 2017, 08:47:53 pm
Do you love them? Do you hate them?

Do you find them attractive? Would you ever get one?

I wanted to be a tattoo artist for a while. I was very into shows like "Miami Ink".

I don't want one now but wouldn't necessarily rule one out in the future.

How about y'all?

I have no issues with tattoos as a whole; they don't make me think better or worse of a person. However, whether I like them or not actually depends on -- as with all art --  the content.

My uncle was one of my biggest influences growing up, and he was a tattoo artist. His arms (from the wrist up) and his entire torso -- front, back, and sides -- are all covered in one giant tattoo he designed himself. So, I've always been around tattoos, and have always wanted one. Personally, I love the colourful, Japanese style of Kahlil Rintye.

In a perfect world, I'd love bright and colourful sleeves, but in reality, this is not something I am going to pursue due to the stigma around tattoos in the workforce. At most, I'd get something reasonably lowkey (e.g. the Ring-inscription wrapped around my leg because <3 ) that could be hidden if I wished.

I tend to be pro-tattoos just because my family is against them and imo their reasoning is straight up rubbish hahaha.

I don't normally like the look of tattoos, especially since it's typically not socially associated with the type of person I present myself as.  I wouldn't want one except perhaps tiny designs with words to encourage myself (but I don't plan to), but hell, if someone else wants to, go ahead!

I'd personally prefer to "decorate" with varied clothing that I can change as my tastes and self change, and that can match with whatever I want, rather than something permanent.

I dislike prominent tattoos which have no/little meaning (I typically think of large tattoos and sleeves etc being representative of that). However, a small tattoo that holds meaning I think is fine, as long as it's not a spur of the moment thing (even better if it's hidden, as a tattoo should be something personal). If a tattoo is to show off then I disapprove, if it's a reminder of something important then I think it's alright. Just my 2 cents :)

This is my favourite fact about you.

Definitely pro tattoo. Indecision is the limitation because like, I have a hard enough time deciding what to eat. The indecision is sort of magnified thinking about what should be on my skin forever.

Personally, I think tattoos are cool, but I wouldn't want one because the thought of having something permanently inked onto my skin sorta terrifies me.
Some tattoos have meaning to them, such as names of a partner*, date of birth of kids, or even a motivational quote. I admire people who do this, my uncle being one (he has all 3 examples I just mentioned, having all 3 done after my aunt passed on a few years ago).

*unless shit y'know happens and people aren't together anymore- in that situation I kinda imagine one of TV shows that remove the tatt/cover it up with something else.

(Just my ramblings on this topic :) )

People can do whatever they want with their body.

I'm really a live and let live person - the only thing I'm not really a fan of is face, head and neck tattoos (some of the small behind the ear ones are cool though).

There are so many tattoos that I like, but could never see myself getting. One of them being sleeves - have seen so many good sleeves that I love, but I'd never be able to get one myself. One of my friends got a tattoo with white ink, and it looks soooo good, but I'd never get one personally. Actually have a number of friends who have gotten tattoos since finishing high school, and I like them all :)

I reckon I'll get one in the future, but something small, and probably in a place easily hidden - like the side of my torso, on my ribs. Would potentially consider inner wrist for something small that I loved.

This is my favourite fact about you.

Definitely pro tattoo. Indecision is the limitation because like, I have a hard enough time deciding what to eat. The indecision is sort of magnified thinking about what should be on my skin forever.
Feels!
I want to get something meaningful, but something that also looks awesome and not clichéd.

Have toyed with the idea of something in remembrance of my grandmother, but not sure what I would get.

So.. quick response here.

In general, i'm not particularly a fan of tattoos. However, in saying that, I think there's something special about tattoos that are significant to the person (e.g. the name of a child or a loved one, or some art that is representative of something meaningful). Those types of tattoos I don't really have a problem with.

I also agree with Sconey + the link that has been provided w/ their post. There is definitely a downside and a pre-conceived idea/perception about them.

But you know... each to their own I guess. I'm sure those who get tattoos understand the potential consequences. :)

It doesn't count if it's one of those temporary ones  ;D

I don't mind if others have tattoos. Not a fan of face tattoos though.

Personally I'd like to get a couple of small tattoos, but I'm really scared of the pain (haha). Don't know exactly what I'd get, but I think I'd like to get something like inspirational words/quotes or something beautiful like roses or nature.

An ATAR Notes tattoo is actually a secret requirement of being a mod

It's like the dark mark - only that every time it lights up, it means BOSTES is up to no good instead of Voldemort.

