Hey guys!
I thought it would be cool to make a thread for us to say what we are wanting to do next year, whether that be a uni degree, tafe, work, gap year etc! If you are wanting to have a gap year, say what you wanna do the following year :)
This way we can see if any of the AN Community are wanting to go to the same uni/even the same course, because it would be nice to have a friend right from the beginning ;D
I shall start with that I want to go to UTS and do a Bachelor of Communications (Journalism)/Bachelor of Laws, however I am extremely highly doubtful that I will get even near the ATAR required, so I will most likely be going to Macquarie Uni to do a Bachelor of Media (Journalism and Non-Fiction writing)/Bachelor of Laws
Comment below where you wanna be next year, or even past HSC students, comment where you are now cause who wouldn’t love to see a friendly face around campus or the work place or any other post-school environment ;)

aw this is a lovely idea!!
i would love to study international studies and media (pr/advertising) at unsw :-) at this rate, i'm not going to get the atar, so i'll probably do the media component first, which has a lower cut-off, then pick up international studies in second year.

This is a nice idea! :)
So I'm looking at either a bachelor of music/bachelor of education at UNSW (1st preference) or USyd. My other option is a Bachelor of Arts (history)/Bachelor of Education at UNSW, USyd or Macquarie.
Hopefully we all have some friends from AN at university! :D

Yay.. joining the teachers club! Love it :)

aww this is such a nice thread!
well i'm planning to do a bachelor in arts screen: production at the australian film television radio school. though if i don't get in, i'll do a diploma in screen and media at the academy of film, television and theatre (seeing that i already got accepted) and then reapply for aftrs. if things don't work out, my third plan is to do a bachelor in screen and sound at unsw.
i know film isn't really a popular choice at uni, but it'll be nice to meet some people from the AN community during uni!

You see, that's the great thing about uni. You are grouped with people of similar interests (duh.. same degree. You don't do a degree for no reason). While it might not be popular, at least you won't be alone.
... and of course, things are taken much more seriously :) It's a great environment to be in until you've been there a while then it starts to get painful (I was at uni for 5 years in total and by the end of it wanted to run). I am now happily working full time :)

Was looking at Sports Media at Canberra but will probably start broad in Journalism and possibly International Studies (French) to open up my options a bit. Looking for as much work experience as possible (one of the guys I went to primary school's dad is the CEO of Fox Sports :D so definitely go to abuse that and also want to go for an internship at the Western Weekender since they have the best relationship with the Panthers players - even though the commute is around 2 hours it would be worth it haha). Also really want to do an exchange as part of my journalism program in Switzerland - looks like a magical place :)

Ahhhh we are so so so alike!!!
The course down there looked incredible but my family, friends and boyfriend all live in Sydney and I don’t want to move at the expense of my own happiness as dumb as it may seem to throw away that opportunity. Also I’m gonna presume you’re a Penrith supporter then? I’m a Manly supporter and sorry to say but after finals week 1, Penrith aren’t exactly a team I like... >:( ;)
Lol who am I kidding I absolutely hate everyone except Manly <3 <3 <3
-
Awesome thread!

I'm aiming to get into USyd for its Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Nutrition and Metabolism, as it is a pathway into their Masters of Nutrition :) 5 years of uni... :'( the other options for an accredited degree are UoN and UWollongong, which are pretty far away :P

haha yeah same too much money to spend. a pity though because a year of the course was all work experience! but in the end i thought starting off broad is best and then just seeing where it takes me because it's very hard to crack into the sport journalism field :) haha yeah for like 8 years now, got some good driving hours going down to penrith to watch the games, aim to go 10 per season. ahah you might like to give the article i wrote for the roar a read on that game between manly and penrith and then shane flanagan's little outburst haha: http://www.theroar.com.au/2017/09/12/time-shane-flanagan-trent-barrett-grow/

