From the uni mid-year exams discussion, I saw that you had to write essays in the physics examination. What are the essays like? Ie. how long are they and what are the general questions like?
I need to minor in something so I'm most likely choosing physics. However, the thought of writing essays in examinations is kind of off-putting. Writing essays for research assignments are fine, but IMO, it's a different case when writing them under exam conditions.

Your going to Monash right?
With UoM, students who do standard physics have to write essays, but the advanced students don't. You should see if Monash offers physics advanced.

What are the prerequisites for physics advanced at melb uni?

Yep, I'm going to Monash. I don't think I'll be doing physics advanced, though :P (not good enough)
Although you don't do standard physics, do you know what their essays are like?

atleast 35 in physics and specialist maths (I got in with a 33 for spesh and a 39 for physics - I basically said I really want to do advanced physics and the physics coordinator said since I got a 39 in physics I can go into advanced physics).
Physics advanced is a very intense subject in terms of how the pace is. But the professors say that physics advanced students have an advantage over their standard counteparts when you do second year physics (there is no longer any second year advanced physics subjects). I survived it (actually 1% off an H1 for physics advanced 1), with physics 2 advanced I felt more confident with the subject, but I would be happy with 75%.
Basically if you enjoy your physics and love calculus, then do advanced physics.

I'll look over one of the exam papers (at uni, the library database has 1000's of exams).

don't worry, there are no essays in monash first year physics.

Thank you! :D

I know. But if I minor in physics, I have to do the 12 of 24 points in second year as well so essays would be inevitable :P

lucky for you, physics is one of the few science subjects with past exams from within the last decade available in the database:
