I was wondering because of how cheesy this sounds but I "forgot" to try for the entry to Year 9 if I would be able to enter at Year 10? I do realise the chances are like finding a needle in a haystack; 28 from around ~350. Overall,I am very friendly and an eager student that enjoys learning. I am currently studying for the academic tests of the entry. Does anyone know what I could do that would improve my chances of getting in at Year 10? Or how much of the academic tests affects your acceptance In Year 10? I just want to know what I should do to improve my chances. More sports? More studying? More leadership? Thank you :)
-
I think you to sign up for year 10 entry via Melbourne High's website next year or so (?)
And yes, your grades on your test for MHS has a significant impact on getting into the school.
For year 10, they do get quite picky but it's good that you both play violin (I do to!) and you're very good at table tennis; this can increase your odds. But first you need to get good grades in the exam before proceeding (from what I've read) to an interview.
Best of luck! :D

I do realise the chances are like finding a needle in a haystack; 28 from around ~350. I am pretty good in table tennis, I also played badminton before and liked it. Hockey is pretty fun to me as it consists of running, I am improving on it. I was okay at running. I suck at swimming. I also learnt martials arts until I stopped in Year 6, got in to the fourth sash. I am also currently learning violin, have learnt for 5 years, but not doing grades; an estimated level would be Grade 5-7. Overall,I am very friendly and an eager student that enjoys learning. I am going to trying put for MHS next year... You sound like the perfect student, but don’t forget MHS is a selective school, so they do select the kids who do well academically. Hope to hear more from you!!! Also use the forum that marks essays for you, trust me, it will help a lot with your preparation for the exam...
Good luck

I've got another question, does your NAPLAN results go towards this? If so that'd be great because my NAPLAN results in Year 7 was pretty good.

Reading, Spelling and Grammar & Punctuation in Band 9 , Writing in Band 7 :/ and Numeracy in triangle. Sorry for my anxiousness, I just really want this place at MHS. I still can't believe I didn't even apply this year.. uh... "The Academic Ability Assessment Test is conducted on behalf of the School by Edutest. Unlike Year 9 entry, the academic assessment is not used as the main determinant of offers." an extract from the Year 10 Enrolment page on the MHS website.
I applied for year 10 entry in Mac rob. From my experience, they did not ask for my naplan results. Suppose they evaluate your acdemic performance in the entrance exam? However, MHS might differ from Mac rob despite both are selective schools.

Hey guys, just to give an update, I’m now a SRC and am applying for community service, and I have been invited to an accelerated maths program for next year, do you think I should still get a specialised maths book for the selective school exam? I’m thinking of doing the holiday program from Henderson’s tutoring for numerical & verbal reasoning; maths; creative & persuasive writing; and comprehension, for Christina’s I’m also going to get the exam packs from spectrum tutoring, which include writing tips...
Hugo
Please PM for any things you think would be useful!!!

I also take part in debating, an am planning to do it again next year!!

Nice guys! I'm mostly studying maths ATM for JMSS! Congrats on getting SRC captain I also recently got elected as middle years language captain! Extra Curricular can help alot especially if you aren't the most academically smartest trying out! For me I've done tennis comp, state chess, athletics in the past, piano and obviously a few academic awards too! In regards for tutoring, most tutor places a way beyond the test but can help with speed and advice. I'm personally considering doing it 2 months before my exam to get quicker and to prepare but self-studying should be sufficient right now. Good luck guys, I know a few people who have gotten into Melb high in year 10 who said it was a tough but rewarding experience!

Hi I was just wondering what year you are in?
Also, are any of you friends on ATAR notes, and if so could you please PM me their details?
Thanks so much, like I mentioned beforehand I’m going to be taking courses on each topic from Henderson’s. I’m also going to buy the exam pack from spectrum tutoring.
I got a lot of awards from school, last year, and all my reports look good for this year and last year, the only thing is I didn’t get many awards this year, will that be a problem?

I'm in Year 8 right now! I forgot to take the Year 9 entrance exam this year but instead I'm trying out for John Monash as science interests me a lot more! I don't think any of my friends who have joined ATAR notes but I might contact them to see if they can help you out for MHS

I was just wondering if anybody could give me a bit on info, on the writing portion of the exam. I read on the edu-test website that it could be creative, descriptive, narrative, persuasive, expository or information piece. So I’m slightly confused, could anyone please give me some info on this?

