Title: Renewable energy-I'm a fan! Smiley's Environmental Science story
Post by: Smiley_ on September 03, 2017, 04:38:03 pm
Hi Everyone :)
I'm supposed to be writing a lit review on Ecological restoration but having trouble so I thought I'd have a break (If anyone has any lit review tips let me know plz)
I'm studying science with a major in Environmental science so I thought this would also be a good opportunity for others to see that studying science isn't just about human structure and function, physics or maths.
This my final semester which is a bit exciting but also kind of scary. I'm thinking about honours for next year but I'm still deciding :)

(I really need to get back to my lit review lel)

^I love this. Thanks for sharing, Smiley_!

What would you do Honours in? Would that be an extra year for you?

Probably in Geography, because unimelb doesn't do environmental science honours. I'm really interested in looking at Paleoclimates.
Yep it is another year on top of my degree :)

Even though it's really busy at uni. I'm really enjoying my final semester. I'm doing an internship at the moment which I'm loving and I managed to get a science job at uni so I'm trying to set myself up for life outside you however,
looking back on the talk I had today with a lecturer I think got an offer to do honours but I might have blown it off, oops. Better check on that.

Lit review has been handed in case anyway was wondering. So glad about that!
But now I procrastinating because I should be doing some peer reviews.....

Keep us updated, Smiley_! ;D

Really looking forward to hearing more about your degree. I was actually considering Environmental Science at Melbourne last year, also in Geography! Is there any particular area you're interested in working in after you graduate? :)

"internet high-five" for repping Geography. :D
I'm interested to see how this goes down considering I too like @Coffee considered doing this course and with the same major.

What areas in particular do you like about Geography? Is it just climates, as you referenced paleoclimates?

Geography and Environmental Science have been amazing!
Been on some amazing trips!
https://blogs.unimelb.edu.au/geographers-in-the-field/- Link if anyone is interested. I'd upload a picture but I can't remember how...

I like to do research but I'm still deciding on the type :)

I love learning about past climates, but I am thinking about honours in coastal geomorphology :)
The ecology/plant side is very interesting as well :)

I have another assignment that I don't want to do so here I am again XD

Had a chat to a couple of honours supervisors, just to see what it is like. Each person wanted me to do honours with them so now I can no idea what to do.
It is becoming very real that I am finished so soon and I'm so excited! but also a little nervous.

That is cool that all the honours supervisors want to work with you. Then again it could be because no one does honours :P
If I were you, I would look at what the supervisors work in and see which of them matches the project I want to do.
Eg: A lecturer specalises in Geology would match well something related to rock types.

That being said, I hope you do well for the rest of the semester :).

This has been something I've been interested in as well. Glad to see another person who's in the same boat!

Wow! So lucky. I would actually follow the advice above and add one more tidbit: learn about their lab members and other students e.g. Masters, PhD or other Honours candidates and see if you mesh well with them. That might help find your best fit and who you should do Honours with.

Thank you for that :)
I had a talk to the people that work around my supervisor and signed the forms today!

What type of area are you interested in? And do you have plans for next year?

What type of area are you interested in?
I'm a genetics major who likes the ecology, evolution and population genetics side of things.
And do you have plans for next year?
I did a research project as a part of my extended major, which I'm hoping to continue next year in Honours. My supervisor has said that he's happy to take me on again, as long as I get the marks for entry.

Yay! That is so exciting! I've decided to study an area different to the one I did project. Just wanted a change

Fair enough. As long as you're happy and dedicated, no one is to tell you otherwise! :)
