Title: New Melbourne Train Stations Named
Post by: Joseph41 on November 30, 2017, 04:53:59 pm
Quote from: The Age
The station under City Square will be called Town Hall station
The underground station next to the Shrine will be Anzac station
The station near Melbourne University will be Parkville
The station at Arden will be named North Melbourne
The existing North Melbourne will be renamed West Melbourne

There's something I don't like about "Anzac Station". I can't really articulate my thoughts, though. Does this sort of feel weird to anybody else?

I also liked "Arden", but what they've done probably makes more sense.

That's going to play with a few people's brains lol. North Melbourne that isn't actually in North Melbourne renamed to West Melbourne where we're building a new station in North Melbourne which will now be known as that instead of the previous one.

Confused yet? Yep.

The other ones sound really.... obvious.. and boring. Then again.. so are the other station names.. so.

Thank fuck they're actually going with Parkville. Like, not sure if anyone remembers, but they wanted to call it University station - and I feel that's just stupid given Glenferrie and Caulfield being right next door to Swinburne and Monash. Calling Parkville "the" university station is just... Weird given those circumstances, but I reckon it would just feed into egos of people who do the whole "Melbourne is the best uni in Australia" (lol tho didn't ANU overtake them this year?), which is even more annoying. :\

I liked University Station. It has a nicer ring to it than Parkville Station, which sounds more rural and provincial imo

I'm glad the Parkville one is called Parkville, not University station (I mean not only would it service UniMelb, but it'd service people who need the medical services around where the station is)

I consistently travel through the current North Melbourne to get into the city, so it'll be weird to hear it get called West Melbourne. :)

But is that just because you're not used to it? Because there's lots of places inner city I'd say the same about, eg Glenferrie.

UniMelb pushed really hard to have it called University station so mildly pleased that it was Parkville. Either one would have been fine, but I partially agree it would have been a bit of a snub to those other train stations near likewise important universities.

The others are fairly boring. ANZAC does sound like something John Howard would come up with, but still probably has a role. I think people of our generation might struggle with it a bit because we don't have the same appreciation of the importance of the ANZAC's legacy, with the wars that have happened in ours and our parents' times being largely stupid.

^To me, it's almost the other way. Like, it feels almost disrespectful. But as per OP, I'm struggling with why I think that, and can't really articulate it very well.
