Title: writing task
Post by: Pencil on November 03, 2007, 04:26:49 pm
EDIT: If any people doing french want to join in, just write up your response to the questions! haha we need more people

ok so..

You have lived in the city all your life. Your parents have just announced that they have decided the whole family will soon move to the country. Write in your diary, reacting to the news, telling of your feelings and giving reasons for your reactions.

It's a question from one of the Leading Edge prac exams. fire away haha.
I'll probably write mine later tonight while I put off doing all my other hw..

Ok feel free to pick out all my mistakes! Also I kind of took on the persona of being a really prissy brat haha. And I wasn't sure whether I can refer to my diary as like a person, and whether I'm supposed to end it like a letter with 'bisous' or something??

Cher Journal,            11 Juin, 2007

thanks for the corrections!
you're probably better at correcting than my teacher (not that she's not awesome) but she's half blind and always misses everything haha.

edit: is it ok to cut off the 'ne' in informal letter/journals? And is it ok that I've referred to the journal as a person haha?

Post by: melanie.dee on November 03, 2007, 07:14:01 pm
at least your teacher actually speaks french though haha, i couldve missed things too simply because i dont know they're wrong haha.. but you didnt make any massive mistakes anyway, most of the things i put were just things i thought would work better but seeing as thats just my opinion who knows lol.

but seriously you write really well, your obviously good at english too, which help.. lots of people write in really simple language etc without the kind of flair that you have, so i seriously think you'll go really well with the essay in the exam. your better at thinking up ideas than i am ha, i go for the informative persuasive writing tasks cos i struggle to think up inventive situations and reasons haha when im trying to write essays

wow i should stop crapping on and go write my own haha

edit; im not actually sure whether its ok to take the 'ne' off. im guessing it should be, because thats the style of writing your doing and it shows your aware of casual slang ish writing, but im always scared they'll just think im an idiot that doesnt know how to speak french properly haha. check with teacher i guess, i should too.

as for addressing the diary like a person ahhaa. i think so? thats what id do

Cher journal,

Too good.  I read it like three times, and could only find one missing accent, which you've already corrected  :(  I can find nothing else!  Haha I don't think I'm capable of correcting your work, I think you need Talitha or someone if she returns..

And you put in everything, as in a 'dont' a 'dans lequel' a subjunctive, all the tenses..

umm.. haha my feedback sucks hey. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. But I'm sure it would get full marks
Title: writing task
Post by: melanie.dee on November 03, 2007, 09:28:41 pm
ha yeh i read over it again and picked up some missing accents hahah. unfortunately i always miss some on exams sacs etc and i dont have enough time to keep reading through it to pick them up! and yeh i always get so excited when i have an oppurtunity to put dont or something in, sometimes i have trouble finding a place to put it in lol. yours uses just as much complicated structure and subjunctives too tho. its seriously really good

i reckon yours would get full marks or at leeast 14/15, for the sophisticated way you write and the complicated vocab, despite the few minors mistakes. we're not expected to be perfect.

we really should check whether you need to put the 'ne'. how much would that suck if they thought you didnt no what you were doing and took off like 5 marks ha. although i suppose thats pretty unlikely, but its possible that you're not supposed to do it.

anywhere where is talitha? come correct my work please ha

haha you are lucky if all you miss is accents! The examiners probably won't even realise.
My teacher told my to deliberately put stuff like 'dont' in, is that what everyone does?

Why does noone ever write on the french forums?!

and nah i miss more than accents obviously lol, just accents a LOT lol i actually have no idea with accents haha

Il faut mieux dire <sans avoir consider?> -also using the conditional <pourraient> in the previous line sounds better.
Overall, that's really good -good use of pronouns, subjunctive and generally good authentic French. My written French has steadily declined since last year, so do get one or more better opinions. And sorry about the Franglais, lol I often do that when hovering between English and French.

merci! with the 'dont' line, does it sound compeltely ridiculous like that? cos i was trying to find an oppurtunity to put in dont haha.. although i get it doesnt really suit it anyway.. its more 'a way in which i can make..' au lieu de 'a way to make..' ok it sounds very poncy in english hahahha and probably in french too. ill have to find another oppurtunity to dont :(

i thought about se comporter, but i sort of assumed that se conduire and se comporter were interchangeable.. is se conduire more formal?

how did you not get a 50 in french! eek now im scared

Mmm it is "s'est pass?"

Remember how little the writing task is worth; I've no idea how scoring works, but whether you get 13 or 15/15 is of little importance compared to how you do at the compr qs.

And yeah, I was a bit disappointed, as I said on BOS, I was rather shaken up by losing one of the 1st few marks on offer which might have been responsible for me losing a couple more, also some of the written comp qs were really ambiguous -have either of you done the exam I was "treated" to? The qs about Saint-Exuperry in particular left me feeling uncertain.

eek I just checked and you're right the listening and reading/responding counts for 60 marks! I thought it was more evenly weighted than that.. that scares me. Although the reading/responding isn't usually too bad, except when you get ambiguous ones.

I haven't done that exam yet, although I have a few prac exams coming up in the next few weeks and I assume the 2006 will be one of them. We actually learn about antoine de saint-exupery as part of our detailled study.

You got 46 raw right? Did you ever get a statement of marks?
Title: writing task
Post by: bubble sunglasses on November 05, 2007, 10:22:30 pm
Nah, didn't get any SOMs. I got 100% for SACs, imagine I lost about 3 marks each on the listening and written comprehension qs. I agree it's stupid that your ability to write in French counts for so little.

