Theoretical Physics
-
I will be doing science at Monash next year hoping (at this point) to double-major in Applied and Pure Mathematics and minor in Atmospheric Science.
-
meeeee science/law
(mainly bio, a bit of chem)
-
Theoretical Physics
Theoretical physics ftw.
I am, I'm doing Bcomm/Bsci at Monash next year hoping to major in finance and pure maths :)
This is similar to what I'm doing as my breadth allows me to do all finance subjects.
Anyone who is doing science at UoM and doesn't know whether to major in pure maths or physics. Do a mathematical physics major. You can do a partial major in physics and pure/applied maths so after your BSc degree you can do a MSc(Maths) or MSc(Physics).
-
Yeah but mathematical physics is all Differential Geometry and Lie Theory and stuff. Really boring :(
-

lol, I don't like Physics mixed with Maths, I rather Pure Maths on it's own :)
-
I'm doing science/engineering. Will definately maths major, possibly a double major, depends on how I feel on chem later
-
yep, I am.
Mechatronics eng and science at Monash
-

woooo! another bcomm person! =D
-
yep, I am.
Mechatronics eng and science at Monash
Looks like we'll get a few classes/lectures together
What science electives do you plan to pick up in first year? I'll be doing chem and probably physics (though have to start with foundation physics)

Where can I see the choices?
Most likely something to do with Physics

LOL! - Don't tell me u just picked it without looking at the subjects! It's bad to go in blindfolded :buck2:
-
lol QuantumJG is already in uni! If you count the people in uni there are a lot doing science!
-
oh eh wateva where's all the other ppl doing science now?
-
There are quite a few of us later years doing science.
-
who?
-
I'm one of the oldies, who has just finished the science part of my combined degree, where I majored in applied maths. As Humph alluded to, there are quite a few others as well, like Ahmad, Neobeo et al.
-
I wanna do science/engineering at monash next year. At this stage I'm thinking chemical engineering, along with maths and physics for the science component.

Yay for someone pursuing a practically identical course to me :)
-
lol, and to make things weirder, we had identical post counts when you posted that! ***SPOOKY***
I was actually thinking of majoring in chem instead of physics, but now you've posted that it would just look like I was stalking you, lol.

Besides the eng part, same (:

B.Sc is part of my double degree. Too bad Monash is tight on course regulations and won't let me minor AND major in maths. :(

Really? I called them up (not the 1800-MONASH number but the other student enquiries number) and the lady told me that I can major in maths but I have to minor in something else.
Thanks for showing that Damo but now I'm more confused. I guess I'll ask them at O-week or something (maybe that policy is for the single degree of BSc and not BSc combined with something else?)

14 people doing science, a handful on vcenotes
so most of you are doing maths and physics...
there's no bio type ppl! lol
I'm a bio type person, just like TrueLight hahaahhaha :P

woot .... ur doing exactly what im doing! except ur in melbourne!
i like ur quote
"I survived Zoology and Botany." lol

you can double major in maths which is the same as getting a major and minor in maths.
-
Minor in Mathematics - 24 points, with at least 12 points at level 2
Major in Mathematics - Minor + 24 points, with at least 18 points at level 3
Double Major in Mathematics - Major in Mathematics + 24 points, with at least 18 points at level 3
Minors are incorporated in Majors. If you want to major, you must minor in it first.

Well to do a PhD you need to do either an honours degree or a masters degree. Now an honours requires only 1 year, but you have more pressure on you to complete your coursework and get your thesis done.
-
i am most certainly almost exclusively a biol type person XD
-
Hey guys
i want to update this
So just wanted to know
Who is doing Bachelor of Science (whether that is single degree or double degree)
What year you are in?
Where you are doing it?
What majors and/or minors you are doing or planning to do?
-
If ive made a mistake or left out any details please correct me
If anyone is missing just reply here
-
I'm doing 2nd year Science at UoM! Majoring in Microbiology, Infection and Immunology. :)
-
ou cool what do you want to do after third year?
-
ou cool what do you want to do after third year?
Honors. :)
-
Course details, etc: In Sig
Intended Major: Got absolutely no idea... Oh dear.
-
Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws (@ Monash): Major in Physics
Currently in second year
-
Science (Maths) at UoM, third year (almost done!)
-
feel free to update the details guys if you know what you are going to be doing next year
-
Still doing Bsc/Bcomm, 2nd year student, pure maths/finance/actuarial triple major.
-
Still PhB (Science), 2nd year, majors in Mathematics and Physics
-
Okay mine has slightly changed (only in the major).
2nd year - Bachelor of Science (Maths) and Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) (@ Monash)
I've decided to not do a Chemistry major anymore because I want to double major in Maths. I'll either end up doing a double major in Applied Maths or a major in Pure and Applied Maths; it all depends on how much I like Pure maths next year. For now though it can simply stay as Maths major :)
-
Still doing science majoring in mathematical physics.
See signature for subjects.
-
ok thanks so 3rd yr 2011
-
TL requested me to update, so here I go:
I'm still going to pursue the double degree in engineering/science but I'm contemplating at the moment on whether I should go ahead with mechatronics engineering or switch to electrical and computer systems engineering. What should a man like myself do? For the science component of the double degree, I'm definitely going to double major in Computer Science as it meets my interests but I have no clue on what to major in for engineering. Mechatronics or Electrical?
-
maybe crappy, ryley or jimmy can give some suggestions
but what do you have more interest in?
-
^ My brother did a double degree [engineering (mechatronics)/computer science], from what I've seen, there are few good jobs available in Australia in mechatronics, but if you're fine with going overseas, there are some awesome opportunities working for car companies, or with robotics, etc.
Likewise with comp systems engineering, there's a plethora of great job opportunities overseas, but not many here.
FYI, my brother ended up working as a consultant for a small software architecture company - not related to his engineering degree in the slightest.
-

