Title: Don't get excited with A+
Post by: kenhung123 on November 28, 2009, 10:41:19 am
I have heard a few cases where A+ for all 3 GA's still resulted a 37-39!!
Ultimately A+ doesn't mean all that much after all?

It does happen. But those are normally borderline low A+s for all 3 GAs.

Or maybe you expected too much to begin with. A high 30's is a good study score.

Ouch, that's a bit harsh. IS that how competitive/Difficult it is?
What is a better than a A+, or what score higher than A+ would you need for 40+?
i dropped Biology in year 11 semester 1, couldn't cope with the memorising :)

VCAA sets ranges for A+ to ensure that only the top 9% of people are in this range. so i am a bit suspicious about the definition of the A+ you are referring to.

This year's physics GA2, for example, has a high A+ cut-off for the exam, where only those who have lost less than 4 marks are granted an A+. Imagine, if you have lost 5 marks in this exam, you will be merely getting an A for this exam, whereas using our common/general definition of an A+ ( 90-100%), you will be in the A+ range.

Maybe those who claimed that they got A+'s found their grades without considering the cut-offs....?

So your saying all values of A+ are equivalent? But do other subjects have cases where A+ for all 3GA's result <40 SS?

Well, yeah...A+ in exams for bio can be anywhere from 80%-100%. Naturally, it's a subject the whole state does terrible in.

LOTE's do, a friend of mine got 3 A+ for Chinese SLA and got a 39.

yaya that happens, a friend's got 3A+ for Jap and only got a 39.

but 37-39 is a bit too low..

Edit: Wait..Still A+ is a ranking in a sense because only top 9% gets A+ as you said. But then other subjects 3 A+ would mean 40+. So that would include low A+'s (low ranking) in other subs too won't it?

you can get 39 or even 38 with three low A+'s by
1) sacs are from a weak cohort
2) A+ cutoff includes more than 8~9% of state, some exams have 10% getting A+

:P

Isn't A+ range a ranking not a mark? So why would the % of people getting A+ change?

not too sure to be honest. but for example, written exam 2, 12% got A+.

41 is all I need for Uni Bio :D! Hoping...

All the best.
