Title: Screenshots of the new forum design inside!
Post by: Joseph41 on August 03, 2018, 01:39:21 pm
Hey all! As you may be aware, the ATAR Notes Forums will be changing. Naturally, all changes will be for the better. ;) The basic idea is to make the forums are a lot more intuitive and easy to navigate. At the moment, the site looks a little dated!

The launch is, honestly, still a fair while off. But we really want to share with you what we have at the moment. I've had a play around with it and it feels so, so much nicer than currently - but we'd love to hear your feedback off the screenshots below! Note that a lot of the text is rubbish, images aren't correct etc. Just ignore this for now.

But yeah, because we're doing this for the users, we obviously want feedback from, well, us! Haha. Very much a work in progress, but what do you think so far? :)

This is very nice. Much better than current, so far.

Does this mean you're sticking with SMF?

Think it's looking likely!

Ohh fancy ;D

-Love the index, it looks really clean compared to how it is currently.
-Love the look of that search bar and how prominent it is, hopefully it works haha

A few questions:
- There’s 3 different shades of blue on the forum index and the thread is orange- Is the colour scheme round here going to be changing?
- Is the banner at the top with the logo and notes/articles/videos/ etc staying? (Perhaps updating to K8’s new logo?) Or is there going to be a different way to get to those pages?
-The quote in that thread doesn’t appear to have a hyperlink to link it back the post, is there still a way to get back to that post from the quote?
-Is the ‘alert’ thing at the bottom of the thread what’s appearing in ‘watching’ under user controls or is it something else?

Edit: Also is chat going to be a thing again?

Edit2: Also I love the user control section on the side.

1. Yep, probably! What do you think of those colours?
2. Absolutely. As below:

3. Yep, good shout. Will get this implemented. I think those boxes on the quote are meant to be quotation marks, too.
4. Honestly couldn't tell you with absolute certainty on this one. I think the buttons might need a bit of fine-tuning.
Edit 1: Hope so! But better than the IRC. Something that doesn't feel as though it was built in 1839 haha.

I just want to say, though: nothing here is final. This is the whole reason we want feedback. If enough of us want something, it'll likely be implemented. If a lot of us hate something in the screenshots above, it'll likely be axed. So let us know! ;D

In regards to the quick reply screenshot in the opening post, it would be nice to keep the Preview button. I don't know if it's just me, but I like to proof-read my posts before I hit send, especially if they include any different fonts, colours and such.

I think this will take some time to get used to but I really like it!!  ;D
With the inside a sub forum picture theres two different notify buttons, is there a difference between those?

Yep, for sure. Good shout. I used that heaps, too. It'll come back.

I'm guessing one will be deleted. :)

Has AN considered having a casual chat box?
Maybe something that requires x amount of posts to use?

Looks great and so much more intuitive!

Is there going to be a quick reply button located somewhere on a post or is the orange reply button at the top right corner of the thread the one that's for doing quick replies?

Expanding on this, will IRC still exist? I noticed there's both a 'chat' and 'messages' icon in the screenshot. IRC is kind of obsolete now (although it has much nostalgic value), so could we potentially replace the IRC with this chat box?

Also, the colour scheme is varying the blue; it's lighter for the sub-forums - I like the current uniform blue. Why not experiment with a cool palette, saving the yellow and brighter colours for notifications and the like? (Just personal opinion)

On top of this, an odd reward for getting different post amounts?
idk...

And double poet's thought. I think uniform blue is sweet!

4. Honestly couldn't tell you with absolute certainty on this one. I think the buttons might need a bit of fine-tuning.
1. I think I would prefer less shades. Like one colour for most things and then one colour for things to stand out (like how the favourite threads are a lighter blue) rather than different shades of blue for every different thing. I think I like the orange on the threads, it's makes it seem way brighter although it'll take a bit to get used to.

4. I was thinking it might be like a mix between unread posts and the notify button. Like the watching tab just shows unread replies to posts that you've clicked alert on.

What is the "Watching" thingy for? same as Notify?

On other forums, "Watching" is sort of like a "Favourites" option, where you can "watch" a thread and then have easy access to it subsequently.

Could you elaborate on this a little? Like a thing that pops up on the forum? Sort of like an always-on Facebook chat?

Quick reply will be at the end of each thread - see the last screenshot in the first post. :)

IRC won't exist in its current format. Hoping for something much nicer!

Uniform blue sounds like the preference overall. Thanks for feedback!

kind of reminds me of the medstudentonline format but more colourful. Why stick with blue, btw? Is it because blue is associated with learning?

I definitely associate blue with ATAR Notes! Think it's a natural fit.