So what was your detailed study about? aviation or literature? lol
Title: writing task
Post by: Pencil on November 05, 2007, 10:30:29 pm
Literature, or more specifically 'l'enfant dans la litt?rature fran?aise' which was odd compared to everyone else I talked to, who all seemed to be doing WW2 or something more serious. We read le petit prince and some poems, and watched 'la gloire de mon pere', and my sub-topic was the critisisms that they make on modern society. And basically I just had to talk about lame things like the differences between the world of adults and the world of children haha

Nice! We did WW2, saw Au Revoir les Enfants, which is a great film, but I wanted to do something about food, fashion, cathedrals or something a bit more esoteric, on my own, but ended up going with the flow.

I know this is the French forum, but I'm doing Italian (and Japanese but I don't know my SAC scores aside from them all being A+s) and I lost 1.5 marks for SACs and in the practice exams I've been doing I've been losing about the same as you for listening/reading comp. So, do you know if LOTEs are similar across the board in terms of study scores? I think I went fine on my oral exam too.

well check the scaling report, I think italian might be one of those ones that doesn't scale well because alot of native speakers do it.
Even in terms of raw scores it might differ because of this, whereas french has less native speakers..

..then again i could be totally wrong haha

Italian scales about 7, so it's not French's 12 but it's not too bad compared to languages like Arabic, or Indo...hmm I guess I'll just have to be great on the day...thanks :) (p.s I'll upload those lit things as soon as I get access to a scanner =))

as in 'a thing'? Yes.
And I learnt 'putain' after I hosted a french exchange student for a month, and she used to say it all the time, and then one day I went to look it up and she was like 'no no don't look it up!' haha very funny

haha well it's how it was when I orignally posted it, because i seen you suggested to write 'vous vous occupez aux' so I changed it to that, then I looked at it again and thought 'no I was write the first time' so changed it back, then saw you edited your post too to 'vous occuper aux' haha. but now its unchanged :)

quick grammar question. To say something like 'you only have to look around you to see...' I keep going to write 'on n'a que regarder autour de..' without thinking which can't be right can it? So would it be 'on ne doit que regarder autour...' (also would it be 'autour de soi'? I'm not sure what to use with 'on')
edit: or can I still say 'autour de nous' even though  I've used 'on'?

um im tempted to say "il ne faut que regarder autour de soi" ou meme "nous" there i think.. depending

most natural thing that comes to my mind, but then again when you dont speak it fluently, some things that sound natural to you are compeltely wrong and picked up somewhere bizarre ahha

but "on ne doit que regarder autour de soi" would work too i think

duno bout the first one though.

and yeh i get confused with on too, but in this case id say 'soi' because you're using it as a one/you kind of thing. i get confused when i used it as "we'.. and then with notre son/sa etc all that

eta; oh and i keep meaning to correct your thing and get to writing my own, but i reeeallly need to study, so ill either do it after methods tomoro, or after chem on thursday. im shit lol

Just a few corrections... Though beware I may be wrong:

hmmm I would've thought pr?ts unless you're sure the brochures only aimed at females

"  Ptet 'tis "De" or ptet m?me mieux "de votre/vos..." you know.. to personalise it =P

"Quoique" DOES NOT = Whatever... it means Although
"Quoi que" ... note the space... = whatever

You've used "quand" alot... gets abit repetitive... mix it up with "lorsque" not sure about the "irez" but I don't think "serez" fits...
"when you're overseas, you'll be staying with..."
"when you go overseas, you'll stay with..." You could probably use either.

Overall quite good with an impressive use of the future, subjunctive and present tenses and nice incorporation of "ce dont"

 :)

hah yay someone else corrected it, now i wont waste time im meant to be using to study for chem

another thing

i think should be

because it's like saying pourquoi pas prendre.. and in addition.. pourquoi pas gouter. its not a command

also.

i think "C'est une occasion a ne pas rater" mixes it up a bit and sounds better than "que vous ne pouvez pas rater"

-------

my net is so slow at the moment i've given up on trying to download anything (a 2min you tube vid takes about 20min...ca ne vaut pas la peine) so anyway, i don't have any suggestions for downloads!
but other good french movies that are in video ezy/possibly on the internet are....
- priceless / hors de prix (pretty funny and very easy to understand)
- my best friend/ mon meilleur ami (drags in bits but overall trop bien!)
- la sciences des reves/ the science of sleep (personally i really liked it but its the kind of thing a lot of people would hate. a bit arty farty...like eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. BUT this is in french/english/spanish so might not be what you want. but mostly french!

first ones right

second ones right too

stand up for oneself can be se defendre or stand up for something defendre son point de vue you could maybe use that, or defendre ses croyances but i dont know if that works. theres probably a better specific type phrase but i dont know it. you have use se battre pour.. ses croyances, ses droits etc also i think

4th one i have no idea

and yeh 200-300 words really is pretty short oh well i really should do some practice essays

i think to strive for would be s'efforcer but only for a verb....so if you want to say "she strives for excellence" you could say like "elle s'efforce d'obtenir la reussite"?  ew that doesn't sound very good translated literally though.

on another note, what do your teachers tell you about writing "cher journal" to start diary entries? because mine says il faut absolument l'ecrire - but other teachers are adament that you should never use it.

on another note, what do your teachers tell you about writing "cher journal" to start diary entries? because mine says il faut absolument l'ecrire - but other teachers are adament that you should never use it.

I use 'cher journal', what else would you use? Why do some teachers think it's bad?

well like i said, teachers seem to be pretty divided but all have pretty strong opinions!
the ones who say you shouldn't, suggest you start with something that you would actually write in a diary, like "la vie est pourrie. pierre m'a quitte, je peux toujours pas le croire!"

...but my teacher says that it doesn't satisfy the "structure" criteria for a diary. meh. i'm so over vce french, i just want it to be french-french and not have to worry about ce qui plairait aux examinateurs...
