i got a D+ on our folio review lol.
i have done a fair bit in my folio i have been looking at photography too but mainly the depiction of movement through a still frame and the interpretation of this through dance...
hows everyones theory going? i have been neglecting it a bit lately, the artists we are studying are Anna Platten and Mary Cassatt and Gorden Bennett and Fredrick MC Cubbin.. kind of struggling with this interpretive framework thing but doing good with the formal interpretation and visual analysis.

I did Vis Comm in year 12 last year. If you guys need any help with your folio or theory stuff, just ask. What are you doing for your first folio, cathtacular?

i'm doing a corporate identity package including a logo, business card and letter head for a Melbourne accessory/clothing store aimed at teens and young adults and i'm also doing a series of packaging for a range of products for the same store.
what did you do for both of you folios?

For the first one I designed a mobile phone and presented it in an advertisement, along with a new logo for the phone company (Nokia). My second folio was a lot bigger; I designed a public library, a library card, a logo for the library and a library website. I made the library card, built a scaled model of the library and the website was fully functional. I might post some pictures later tonight. Perhaps others could do the same..

sorry but what is a folio review?? does the teacher just check your folio and see how you're going? tbqh i do not like my teacher and never feel comfortable with her looking at my work (but of course this is inevitable)... which is really weird and stupid, i know.

for viscomm i am designing a museum building along with a new logo, and advert poster for it's 'grand opening'. re: two folios, is the second folio for semester two? i don't understand...

in vis com you do 1 folio a semester in semester 1 you have to create something 2d and 3d where as in semester 2 your less restricted.

a folio review is pretty much what you said you get a grade for where you are up to and you and your teacher have to sign a vcaa form to say your work is your own or something. i don't like my art teacher either and she doesn't really like me she isn't a very good teacher but i don't really feel comfortable showing many people my folio i went to a folio course the other day in port melbourne turns out heaps of people do more than 1 final piece.. which i didn't think was normal as our teacher said we only do 1... i quite like the idea of doing more than one though... what are you doing?

i have not had a folio review yet... i didnt know such a thing existed! lol.

wow my teacher told us the exact opposite. she said that 1 final is not enough. she said we should aim to produce ~3 pieces, especially if the size of our pieces is smaller like a3 or a2.

i'm doing painting on canvas. what are you doing?

Post by: cathtacular on March 16, 2008, 04:09:27 pm
im not sure what im doing, our teacher told us we should have no idea about what our final piece will be like and we dont start testing materials and techniques until term 3... but our art teacher is mad because everyone else ive spoken to has done around 3 final pieces... although im hoping to do photography but probably large scale but i just didnt tell my teacher that yet! we are probably the only school doing one final piece..

but.. you're supposed to have a theme and continually work around that theme by producing numerous possible solutions illustrating your ideas and stuff, right? at the very start my teacher made us tell her what we plan to do for our finals, like painting, photography, sculture, mixed media, drawing etc. as well as our theme.

also our teacher says we can start researching and testing materials and techniques now..

if your teacher is telling you not to do all this stuff, then what are you guys doing now?!?! it seems like you can't do much..

are studio arts and art the same thing? because i am doing studio arts... not art.

Art is a bit different to studio art. I think art is more theoretical.

art has more of an emphasis on theory (at least in the mark allocations) whereas studio art is more practical. in studio art, it's basically the same as photography where you have a statement of intention and a potential resolution in mind throughout most of your experimenting - your work is very directed.

in art though, you can start with whatever you want and you don't necessarily have to have a theme.

i do art and no one in my class (including me) has done any final pieces. don't stress about how many finals you end up with - as long as your ideas are "resolved" in some way, you can have as few or as many as you want...

oh! thanks for clearing that up!

i can see how studio arts is very directed. in our work brief we had to create a 'plan' in regards to our folio; sort of like a timetable of what we should be doing week by week. the subject actually seems very structured and orderly now that i think about it...