Hey there,
I entered MHS in 2015 through Year 10 entry (graduated this year) so I may be able to help you a bit!
In terms of the application process, they will ask for your past two school reports which is probably your term 1(?) year 9 report and your term 4 year 8 report (I think it was like that for me). They will also ask that you record all of your co-curricular and extracurricular activities and awards along with copies of them for validation purposes.
The most important part of this process though is definitely the application/interest letter. I firmly believe that this is what the assessors (both of which I know as they were my teachers) will value the most. As long as your report is decent (that is, above average) and your entrance exam result decent (at least 1 superior) then it is likely you will make it into the interview process. For my year, about 60 from 300ish made it into the interview process, 30 of which were accepted into the school.
In terms of the interview itself, I remember it lasting for 1-2 hours? The majority of that time is spent as a group of around 6ish. You will talk about real-world issues, how they can be addressed, then split into two groups and undertake problem solving puzzles to test your teamwork and communication skills. The last 10 minutes is spent in a private interview with both teachers, where they will personally question you about your goals and really make you reflect on yourself. Remember to smile, crack jokes (not too many) when you can. MHS teachers love humour.
Personally I entered with a major focus on Sport (with a bit of music and decent academic records), specifically athletics. I didn't really have any records with leadership as I was in general an introvert/quiet kid during middle school. (but it does help)
As for tips..
-Keep up that table tennis, if you have any awards from school, throw them in!
-same with badminton
-Probably should try to do an exam for Violin. A certificate will really help. MHS music talent really cycles from good to dry, and with this cohort leaving I gotta say we've entered the dry period again. Good music records will help you in your application. If you are really grade 7 ish Violin, you'll be good enough for Camerata which is really appealing especially as a new student.
-For your application letter, put as much emotion as you can into it. Make it personal. Don't sound like a robot. e.g. I wrote a story about how I went from a hopeless kid who could barely run 200m without dying to a state athlete. Pretty cheesy.
-don't worry about swimming haha i still can't swim :^)
-Really push yourself in the interview. Show them that you care and are able to think in an open-minded manner. Show them that you can reflect upon yourself.
That's all that I can think of so far. If you have any additional questions, feel free to PM me and I'll try my best to answer them!
Good luck

I am sitting the mhs entrance exam for entry in year 10 and I was wondering if its still possible to get into the school if I don't match the selection criteria. For example one of the things they look for is people that are involved in sports, performing arts, music, etc at a state level. I play a cricket, but not at a state level. They also look for leadership and I applied for leadership at my current school, but I unfortunately didn't get the role. However I have applied to be a volunteer at a festival within the community. The final criterion is a record of significant academic achievement, in year 8 I was 18 months ahead in Number and Algebra, but I'm not sure if that's high enough. They also look at reports and apart from maths most of my subjects are satisfactory. I'm worried that even if i do well on the exam I might not get in due to not being able to demonstrate a high level of achievement against each criterion. If you guys could help me out and give some advice that would be greatly appreciated.

No, the NAPLAN do not count towards your entry. I've thanfully recieved an offer this year (2018) for the year 10 2019, how'd you go?

Hey!
Only put in roles that you have already had in the past. For your leadership, it's great applied for leadership at your school, but I would not mention it since you did not end up participating in it. You can display leadership in many avenues - were you captain when you played your cricket? Were you a team leader for a big school project you did? If so, definitely discuss them in your application.
Put in cricket as a sporting activity, but they only really give you marks if you've played at a high representative level (e.g. played for Western Spirit) or as you've mentioned state level.
Put in as much as you can, be concise and make sure you have all the supporting documents as proof to your activities. Have a good crack and good luck!

Hey! It's quality>quantity. One really good extra-curricular activity you've had in the past for EACH criteria is more than suffice. So you have a good one for music (drums) - have you participated in big events? Are you a lead drummer? Try and show off to them as much as possible. Same for leadership - what have you exactly done as a leader? How have you contributed to the community as a leader?
Hope that helps !!

How many superiors do I need to get a interview?

How many superiors do I need to get a interview?
Depends on the quality of your application letter.
Someone I know successfully applied last year. He had one superior but an amazing application letter.

Oh, thanks for the information.

Hi,
I am writing for JMSS and MHS. I go to James AN for JMSS and maths and numerical are covered there. I do lots of tests for reading comprehension and verbal. Last year I scored 2 superiors 1 above and 2 highs. Hopefully, I do better this year.
