Split rings generally used in the commutator of a DC motor. Their purpose (or the prupose of the commutator)  is to reverse the current every half turn so as to maintain a torque which enables the motor to continue rotating in the same direction. They are also used in a DC generator where voltage does not change direction.

Slip-rings are used in AC generators, or alternators, to produce a sinusoidal current.

wow. I never bothered to read the middle of each of those words and always assumed they were the same.
