Considering you are doing 5 subjects in year 12. How hard is it to be able to perform well in specialist provided you are not a maths person but you are able to do well in you study? Some people say specialist requires most study out of all science and maths and that even if your really good, you will get around 40 only? If anyone can voice their opinion on this subject that will be great.

Spesh is massively overhyped imo. It's a cool subject, and it is the most difficult maths obviously, but it's not as exceedingly difficult as it was made out to be for me in years 10 and 11. It probably does require the most study out of all the science and maths subjects (apart from bio but let's stay away from that lol), but I disagree with the idea that even if you're really good you will only get 40. Like any other subject, 3 borderline A+s will for your three GAs will put you into contention for a 40. And honestly the exams aren't impossible hardcore maths, but they generally just test what's on the course with some good questions that will likely provoke a bit of thought but will also likely end up legitimately doable.
But it's very much a personal thing. Give an idea of your maths skill level, how are you doing this year in GMA/MM?

MM 80's
GMA 70's

I think if visual communication scaled 10+ and all the wannabe lawyers and doctors who had no interest for the subject but did it so that they could get their degree and some $$$ then it would become the hardest subjects since a lot of people would try to rote learn every brushstroke and panic about "what are they asking me to draw?".
Be open minded to it and firstly treat it as an intellectual discipline where you gain skills gradually, then apply them to the exam rather than learn how to do an exam without thinking about the maths beforehand. This approach will make it easier than English. (success of this method was proved by one of my students :) )

scaling compensates for the difficulty but it isnt 'that hard' just difficult to perfect.
-
Spesh is about 1.6 times harder than methods.
-
spesh should probably be taken if u enjoy maths...i can tell u right now that it will take a lot of ur study time if ur serious in doing well
personally, spesh is nearly all understanding concepts and a little bit (if not at all) of memorising.

Hi guys, im doing spesh this year and I was just wondering if I shud do spesh next year. Ive herd from ppl that spesh can get pretty tricky so I was wondering how much from spesh is carried
on to spesh next year, like is the stuff ive done in spesh this year relevant to spesh if I do it next year. Also, would I be able to cope with spesh next year if im averaging 80% in spesh this year. Sorry guys, im just worried, dont want to pick a subject if im gonna struggle in it too much :-\

OVER9000, having done Specialist Maths this year I can say personally it was a really interesting subject. If you are decent at maths, and if you enjoy a bit of maths from time to time, doing Specialist Maths can be really rewarding. After doing Specialist, you will also realise that Methods also becomes extremely easy. Specialist covers most of the Methods course, with mainly just the topic of probability which stands out alone for Methods. Considering you are averaging 80%, I think that is more than enough to continue with Specialist.
Comparing Specialist with General Maths in Year 11 I can say that some of the year 11 material is irrelevant, however, a lot of the theory learned in Year 11 is relearned in Year 12 and applied to more complex and difficult analysis problems. Year 11 General Maths is kind of like the grounding knowledge you will need to take on Specialist Maths. The topics which will be covered again are trigonometry, calculus, complex numbers, vectors and dynamics, but at a more complex level. This theory is re-taught in Year 12, however this time you will actually apply these concepts to questions, often utilising many of the 'ideas' you have come to learn to answer an analysis question or short answer questions in the final exams.
As kdgamz has said, Specialist is largely a 'concept' subject. You must understand the concept behind the maths to do well in it. Although doing 100 trial exam papers may help you understand how to do specific questions (which will help you for Exam One), if you do not understand the particular concepts, you will struggle to work through harder and more unique VCAA analysis questions in Exam Two. Overall though, I would say if you work consistently through the year, by the end of the year you will come to enjoy doing Specialist Maths rather than fear it.
Just my two cents :)

Thanks yeah. I just hope the stuff ive done this year in spesh will help me for spesh next year, im not too bad at iut but I hope it doesnt get much harder like ppl say it does. And yeh hopefully methods next year is like methods this year, I didnt find methods too hard so im hopin methods next year will be similar to what ive done this year (methods 3/4).

Btw do you think spesh would be a good choice for me next year? Coz I'm averaing 50% ish in legal studies.
getting 50% in legal studies will give you the basics so yeah, i think you will do fine next year.

Basically most of the stuff you learn in legal studies is carried over to spesh so if ur doing really well (~50%) then I think you should go for it.

lmao, yes legal studies provide the foundations for success as OVER 9000 said, theres nothing to worry about !! :)

Hey guys, should I take spec next year considering i've been averaging a field's medal every four years?

Definitely not, you should be in the olympics in London. with that talent you need to push harder and average over9000 medals
ps: last exam tomos pumped!!

it is not about whether it is hard or not.........it is about ur interest for maths.......i am a non science student and i laugh at myself becoz i did spesh this year........dunno why......overall.....i have to say that this is a fun subject.....it makes u to hate it as well as loving it.........