Ahh I see! So gonna presume you live a fair hike from Penrith? I’m lucky I live super close to Brookvale Oval so I can get to every home game + having a family of fanatics we go to Melbourne, Gold Coast, Auckland, Brisbane etc etc etc although we only managed a couple of those this year due to HSC! :(
Nicely written article BTW, although not sure if I can say the same about the title or what your argument was...sorry, gotta protect ma T-Baz ;D

Yeah on a good day it's around 80 minutes to get down there. Once though, we got stuck in traffic and it took us 2 hours just to get to Parramattta, so we hopped on a train, which was another 1 hour and 30 minutes to Penrith and sat in the rain for 80 minutes as Penrith scored 2 points... haha. But you are well and truly dedicated that is insane going all over to watch. I do Live Blogs for the games for a website called League Unlimited so it's at least a fun way to experience the games when I'm not at Penrith. And yeah thought you might not like the article ;)

Last year I was about to work with League Unlimited but cancelled last minute because I was so busy with school! But love the people on that website!

Ahh yeah it is the best, I don't even care that it is unpaid because it looks really good to do this sort of stuff for free and it is also so fun too. The main guy Tim is an absolute cracker, have the best chats on FB haha! A dogs fan too so have to feel for him. We're always looking for more people don't worry about that, have had some weeks where we've struggled to fill all games but you might be too busy anyway ;)

This is such a great idea paigek3! Do you mind if we VCE students also create one like this?

I was actually considering moving this to National Ed given the relevance to all students... but if you want to create one just for Vics.. go for it.
I don't know about the segregation though.. :( Perhaps i'll let one of the admins decide whether a merge is necessary? :) Create it for now and if its necessary to merge we will do so later

Hey guys!
This is an idea from paigek3 who had created a thread for the the HSC students in terms of what their plans were for 2018. I thought it was a great idea so I've create one for us VCE students as well.
Mod Edit: Merged NSW with VIC, let's get excited about next year together! ;D
So next year, hopefully if I am able to have a 'great exam season' (AN Podcast reference) I would like to be do a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations): Medical Imaging at RMIT University.
Comment below where you wanna be next year, or even past VCE students, comment where you are now cause who wouldn’t love to see a friendly face around campus or the work place or any other post-school environment ;)

Awesome thread idea! Have loved reading the NSW one :)
Keen to see what people are wanting to do next year and into the future!
P.S. love the podcast reference ;)

I'm looking at either Law/Econs at USyd or Law/Comm at Monash atm. Hopefully I'll be able to get in :)
-
Eeeaarrgghhjkll, I don't know.
I'm a bit aimless in life, so I've got two choices:
>Undertake a Bachelor of Science, branch out, hope I'll figure out a career path on the way
>Take a gap year where I can just work part/full-time, not worry about school, and try to figure out what I want from life
I'm currently leaning towards the latter, albeit just by a smidge.
-
I"m thinking engineering or computer science (maybe combined) at any uni in australia. I think my parents would be chill with me dorming anywhere, but I'd rather stay in the same state because ceebs moving my shit further (lol). My school doesn't give atar estimates though (yeah we're a bogan school) but I put my marks in the atar calculator that my friends told me about and got 69.73 :p which is just about the cut-of for my first few preferences so...we'd have to see, it rlly depends on what my atar is.....might want to go to the gym more, get into competitive volleyball again, go clubbing with mates etc as next year's plans xD
-
I've gone ahead and merged the NSW and VIC discussions - I think we can all share our excitement for things to come as a joint community ;D thanks heaps to paigek3 and lyoko for starting the discussion(s)! ;D
PS - I'm working full time next year and I'm not sure how to feel :o

I took a gap year, was really a great idea :)
had lots of fun and not worried about school (but sometimes I hated work and wished I was back in school)
but now that I'm in uni I wish I could've taken another 5 gap years haha
-

Of course not! Go ahead :)

Are you excited?!

