Title: Australia's own mathematical genius
Post by: QuantumJG on October 20, 2009, 09:02:35 pm
I was walking into the maths building of my university where I saw a copy of paradox written by MUMS (Melbourne University Mathematics and Statistics Society). I opened it to hear about our own mathematical genius Terry Tao.

- At the age of 8 he got a 760 for the mathematical section of the SAT (maximum score is 800)

- At the age of 13 he was a gold medalist for the IMO (International Mathematics Olympiad)

- At the age of 20 he got a PhD in mathematics at Princeton university

- At the age of 24 he became a full professor

- At the age of 31 he was a fields medalist (the Nobel prize for matheticians)

Minds who are equivalent to this who come to mind are:

Child genius Gauss (who made my life easier with Gaussian shells for electric field problems), Newton, Maxwell, Einstein, Hawking, etc.

Tao's been my god for a long time.

Tao's awesome.

I wouldn't put Einstein in the same category. His skills (excluding his creativity) matured once he hit his early 20s. To tell the truth, his performance as a teenager wasn't brilliant. There's no denying that he was a genius - but his talents only really developed once he was a bit older.

I went to his lecture not so long ago but I found his public speaking skills lacking :P

Tao's great... he doesn't exhude an atmosphere of 'genius', but underneath it all he's a god at maths.

Ramanujan was a similarly talented, but he was self-taught. Although he died at age 32 he independently derived 3900 results. In 1976 his 'lost' notebooks were discovered and to this day mathematicians are still poring through the pages, trying to comprehend the genius of his work.

OMG. My life has been shattered.

I thought Kamil9876= Terry Tao. I googled the image, and 6th one was Kamils DP. It looked realistic!

Gauss (who made my life easier with Gaussian shells for electric field problems)

Don't forget modular arithmetic :P made my life easier solving number theory problems.

Damn I thought that was him too!

As for Einstein (who apparently had asperges syndrome) I know that his genius did not come out until his 20's but the thought process he had with these theories is truely remarkable.

I know his thought processes were remarkable. Einstein's one of my favourite individuals of all time. I think there's a difference between being a mature thinker and a child prodigy, that's all.

But relativity's beautiful :)

Woooo Terry Tao. I knew all those facts about him though. He does have a rather awesome blog:
http://terrytao.wordpress.com/
(Though half the posts go over my head...)
Also check out this sweet video of one of his lectures on prime numbers:

I knew it wasn't Terry Tao either. I thought it was actually Kamil aswell, because if you look at his posts he does sound exceptionally good at maths and I thought he had a photo of himself infront of the blackboard.

In that case, can I put a picture of like Jennifer Hawkins as my display picture and say that's me?  :P

Jennifer Hawkins is a lot more famous/celebrity amongst the populace though! Ask most people and they never would have heard of Terence. Whereas ms Universe is televised to I think ti was 1 billion people around the world.

Haha, I at least have Quantams understanding on this. :P

Oh c'mon.  I was just kidding.  Please don't take me seriously when I've got this smilie after a sentence: :P .

EDIT:  Except for the smilie in this post.

Hey! No, no, SORRY! To be honest I wasn't sure if you were kidding! And I HATE that smiley, whenever I use it, it isn't like the MSN one CTRl+P. If only it SMILED a little, one would tell it is a joke.

Misunderstanding. :). It's because MANY people on this site start arguments from simple posts like I just posted before, so I was trying to quash any debate. But yeah, looks like you're not one of them :)

Nah, its not that, just the sheer stupidity some people possess.

Not including you ofcourse

Watching it now, its pretty good.. I needed to use some downloads.. Even though this stuff is x12831723127387128638 over my head, its still a good video.

Edit: Nvm, its not hard to understand -.-

But wow >.< I've never been this 'wow' about maths, yeahk go bag me for being a nublet etc >.>
