Title: Transfer to Melbourne (from other uni)
Post by: peteriscool on December 09, 2009, 12:14:59 am
I don't think I'll obtain the ENTER to get into commerce at Melbourne, so wondering what their policy is regarding a transfer?

As an example, would it be possible to do first year commerce at Deakin, do well, and get a transfer into second year Melbourne and finish the course there?

Thanks in advance.

hmm actually I spoke to someone who has just completed their first year at Deakin Geelong Commerce a couple of days ago and is considering transferring.
He has said that he has looked into gaining credit at Deakin and then transferring into Uni of Melb second year. However, he has discovered that Melb uni and Monash pretty much do not consider credit for deakin commerce and he might be able to transfer but may need to repeat first year commerce at melb uni.

However, he didn't seem too positive on this and you should probably contact Melbourne University as they will be able to give you an accurate answer.

I know the Go8 Unis have some kind of arrangement where marks/subjects completed in one year directly transfer to another Uni.

As for non-Go8 transferring to Go8 (ie Deakin to Uom) it's a pretty full on process.

First thing you'd have to do is go through both Deakin and UoM Commerce handbooks and make sure the subjects that each do in first year "match up"

This again is much more laborious process then it may seem.

From their website: http://www.futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/ugrad/apply/aust/transfer.html

Credit (advanced standing) for completed tertiary studies may be granted if any of the previous studies are comparable in content, equivalent in standard and suitable to be included as part of the course.

Basically from memory I think that every subject you apply for has to be at least 80% similar to a subject (that you could normally take) in first year BComm at UoM (I apologise I've lost my source for this).

If you're not from Go8 Uni they'll most likely assess this case-by-case. I've heard that it can be quite a pain and that generally you'll have to do most of the work 'proving' that each subject matches an equivalent - although this is purely anecdotal so take with a grain of salt.

Here's the rules for transferring, not sure if it's the most recent version though: http://www.ecom.unimelb.edu.au/downloads/Undergrad/Credit%20Policy%20Version%2006_08_07.pdf

Take a look through each course structure:

UoM: http://www.bcom.unimelb.edu.au/bachelor/course_structure.html#core
Deakin Uni: http://www.deakin.edu.au/future-students/courses/course.php?course=M300&stutype=local&keywords=Bachelor%20of%20Commerce

Best thing you can do is call up UoM or go to their Info-day on the 17th Dec

Thanks very much guys.

Red, that seems like a good idea. I will compare both the structures now and definitely attend their open day. I also may send them a quick e-mail too. I'm sure other students have been in the same boat as myself so hopefully they can give a quick answer.

If I can't transfer into second year, maybe I'll take the first year option and get the degree at melbuni, since Deakin isn't really known for being a 'great university' and every advantage I can get can help.
