yeah, the short answer seemed easier than the previous years, though the MC was just as hard (for me).
by the way, did anybody else have trouble solving 1200=......some t-equation....? i kept getting t=-3ish =S, ended up having to draw a graph to find intersection

Multiple choice seemed annoyingly lengthy as many people have already said.
I'm just glad that's over rofl.

If you used the 'v=' equation and antidiffed, added the +c part and then solved for 1200 all in one input line you woulda gotten a positive solution as well

how did you do the MC question about the linearly dependant vectors?
I guessed C.

MC was ridiculously long. Analysis was ok, but there were some tricky questions (like finding the area in the complex numbers question...fkkk me I found many of the questions were non-standard too.

So glad Specialist is over though!!!

OMG...
so obvious now... ><

I didn't get that because i added u+v together so it was like
(m+1) i etc etc
and w had just i
so i was like 1+1 =2
not =1
but arghhhhh

all you needed to do was put in a domain after the equation... 0< t <360 was big enough for it to give you t=240 something seconds
Title: Re: Exam 2 - How was it?
Post by: krzysiek on November 02, 2009, 06:15:59 pm
Yes, 1296 is correct. Confirmed with others, we can't all be wrong.

Furthermore, I did not study for spec this year (almost at all, minus the work I did during the year) and I found this to be much easier than other past exams by VCAA. MUCH easier. It was not hard at all in comparison to the others, I honestly, for a person who is not that great at spec ( ie - if i studied, have potential for maybe 36-37 raw) thought it was easy - and i think those who studied well are not going to reap the benefits.

I don't think it is going to scale as well as last year either - unless we all here just think it was easy, but the rest of the crowd thinks it was hard?

God damn that linear dependance one seems so easy now, that's what happens when you rush the MC

short answer was a gift of a section, however the Multiple choice was MUCH harder than the short answer. Overall an easy exam compared to other years however it was longer so believe it evens out. This was a test of how well you can use your calculator, nothing more. Obviously you have to know ur stuff but im sure you get what i mean.

guyz... to keep your sanity in check, i suggest that you stay away from the solutions for a while. i know many of you, including myself will be beating ourselves up for some atrocious mistakes made in that exam. we must remain confident heading into our next set of exams (although its methods for many of us:) ) so that we can come out on top.

best of luck to you all

Had a look over my teachers solutions, I think the only marks I lost were on the area of that complex region, some reason I worked out the length of the side. I found the exam pretty straightforward, MC section was longer than past papers, I wouldn't say harder. EA section was fine, I only freaked out on the very last bit when  I found t=-3.something, so I had to sketch it to find correct answer.

It was a bit too calculator reliant. Rushed the MC so don't know whether I made weird silly mistakes. Also would've liked more mechanics. Overall I think the length makes it a bit harder than last year. I think it is more difficult to get full marks as a result. I know a few smart kids who had to guess a couple of MCs at the end so...

quite a few mhs kids thought it was harder than last yr...hopefully A+ cutoff low-mid 60s

I hope so ;), that would be mad.

Yeah I got owned in MC. Made a few guesses just to realise on the way out that they were wrong :[

Yes I had trouble on the last question as well for a while. To do the last question using the solve function on the calculator you needed to restrict the domain of t when solving the equation in solve. e.g. 200 < t < 300 because you know t will be around 200-300 seconds. If you don't do this, it will only find solutions of t close to 0 (t = -3.10...) and will tell you "Warning: more solutions may exist". This is because it cannot search for all solutions from -infinity to +infinity values of t.

Yeah when I got that I just decided to graph it and find the intersection using that

will i get method marks, for using that value of t=3.11(for some stupid reason) and then using pythag to find the side??

does any know the A + cut off last year?

Last year the A+ cut off was 66/80
I suggest it will be probably be about 67-68 this year in my opinion
Here is the grade distribution for last year : http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vcaa/vce/statistics/2008/section3/vce_specialist_maths_ga08.pdf

It would depend on how you went in sacs and also in exam 1 as these could adversely affect your study score if they were much different relative to your score in exam 2 but I would suggest you would be aiming for a mid-range B to get about 31 or 32, so about 45 or so out of 80.

does anyone know whether you would be penalised for putting in asymptotes on the graph which is only defined between y = -10 and 10. i wasn't sure what to do as no part of the curve actually approaches an aysmptote but i put them in anyway. also i didn't label L and |z| = 2 on the argand diagram; the question didnt say sketch and label, it just said sketch; any suggestions?

I put asymptote I think. I guess the graph doesn't extend to infinities so it might not be appropriate but graph shows asymptotic behaviour right? Argh, I don't know.

yeah thinking about it, it definately doesn't show asymptotic behaviour on the restricted domain, but im not sure whether we would be penalised

RAGE wanted more mechanics :(

Anyone here think A+ cutoff will be lower?

Also for SS concerns, heard someone got a B for E1 and A for E2 and got a 37, dont know about SACs.

Would a 40 be possible with A+ SACs, A+ on E1 and high A on E2?

Yeah I think that is definitely possible.

Do you reckon getting a B+ in exam 1 and getting A+ in Exam 2 and A for SAC's(not moderated yet) can get you low 40's RAW?

Lol, this again. Well you know that if you wait until december 14th or 15th, you will know exactly how you went and what you got.