I think you will find that with enough dedication and diligence, you will be able to have a successful year in spesh next year. Most of the topics you would have studied on ur field trip thingy will be similarly covered by spesh as well, so gl.

lol its funny how threads nearly always go off-topic :D

Eh, why is spesh related to legal studies?
Hey guys, I don't do Legal Studies right now, but do you think if I picked it up next year though, my Spesh performance may increase??
Say... around 50% better?
I'm hoping so, Spesh will be tough without a Legal Studies background. :(

Hey guys I did Specialist last year, should I do Legal next year to boost my study score in Specialist? My SAC average is

guys pl0x bump? I need some advice. What textbook should I use? Should I get Checkpoints or A+ notes? Does anyone have Jack's notes to sell me? thanks guys means a lot <3
[ps this is ridiculous :P]

Mao, if u feel that you have a sound knowledge of all the concepts in spesh, you will find legal studies easy as I did. Basically Legal studies is like the 3/4 of spesh and will basically be very similar. If your sac average is 30\pi, you will definitely find legal easy. I suggest for ur text book you should get the "book of childrens names" as it has many useful names that can help you apply different formulae required in legal studies.

At my school, we used, "Quotations from Chairman Mao" instead of your book.
It still had relevant/similar facts and formuale.
I don't think the Spec course has changed much since Friday, so it's still relevant until next Thursday.
And the legal course is still the same, so if you want to do well in Spec, I suggest reading both textbooks^^^
Try to have most of the book completed by first class 2010, so you can impress the teacher by how fluent you are in Chinese.
Hope that helps!
Being fluent in Chinese isnt near as advantageous for spesh as legal studies is. You need legal guys, I cant stress that enuff. Put the hard yards in for legal studies and you will reap the rewards for spesh. Just remember to put the hard yards in before the exams and ull find the hard yards will help you for spesh. I did spesh last year and I found it wasnt anywhere near as relevant to spesh this year as opposed to legal studies which I think shud be the mainstream for the maths course in yr 11.
-
OKaysss...so now i'm confused :o
How does by doing legal, improve spech? Aren't they two different subjects?
TC,
Souljette<3

Wait, i am fluent in Chinese and i did spesh and legal this year.............and i still dun see the connection............555 .......pls .....some1 explain to ME !

Confucious says, he who buries a man's wife alive, should not expect to sit at that man's dinner table without the subject coming up.

Hmm. I thought he said, he who murders a man's wife at the dinner table, should not expect dessert.

i have a genuine question haha, how difficult is spesh to do without 1/2 whilst doing methods the same year? how much of study would be required to get like 38-40 raw when averaging B+'s in methods without too much work?
another question, a friend of mine/my curiosity is wondering the same (picking up spesh without 3/4) but already done methods 3/4?
thanksss
-
Doing 3/4 methods the same year averaging B+ in methods. To get a 38-40 would require a lot of study (say 1-2 hours of dedicated spesh a night).
Your friend having done 3/4 last year, how good is he?
I dono maybe he could suffice with ~1hr a night of spesh.

she did 3/4 in year 10 and got 35, didn't really study much because, understandably, she didn't really understand much about vce then :P
oh, so still 1hr a night? like 7'ish hours a week? :| that sounds like quite a lot haha.
-
^ haha. i don't know if i'd be able to do that. :|
but it sounds like if i actually made an effort to do that, i'd be rewarded kindly :)
are you studying like that for spesh next year?
-
I will be yeah :)!
Study hard for good results ;).
hah good, goodluck with studying!
-
You will be too! ;)
haha. i don't think i'm going to do it, i was just wondering,
and if i did, i may do it in year 13, since i'll only be doing 2 subjects. (ha...)
-
2 subjects :S?
well if i did an extra year i'd only want to do 2 subjects. plus i'd have so much time to study for spesh if i was to do it as one of them:D
-
Ahh as if you want to go through year 12 all again! :P
haha i may not, but it's not repeating year. it's like a gap year with a little bit of work;)
-
Ahhh a gap year :).
yepp ;).
-
"spesh is fun" i lied to myself throughout 2009 just to gain myself some confidence.
now, i reckon its time to be true to myself and say “numbers are dull”. :P
-
i've heard that specialist takes up 90% of overall study time, is that true?
-
Spesh isn't that hard - it's 85% old Methods 3/4 + Physics 1/2 + GMA stuff
English and Chem are both harder than Spesh IMO.
-
Based on the fact that Specialist was my highest subject and only 50, we can safely assume that it is an easy subject :P

Clearly Jimmy999 did Legal Studies 1/2 in Yr 10.

man, the quality of posts on VN seem to have deteriotated in recent times
wonder if bos being down has anything to do with it

Actually, I'll make a last comment 8 months after my original comment. It's interesting to see what I said back then.
Now I think that Physics, English, and Chem are all harder than Spesh.

agreeeeee
I also think that English is harder than Spesh.
But i also think this post may be invalid because i do neither...
