I don't think there is a consensus on this... people have written about irrational exuberance in stock markets think dot com boom or Great Depression... maybe shifts in supply curve as per oil crisis of 1980s... everytime there's a recession it's because something else has gone wrong...

Btw so link above if you check out Keynes be sure to keep in mind stagflation of 1980s as we found ourselves in a inflation unemployment whirlwind where short run policies may have negative effects in long run  ;)