What are your thoughts on this particular case, Sconey (and others)?

In a perfect world, the tattoos -- or lack thereof -- would have no effect on one's projection by themselves (that is, tattoo=bad, no tattoo=good). However, people would definitely need to take responsibility for the contents (nothing offensive, no hate imagery, etc).

However, we don't live in a perfect world, and everyone is very aware of this -- including the connotation that tattoos (esp. face tattoos) have. Trying to break the stigma is fantastic; it should be done. But like with everything else, slowly, because to do so too fast is irresponsible as it's an unfortunate fact of life that you'll suffer for it. It's highly unlikely that he would have completely forwent all logic, even if he was inebriated at the time.

So, in summary: The tattoo stigma sucks, but he should be self-aware and have some responsibility (with other things too, like the lack of CV and his criminal record -- needs to recognise they're factors too). Props to the people that gave him a job despite the face tattoo though.

Edit: Just realised how utterly pretentious I sound saying 'forwent' :P even if I may have used it wrong. Foregone...forwent...??? gosh, linguistics

So, Nick, when are you designing the official ATARNotes forehead tattoo that will form part of the induction process for life members of the AN cult?

The non-dedicated slackers can get it somewhere more hidden.

Woohoo bump. So @new users (and old, I suppose) -- what are your thoughts on tattoos? Any favourite styles? I encourage picture spam

The artist in me (so, about 110% of me) finds tattoos fascinating and also kind of hardcore. Just read through the old comments and honestly I would agree with the idea that, if you do get a tattoo, it's much more worthwhile for there to be a deeper meaning to it then just for fashion. Fashions come and go and to me 'trendy' tattoos are much less appealing.

Ignoring the longevity and practicality of tattoos entirely, I really love single-line/minimalist, ancient and watercolour tattoos. When they're done well, at least.
Mo Ganji is my favourite single-line tattooist (look him up, his stuff is fantastic) and I find watercolour tattoos depicting nature both fascinating and suuuuper satisfying.

I'm not sure if I'll ever get a tattoo. I've wanted a small one on my wrist for a long time though. I just don't like needles haha :)

Never was, and probably never will be a fan of tattoos. I don't even approve of body modifications of any sort (despite how cool some can be). I just don't like anything that's not natural on my body.

Though, I was raised more on the Chinese side than Australian, and over there, tattoos are considered taboo.
Sorry if I offended anyone  ;D

@Poet

I just looked them up, nice and minimalist! Digging some of the animal designs. Feel like you could easily design your own tattoo haha

@Zujinde

I mean, I disagree profusely, but I didn't ask for opinions only on the same side of mine, so really no need to apologize for sharing! :)

despite the memeynes, I actually love this

I reckon it's fairly likely that I'll get one or more tattoos at some point, but not for a few years at least. Especially given I don't know exactly what sort of career I'll end up with, and even though tattoos shouldn't affect that, I don't think I'd want to risk it (that's a bit subject-to-change though haha)

i love these tattoos by chen jie
They look like paintings it's so cool.

I'm thinking of getting a branch to cover some scars on my chest but my grandma said I can't get a tattoo until im 25 and I respect my grandma so if i still like the idea of that when I'm 25 I'm gonna do it. I really respect people who have tattoos and love them but sadly i think more often than not you see people getting tattoos they regret.

I absolutely LOVE tattoos, and find them pretty interesting.

I'm really not a fan of the big ones that cover a lot of your body (as in, I would never get something like that myself). I'm more into minimalistic, simpler tattoos, and quite recently I've found I really like watercolour tattoos. They look amazing! If/when I get a tattoo when I'm older, I'd get it somewhere sorta hidden, like my ankle, or on my lower neck, or somewhere else that people wouldn't be able to see. They'd have a deeper meaning to them. I've also really liked the idea of having matching tattoos with someone you're very close with - soulmate, sibling, idk you name it. I know I won't get tattoos until at least after uni, so for now I just enjoy looking at tattoo designs when I stumble over them.

The artist in me (so, about 110% of me) finds tattoos fascinating and also kind of hardcore.
Can relate to this a lot, I guess the main reason I like tattoos is because of my interest in other creative forms, such as drawing, painting and crafts. Can't wait to get back to that stuff these holidays. I remember a few years ago I designed a couple of tattoos for fun, to see how they'd turn out. And that just reminded me - I remember wearing fake tattoos as a kid and being very proud of them :D
