Title: Six subjects in year 12?
Post by: Nic K on December 16, 2009, 10:00:34 pm
Hi all,

Just need to hear some advice about subjects. Next year I am planning to do english, geography, national politics, environmental science and theatre studies. Recently I have started considering also doing drama but I am not sure whether it is worth the risk of doing 6 subjects.

Clearly it will be more work so I am just wondering how difficult it is to do six subjects in year 12 and whether it would affect my performance in other subjects.

i think it would be pretty full on, my friend is doing 6... 5 inside of school and a LOTE outside of school on saturdays....
i think shes crazy though

i think you should just work on 5 since you have already done one this year because and extra one will in some way affect your performance in your other subjects...
the only time i would do 6 is if i reallyyyyy wanted to do that 6th subject

Yeah it would definitely be a huge challenge. I just think I really want to do drama but at the same time don't want to drop any of my subjects. It would be awesome to also hear from some people who did 6 subjects this year to see how they managed/didn't manage :)

Thanks for your advice!

i would also like to know what people think as i am considering doing a 6th subject out of school just for fun (my school most likely wont approve as i'm already doing enhancement).

Drama and Theatre Studies are similar in many aspects. If I were in your positions I'd probably be choosing between one of the two. However, having said that, a lot of the content being learnt is the same. Theatre Studies has a focus on stagecraft and design while Drama is solely acting. In Theatre "acting" is one of the said stagecrafts. So I'm sure you'd find a lot of doubling up. It means two monolougues at the end of the year, as well.

Considering that you already have a subject from this year, if I were you I would be studying 5 in year 12. It is ridiculously busy and often stressful, and I don't feel I would have managed with 6 subjects this year.
That being said, everybody is different and you might manage perfectly well with 6 subjects. Just remember that you may be able to achieve higher on your 5 subjects if you have a bit more time, and since only 6/7 can count, this might be more important than having an extra subject.

i personallly am doing 6 subjects i think but i also get free periods during school to catch up on subjects... wait is uni maths counted as a subject :S

yes it is, it should take about the same amount of your time as any other subject so IMO yes

I'm doing six next year :P Hope Further doesn't affect my performance in my other subjects  :tickedoff:
I enjoy all my subjects, so it shouldn't be a problem ;D

I'm doing six subjects next year too, although only because I've heard Uni subjects don't really count as a full subject.  Also, I plan on only really concentrating my full efforts on three subjects (although I won't neglect the others; just won't put as much work into them).

Which 3?

Next year my main focus will be English, as with all my other subjects the region of 45+ is differentiated by as little as 1 or 2 points from a 50. I plan on concentrating on Physics, Specialist and Further as well as English. Then fifth and sixth subjects as Chem and MUEP. I don't have the comfort of a 50 this year :buck2:

For myself, with three maths I assume a little overlap.

English, Literature and Specialist Maths, since they're the ones with the most potential in high scores for me.  With some work I think I might be able to push myself towards a mid-40s score in Spesh, and English+Literature have always been my best subjects.  :p

Still, I'm leaving Japanese and Philosophy in there because Japanese has a high markup and Philosophy is random enough for it to possibly be in the top 4.  MUEP will obv. be in the bottom 2.  :D

Probably not 50, but I think it's possible for me to get above 45 if I'm lucky, haha.  I'm saying random though because some absolutely brilliant kids (I'm talking 50s in English) got very low 40s, whilst the year before similar sorts got scores as high as 47.  I guess it just depends on fate.  :p

Is that the same as your predicted 44 in Classics...
As if 45 will make your top 4.

Do you go to some posh school? Maybe they're worried you may not perform as well in your others, hence dragging their median down.

yeah i do. but i don't know if they are worried about that since regardless i will help push it up as my school isn't so great. considering i got the highest psych score at my school this year... :P

teachers get nervous around them
get them to say stuff like they are disadvantaging you by not letting you do what you want and that other schools would let you take 6 subs on

hmm thats what i thought but since these are persons of grand authority, they don't cave in. i was with my dad last time and lost with englang.
but i don't want her to argue, then decide not to do it, i'll ask her again in a month if i decide i really want to.

Mmm I'm going to prioritize English and Spesh. Chinese is my lowest priority as it will probably be my 7th subject. But I think Spesh is going to end up being easier than Chem or Physics for me, so I'll probably end up spending the same effort on Physics, Chem, and Spesh.

^ i'm glad to see a couple of others doing 5 subjects & a uni subj in year 12 (six all up).
i'm decided on starting off with six, i don't think a uni subj requires as much work but it will definitely help with vce chem so may as well stick with it! so it's basically like doing 5 subjects, and just spending a few hours a week going beyond the course for one subject :P

(sorry to revive an old'ish thread)

... [Further is] easy ...
That was part of my thought process too.
I concluded Spesh+Uni math+Further=2 subjects
So I am really only doing 5. :P

peedlesssssss i think doing 6 VCE subjects is harder than 5 VCE and a uni, as the uni aids in one of the other vce subjects whilst adding to your ENTER more than other subject would (as a 6th subj)!

ooooohh.... i assumed since it was "UNI" it was harder and required more work.. Its not at all bad to have like a 5.5 aggregate in ur bottom 2 every aggregate counts :) Well good luck to you and from the looks of things you'll have things under control and own VCAA ;)

I wasn't only thinking of score; all of my subjects interest me(except English...for now). 99 would be quite useful in terms of scholarships and so on.

i think most of us do enhancement for interest, i just got a bunch of emails from my monash email about days and info. and i am really excited now :D i have my first full prac day at the end of jan.

No, I am not doing further for the ease of a high score. I like maths. Originally I was considering redoing Methods but then thought 'why repeat a subject?'. Hence I chose the only maths I hadn't planned to complete, being Further. It is true I am hopingworking for 50(I dislike 'hoping' to me it holds an air of expectancy), this is mainly because I love maths, truth be told I am also working towards 50 in Specialist too.

I am starting to get worried, I haven't received anything from Monash yet  :-\

Henceforth I am 'fishing' for particular study score's.:P Fishing works well in that you can only do so much preparation, after this, your result is entirely dependent on the happenings of the actual day, such as: nerves, mistakes, etc.
