Title: What's the correct phrasing of 'paper-scissors-rock'?
Post by: Calebark on February 06, 2018, 03:27:48 pm
The question of the century...

As always, this is a very sensitive topic, so please keep debate respectful at all times.

It is paper-scissors-rock.

Paper and scissors are two syllables so you go down-up down-up. They let you set the timing so that you are in sync with your opponent. Then you end with the one syllable ‘rock’ and a downwards motion, revealing your hand.

Paper and scissors are nicely timed, then rock is rushed out, how can u say paper or scissors fast? You definitely can’t say it fast without messing up your timing.

If you say rock-paper-scissors it is hard to get your timing at the start with a one syllable word, and you end up with your hands at slightly positions, which naturally results in cheating accusations.

Paper-scissors-rock is clearly the superior option.

Edit: Also I’ve never heard anyone say any of the others.

I have a slight preference for SPR over PSR.

Rock paper scissors

Starting with the monosyllabic word allows for a forceful and strong beginning which readily captures attention and encourages the other person to focus on the contest at hand. Additionally, since "rock" and "paper" are not usually paired together and do not share many semantic or lexical fields, it is clear that the formulaic chant of a rock paper scissors contest is underway. By contrast, paper and scissors are often paired together in a wide variety of contests which, if "paper scissors rock" is used, can lead to confusion about whether a game is underway or a simple list is being spoken for another purpose entirely. This confusion inevitably disadvantages the person who did not issue the game challenge thereby contributing to the effect where a more confident person has greater chance of success regardless of their ability. Is this really a divide that we want to continue entrenching within society? If so, feel free to use that phrasing. But those of us who would rather reduce the divides in our society and form a more level playing field will always choose "rock paper scissors". It is that simple.

I'm not an Eng Lang student, so my rebuttal may not be as eloquent, but I'll do my best

You are however a science student, so you should understand that the way that you phrased the question biases results in favour of YOUR wanted outcome - not good practice

This is me too: RPS and PSR are the only legitimate way to do it.
However I accidentally voted RPS, whereas the best way to do it is PSR, since you have the one syllable word to finish, and on the word "rock" you make your hand shape. This is the true way of the game

Am I the only person that has heard of this? Can’t be.
I’ve met many people that use hammer paper scissors and it really just baffles me.

Don't you guys mean rock scissors paper?

Don't think I've ever heard anyone use the term paper scissors rock it's counter intuitive.

Weird, i grew up always saying "scissors-paper-rock". I'd sometimes hear people refer to it as "rock paper scissors" but during a game we always did SPR cause of the syllables, like how people explained above but for PSR...

There is only one way to do it.
Rock-paper-scissors

Just the very way it roles of the tongue, is enough to prove it to be the superior way to say the phrase.

And as a killer, google calls it 'Rock Paper Scissors!

RPS sounds to me like nails slowly scratching down a chalkboard.
