Title: Methods for Commerce at UniMelb
Post by: doubleS on May 05, 2020, 07:33:59 pm
Just wondering if you have to be good at methods to do well in commerce? Especially if looking into doing a Finance major, would you say that not being that great at maths puts you at a big disadvantage?

Real talk having strong math knowledge would be beneficial to succeeding in finance/commerce but not essential. What I've experienced so far is is a lot of formula plugging is required. However, Im sure when you get to higher level units like DS or investments I'm sure I'd get more full on. In terms of passing Im sure if you are able to get admitted you should be able to pass given you put in some effort, however to compete for top marks you'll be going against dudes with mid high 40s in spesh.

Short answer you should do fine with being average at methods but for top grades you would be at disadvantage.

It's definitely not essential - but you'll need to upskill your maths going into Commerce.

Doing well in Methods makes your commerce life easier (and if you ever want to do some of the more maths-oriented jobs like actuary/trading or banking/asset management) you're going to need solid mathematics foundations.
