Title: should you discount Y-linked inheritance?
Post by: qshyrn on October 25, 2009, 12:50:29 pm
i read somewhere that Y chromosome doesnt contain any genes which really determine the phenotype (apart from male sex).. so when asked a question about a pedigree, should you only explain why it can/ cant be X-linked AND NOT anything about Y-linkage??? or should u mention and explain that it cant be Y-linkage?

There's not many, but there are some Y-linked conditions, meaning you'll have to explain it.

If all males shown in a pedigree is affected and all males pass on the the trait to all of their offspring, then this would be Y-linked.

i shoulda done more research before asking this question :idiot2:..  there are y linked disorders like male infertility.
o well hope this reminds people not to discount the y-linkage
EDIT: this wasnt a good example another example is hairy ears! (eww)

I think all you need to know is y linked=from father to sons only

How can a Y-Linked condition be infertility lol?
The guy can't have a kid with the condition though :P?
i read it off wiki and i think it may mean something like low sperm count(just guessing), but he could have a kid through reproductive technologies..
another  example is hairy ears lol :o

Y-Linked is really easy though, just think:

He has to give his Y to ALL his sons. (So basically we're talking every male being affected).
And all their sons.

Havn't seen it before in an exam though.

Yeah I haven't seen it either. But your right, and they'd have to give you at least 3 generations of pedigree to make sure, so it wouldn't be that hard to pick