Getting slightly off topic, but this is why I didn't take a gap year, and why I won't defer for a year during my degree - I don't think I'd ever go back to uni if I did!
I sometimes wish I did take a gap year, though, because I think it would have helped not only my bank account but also my mental health, and I think having a bit of extra maturity in uni can never go astray.
Like, realistically, why do we pressure ourselves into jumping into tertiary education so quickly? Why don't we take some time to discover a bit more about ourselves, rather than just placing value in how quickly we can do something that may help us get a job?
Uni has changed my perspective so much lol. I used to be that sort of person who was like "nah arts/science/generalist degrees aren't useful why not do something that gives you a really tangible outcome at the end jobs-wise etc etc" but my mind has really been opened this year haha.
I’m hoping to get into Commerce and Science at UNSW next year, or maybe Com and advanced science
What are the merits of advanced science as opposed to normal science? Is it really different, or more just different in name? :)
-
Currently I'm tossing up between 2 courses to be my 1st preference, right now I have it set as
1. Bachelor of Arts and advanced studies (with my heart set on majoring in geography and theatre/performance) at USyd
I really want to do this course but it's so far away though
2. Bachelor of planning, pathway to master in urban planning and Managment at WSU
Seems interesting, is walking distance away and lands me with secure job oppotipunities but I didn't find the Uni environment as inspiring and there are no avenues to explore performance
I think I'm gonna leave these as my preferences, especially since long travel times didn't put me off highschool (45 - 60+ mins away by bus) but at the same time the closeness of WSU is tempting
-
Really excited about next year :D
I hope to get into Biomedicine, (otherwise science is my second option) @ UniMelb. ATAR for biomedicine is relatively higher than science, and thanks to SEAS, the ATAR requirement went slightly lower than it was. Travelling will be a pain, but it shouldn't be as bad... (it takes me 50 mins one way - it's still nothing compared to what people claim to say).
EDIT: I forgot to mention, I'll start looking for work as soon as I arrive back from my holidays next year (I am still unsure what sort of job I should be looking for)

yeah personally I felt that I wasn't "ready" for uni yet. And I'm so glad I took that gap year.
If I went straight from high school to uni I would be thrown into the deep end and not know how to cope
and yeah, towards the end of last year I was like "omg I just so don't want to go to uni anymore cos I cbf"
-
Agreed. I love the idea of this thread ;D
Next year I'm hoping to do an Arts degree at Melbourne. For me, it seems the ideal course option. I've had so many people criticise this decision, but I honestly couldn't be happier picking this. It opens up exchange opportunities in Germany, the chance for me to study Philosophy, and extend my interest in Literature.
Outside of Uni, I'd like to find a new part time job. That's also an exciting prospect 8)

Did someone say Literature? And Philosophy? ;D
Nothing makes me happier than hearing such a positive attitude towards Arts.

:) It's really great reading all these entries - hopefully we all get our first preferences! Woo! Hyped for 2018!
-
I was hoping for advice please.
So I want to study Medicine. I've applied for UNSW, UON, WSU, Monash, Adelaide.
My Umat means I can still get in, but ATAR...That's debatable. So most Sydney folk have the backup of Medical Science at UNSW and then try for Post Grad. I live down south, (Illawarra (near Wollongong)), so people from here tend to do Pre Med at UOW. Both are three year courses, but not of super interest to me. 91 and 95 ATAR cut offs respectively. (I should get just above 98 (hopefully)). I did find a course I liked... Fast tracked too, which means I'd finish quickly and be able to start postgrad Med (or at least try for it) sooner. It's Paramedics at UTas, Rozelle Campus, Sydney. The ATAR cut off is 75. Is there a problem with doing a course 23 ish below what I'll get?
Any other suggestions GREATLY appreciated.
-
The ATAR cut off is 75. Is there a problem with doing a course 23 ish below what I'll get?
Absolutely not. Do what you want to do. The cut off just means its not in as high demand as a course with a higher cut off. There's no such thing as 'wasting' your ATAR either.
-
Okay. Thank you.
For anyone who has done Post Grad Med, how significant is the advantage of doing a Science Undergrad degree?
