Title: Which tricky question got you?
Post by: Deon on November 11, 2009, 10:17:04 pm
I hated Question 17.

Quote
Question 17

A task performed by a network operating system (NOS) includes

A. saving a file to a laptop hard drive.
B. authenticating users' access to the network printer.
C. changing the mouse click speed for a new user at a workstation.
D. displaying an alert when a flash drive is first plugged into a workstation.

As someone who works in network management - a "NOS" (eg: Windows Server 2003 for example) can do B, C or D.

Most schools use Group Policy to roll out things like C to stop kids changing them and stuffing the computers up for the next person, with themes or backgrounds or - in this case - dodgy mouse speeds.

The Group policy (pushed out by the "NOS") refreshes these settings based on the masters every time the computer is booted.

D is similar - those alerts can be turned on or off and then pushed out via Group Policy.

I went for C myself since it seemed the most appropriate of choices.

The correct answer was B. Although, technically a NOS doesn't authenticate users access to a printer, it authenticates the users access to the network. The user then automatically gets the printers set out in the GP or SecPol.

Am I going too deep here?

Multiple choice is about selecting the best answer.

Not all network operating systems are capable of doing C and D 'out of the box', nor do they need to in order to meet the definition of a network operation system. One of the key functions of any NOS is to allow and control access to the network at its resources. A NOS, by definition, does not need to control mouse click speed or display a alert on detecting a new flash drive. This means that B is the most correct answer.

You have to remember that these questions are meant to be technology neutral. Yes, you are correct that Windows Server can do those functions through AD and group policy but that is not the point of this exam.

The question i have my biggest problem is question 9 on the short answer.
It states "Layout and Relevance are two design elements to be evaluated in the website shown above."
Looking in the ITA Glossary design elements are listed as "...In this study these elements are proportion (visual hierarchy), orientation (direction/aspect), clarity and consistency, colour and contrast, usability and accessibility, appropriateness, relevance"

Now call me blind, but i don't see layout listed in there anywhere!  Wasn't too sure what specifically after here.

Put two and two together, bearing in mind that these exams are generally poorly written.

I'd group proportion and orientation under the heading 'layout'. Possibly colour and contrast too.

Yea i ended up writing about orientation and proportion, will be interesting to see how that question comes back.

Yeah I got that too.

I did that too, orientation was my main point.

^I wrote about them two too, as the image took a large proportion of the page etc
