Hello everyone (: I moved down here at the start of this year from NSW. I've completed year 11 this year and I'll be completing year 12 in 2010
Although I've met a lot of wonderful people so far, I've had the slight disadvantage of not knowing anyone who would tell me when open days are, good lectures, good tutors, best studyguides etc.
My schools not too flash either but I really really want to do well next year (at least 99)
I was wondering, could anyone point me in the right direction? What should I do to get the most out of next year?
Should I revise all of Units 1&2(as i missed out on a lot) or get started on 3&4 during the summer holidays? Just things like that would be extremely helpful
Thank you very much for your time (:
My Subjects are;
English
Chemistry
Bio
Further
Methods

Welcome to Vic tezza:) maybe you can let us know what subjects you are doing next year?

Thanks Vexx (:
I added my subjects

First things, open days aren't until August. That's also the same month when VTAC (uni applications) open.
In terms of your subjects, you'll be fine with English. Just read your texts.
For Chemistry, this will be the hardest to do if you don't know much stuff from Unit 1/2.
Make sure to go over the mole concept, look at concentrations, stoichiometric calculations, gas laws and revise writing equations. Basically go over all the maths involved in Unit 1/2. That's all we did for my year 12 orientation last year. If you understand that stuff you should be fine with everything else. Oh you could go over some organic chem. Would be very useful.
Further you should be able to pick it up easily. I have no clue with Bio as I didn't do it.
Methods, best to go over functions and relations, and the sketching involved with it. Also if you're weak on trig, then definately go over that. Also if you've never done them before, try to teach yourself Matrices.
Good luck with the transition. Feel free to message me or ask anyone on the forum for help

depending on what your subject score goals are and strengths/weaknesses.
if your motivated enough, learn the main ideas/concepts in chem & bio (mainly photosynthesis/respiration and such)
and learn most of the further and methods course. and read over your books for english, then find study guides on the upload place
http://www.mediafire.com/cleoxo
and read over them to get an idea:)
really up to you waht you can do.
there are some fantastic tutors on here that can guide your through 'summer tutoring'
so look about and post questions here if you need help:)
goodluck to you!
edit, jimmy beat me but meh.

Speaking of tutors, i highly recommend Jack for Methods and Chemistry.
There is a thread of testimonies about his teaching here:

No, Board of Studies is NSW's version of VCAA. BoS is Bored of Studies (the forum), which is punning on the phonetics of the word "board".

^ haha oh, yeah i get it now :P silly me.

Don't worry about it. It's lame, I know. lol
-
Wow...never thought something smart (and punishable) would come out of BoS. To bad its the only decent thing to come out of it...
On topic; Welcome to Victoria, the place to be! Just wondering, are you subjects 100% set? If I was you, I wouldn't go straight into 3 + 4 Chemistry unless it was a pre-requisite for the course you want to get into simply because its quite annoying to grasp.
-
^there's a book called 'Jumpstart Chemistry', which is available to buy online - i've heard that it is very good to do oversummer to prepare you for 3/4 if you haven't done 1/2. definitely look into it.

Thanks for all the replies so far!
I want to become a dentist or a GP. Which path should I aim for and are there any pathways/fallback plans if I dont make it?
Oh, and could someone please explain what a graduate/undergraduate/bachelor/postgraduate etc. course is? and the differences between them?
-
To become a GP you can try too complete a BMBS at Deakin or Monash Uni;

http://www.monash.edu.au/study/coursefinder/course/0040/
Or you can do Bachelor of Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne then do a Doctor of Medicine (or Dental Surgery for Dentist) if your grades are good enough during your Bachelor studies.

well do the UMAT next year, and apply for undergrad med and dent in various locations - including a possible interstate. if you dont get in, do an undergad science/biomed course, and do the prereqs for graduate med for melb (2nd year level anatomy, biochemistry & physiology) and again apply for various graduate med/dent courses. if you dont want to do a science-type degree, or dont want to do these prereqs. you can still apply for all unis for med/dent except melb which is the only one atm that requires certain subjects.

Oh i see ;D
So what ENTER would I be aiming for?
What scholarships are available for me to apply for?

im not too sure on scholarships, but aim for 99+ if your goal is med/dent.
