To future students =)
In order to select courses, universities will ask you to provide a TAX FILE NUMBER if you want to defer the payment to HECS (this is where you pay for uni once you earn above the income threshold).
What happens if you don't provide a TFN? You will need to pay full fees before the census date.
How do I apply for a tax file number?
1. Complete the online form.
2, Print the summary, which will include your application reference number, and take it to your Australia Post interview.
3. Attend an interview at a participating Australia Post outlet within 30 days of completing your online form. You'll need to take your printed summary and proof of identity documents to the interview. You will be required to sign the application at Australia Post upon completion of the interview.

Does a parent need to be present if you're over 16? Or can you do it by yourself?
I was thinking of doing it during a free period

Straight from the form's signature requirements
SIGNATURE REQUIREMENTS
If you are:
16 years old or older - you must sign your application. If you are unable to sign your application
So yes you can do it yourself.

Thanks EEEEEEP!!
Does anyone know what sort of questions they ask in the interview? I get nervous during interviews so I'd like to know the general sort of stuff they might ask before I apply and go in...

Also worth noting that if after you've applied for your TFN, you need it for whatever reason and can't find it - there's a few ways you can find it: SOURCE
Sign up for a myGov account (and link your account with the Australian Tax Office) - note you'll need a few forms of ID and possibly some letters sent to you previously
Looking for an income tax notice of assessment (if you've earned income) or your employer's payment summary given to you at the end of each year
or calling 13 28 61 during business hours. (you'll probably need some ID and answer some questions about your identity)

I got my TFN a couple weeks ago, and tbh it's not much of an interview. The Auspost lady just took my documents and told me to wait a few minutes until they got you to sign a card. The only questions they asked were about the details on the application form to confirm that they are actually correct. So there's really no need to prepare for the interview except for bringing your documents. :)

If you lost your TFN, you can call the ATO =)
They will recover it for you, after you give them some details :D

From the ATO website:
If you can't find your TFN and do not suspect misuse, phone us on 13 28 61 between 8.00am and 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 10.00am to 4.00pm Saturday. You can also phone Sunday between 10.00am to 4.00pm from 1 July to 31 October.
If you have a myGov account linked to the ATO, you can access your TFN online.