on another note....i'm looking for an artist of influence who uses "mise en abyme" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mise_en_abyme) to put in my folio. it's like that whole idea of a picture in a picture, or the effect you get when you stand between two mirrors and they infinitely reflect. does anyone know of an artist like this?
Title: Re: anyone doing art or vis comm 2008??
Post by: cathtacular on March 28, 2008, 11:16:01 am
studio art and art are different. your required to produce 3 final products in studio and you dont have to produce any in art, in studio you also have to write a statement of intention and know what your going to do.. like you said but also a lot of schools doing art also stick with the one theme and produce numerous solutions or may just resolve them in their folio and not physically produce the artwork.  at the moment we should kind of have a direction and im looking at movement depicted in a still frame but im looking at dance to show this. we are still told that we dont know what were doing so its hard to keep trying to resolve something for another 2 terms because i feel im already to the point where there is nothing left to resolve... if that makes sense.

Hi, I'm doing art this year too. My theme is "flowers" and I'm already half-way through my first visual diary. Although I still feel like I havent done that much work and am behind.

I just wanted to ask if anyone could give me further advice on what things I need to include in my visual diary to get an A+ folio.

Thanks

o hai rosie! i'd like to request kids by MGMT... thnx! (sorry)

it's quality over quantity, but maybe you could do a million different variations on each of your possible solutions? maybe try to expand on your theme and find a deeper meaning or something as well. you may be able to explore many more other ideas...

for a final, someone should produce an installation featuring themselves, much like http://www.tate.org.uk/tateshots/episode.jsp?item=13043. i hate examiners.

if your looking at flowers and say are doing photography do something different like go into the botanic gardens and get on the ground next to alot of them and take some panoramas of what the flower sees so take on the persona of a flower or something, remember to explore ALL the ways to look at flowers or how different people or animals see them etc so to a child or animal a flower might look huge to a adult it would look rather small, or you could zoom right in and focus on the centre of a flower or the leaves. do you have an idea about what medium you want to work with? or are confident with??

I'm doing studio arts.. My theme is street design (art - graffiti) and how it has become a symbol of the way Melbourne is perceived and known.

I am about half way through my first folio, i've just collected a lot of inspirational photos of landmarks, graffiti ect and then I have done a few painting tests (paint splats to resemble "graffiti"). It's scary to think about how much more I need to have but I have no idea of what else to put (except for trials ect).
Does anyone have any viewpoints on how I could expand on my theme to bring about new ideas and concepts?

look at how Melbourne is perceived by different people, for some people its an escape, some home, some people hate Melbourne.
look at the intricate side of Melbourne for symbols and the values different people have in Melbourne which are shown in the way certain people perceive Melbourne.
- multiculturalism
- historical
- economic
- social
also look at how these have changed over time,

look at what these mean for different  people and how these people express themselves, for instance some might paint pictures of their favorite places in Melbourne or graffiti, some might open shops or cafes etc

go and talk to people in Melbourne from really different socio-economic backgrounds.
talk to people in Macdonald's, street performers etc about what they think Melbourne is about.

you can (like i said earlier, im blabbing) look at how this is shown to everyone or even really quiet and forgotten etc.

i hope that helps (and makes sense)

i found this, i thought it was cool

usually flowers are really colorful so i really like this
look at things that arnt as pretty traditionally as flowers, and get pushed aside or something that is ugly juxtaposes the prettiness of a flower and combine the two

Thanks for that, I might use your ideas for a second piece. I'm actually planning to do my first piece on canvas, paint. Combining the human figure with flowers but are having trouble with drawing.

i hate drawing sooo much
but if your using a human figure you could project a photo onto your canvas and then trace around it, everyone does it :)

Hey guys, amm you know all the folio about 2 or 3 final pieces your all talking about, is that about unit 4 right?
At our school, we are to design 2 final pieces and mine are going to be a wedding envelope and invitation card that are going together and a wedding favor.
We have to like go through this whole refinement and design stage.
Hopefully i can get over 37 because the scaling is horrible.
