So, I don't have a TFN (never needed one), and need one to enroll by the 25th (or I lose my CSP place).
Anybody else in the same boat (probably not?).
I read that it takes upto 28 days for the application to go through, but I can get a Certificate of Application from an ATO shopfront which I hand on to the "provider", and later quote my TFN when I recieve it.
However, I can't enroll online without a TFN. How am I meant to enroll when it's a compulsory field zzz?
-
The tax office over-exaggerate how long it will take to process. It's usually 1-2 weeks MAX. Do your parents have an accountant? I think your accountant would be able to get you one within 2-3 days.
-
You have to enrol in person in the meantime...

your best bet is to go down and visit the uni administration and try to sort it out (student support is the best place), they should help you sort it out...
-
Do you need your TFN to defer your payment with the tax office?
-
weird, i don't think i needed my tax file number straight away when i enrolled - had to have it by the end of march or something, otherwise i would have had to pay my fees up front (i already had a TFN though, so it wasn't an issue for me).
-
Yeah, you will need the TFN by the census date (31st March)
[you don't need to confirm how you will pay until this date, too]
-
Thanks for the responses so far.
Ummmm, lol. I went and got a TFN Application form and filled it out, and should hopefully go to an ATO interview toady or tommorow.
But, with the UoM application,

Do I have to complete that e-CAF bit to enrol (as in, by the 25th of Jan!)? Because I can't do it without my TFN.
Edit: Oh shit I am retarded, I don't need to provide the TFN until that 31st of March date. Thanks Excalibur and humphdogg:
WARNING: Your enrolment will be cancelled if you do not either pay up-front or give your TFN or a certificate from the Tax Office on or before the census date.
-
When you go to get your TFN ask the person for proof that you have applied. This way you can show it to the uni when you're enrolling just to say it's on the way.
-
it says e-CAF is compulsory if u want your CSP, so... =\
go down to Student support and see what you can find....
-
OMG I dont have one either !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and btw how do you enrol online? (silly question I know but i can't seem to find it on the acu website)

I dont know my student ID number :-[ :( :'(

Ok reg, I was in the same position as you last year. I'm not sure if this topic has moved to a new conversation, but what you should do now is apply for your TFN. On enrolment day you will be able to say that you don't have your TFN but you will supply it to them before the census date (they will even have a slip that they will give you that has a link on it where you can enter your TFN later on). If you fail to meet that condition, you must pay your CSP upfront.
That is all :). You will get your TFN before March 31st if you apply now.

An interview with the ATO? ???
Just for any1 still in skool (obviously not reg or odette), once u get bak frm holidays get ur TFN thru ur skool like I did. U fill out a single A4 page, the skool stamps it and stuff 2 say u're legit and off it goes. I got my TFN within the week - no interview, no hassles.

i'd say do it online, it's heaps easier! (thats coz our school got the entire year level to do it all at once, it took 3 months!)
-
arghhh.. when ATO says its approx 28 days its usually around there. For me it was and I was very frustrated, I don't think it can be that fast (1-2weeks) especially this period of the year. Lazy ATO workers. When you go remember to bring lots of ID and they will give you a slip to say what day you applied for a TFN, its procedure.

I called the ATO this morning cos my online application wasn't working, and you can only apply online if you are like, international or whatever (not Australian citizen).
i booked a meeting at the ato shopfront for tommorow :(. plz gief tfn quick (or certificate of proof lol)
Just a quick question:
I submitted my eCAF with "Full up-front payment" (because it said if I don't have a TFN I can change it later),
should I continue to submit the administrative enrollment or wait (not sure for what?)?
-
i think the certificate of proof is the slip they give you that has your application number and date when you apply for the TFN.

do a trip down to student support and ask
i dnt want to give advice that might lead to a catastrophic mistake, i dnt think anyone else want to either :P
UoM isnt that far from ATO, u might as well come in and ask :P

I've got a TFN but lost the number... My bad :-[

What you can do is look at letters you got from centerlink, some of them have it.
Or tax return papers?
Otherwise you can get it by filling out the same for as you would if you haven't got one, and they will send it to you.
Here is a link to the form. It has instructions on it. :)

the easiest way is to call the ATO, they'll ask u a few confidential qs to confirm ur identity, and then they'll quote ur number :D

If you call them, be prepared to sit on the phone for a while.
Maybe make yourself a coffee and grab a bite to eat :P

I just called to book an interview for tomorrow, and they picked up before the "You have entered the queue" message was finished. They close at 4:30 though, better be quick :P.

shit i need a TFN -.-

Nah they won't be able to tell you it via the phone anymore due to "privacy laws" you have to make an appointment on the phone or drop by then show some photo id then they will ask you some other questions like previous address etc.. then they will give it to you.
-
phew i had the same problem...thx for clarifying that we still have time to get a TFN.
-
omg update
I went to student support, and they said to choose the "Pay 80% up-front" option, and then just give them my TFN whenever I get it. Hah, useless enrollment system :(.
-
Hmm I got into contact with someone at the ACU student centre and they said not to worry, just send them the TFN when I get it :P hehe, it wont take as long to process apparently... but who knows =) GO ACU !! :D :D