Mechatronics is my wife, but I'm having an affair with Electrical. Civil Engineering is my child. I'm at a crossroads...

Thanks for the insight. When did he graduate?
-
ok then i would say go with your wife cause if you leave your wife you might feel guilt lingering at the back of your head but its up to you
and usually i have this thing where your first gut reaction (your wife) is usually right

He graduated in 2006. Mechatronics was really new back when he did it, needed 98+ ATAR to do it. The min. ATAR has dropped since then because Mechatronics graduates aren't that employable in Australia, so fewer kids with really high ATARs wanted to do it. Also, over half of the people taking the course dropped out...it was quite hardcore back then.

Math Major @ uom. 3rd year in 2011.
-
I just transferred from Arts/Science to plain ol' Science and applied for a 12 month intermission to work and travel, so I'll be 2nd year in 2012. Hoping to major in Biochemistry and minor in Physiology :)
-
Everything looks correct to me.
2nd Year in 2011 =D
-
Same, so far. Moving into 3rd year in 2011.
-
Just finished Bachelor of Philosophy (Science) with Honours. My thesis was entitled "The Summatory Function of Liouville's Function and Polya's Conjecture". Highly exciting stuff.
-
ok so basically u did something similar to /0 in undergrad
so u did three years of Phb science major in pure maths and then u finished ur honours in pure maths?
-
I was wondering, where does a scientist work? and is it fun stuff
and does it take long to actually become a proper scientist
-
u can work at uni doing lecturing/pracs/lab research work
or you can go into a research institute
or u can work in industry
work in government
probably a few others i missed...
proper scientist? well if u want to become head of lab or something ull need phd...so that would take all up 7.5-8 years
-
ok so basically u did something similar to /0 in undergrad

Lol yeah, I was the first of all the VNers to go to ANU. Same degree as /0 - four years including honours (the honours year is a guaranteed part of the degree). You don't actually have to major in anything (in fact my transcript doesn't have a major written on it), you just have to do enough courses of one discipline so that you can do honours in it. But yeah, it's all been pure maths - I did some physics courses and stuff in first year, but every subject after that was maths.
-
oh ok got ya
how was honours? hard?
-
Not that I should say it, but I actually found honours not too bad. Mind you, I found my thesis topic really interesting, which meant I did heaps of research on it at the beginning of the year and had heaps written up after a couple of months, whereas a lot of people don't knuckle down til the last month or two and get uberstressed.
That being said, some of the coursework was a bitch, but that was because they were mostly crazy special topics that even the academic staff were new to. It's very disturbing when the "student" taking notes in front of you in class is your lecturer in another class.
-

lol uberhard
ah ok ur probably one of the few lol then again ur really smart and motivated and u paced urself well
was ur supervisor awesome, helped alot?
-
Hmmm yeah, my honours year was pretty much the opposite of yr12 in that this time round, I actually worked reasonably hard and ahead of time. Again, it was basically just because I actually found my topic pretty stimulating - I did get bogged down at times when I had to write up the uninteresting bits.
And hah, my supervisor was pretty good, but not because he helped a lot. In fact he didn't want to take me on at first because he only knows bits and pieces about my topic (no one in Australia really does analytic number theory, unfortunately), so he gave me a question to work on that he thought I should be able to solve, but warned me at the beginning that he didn't know that much about it. Turns out it isn't really possible to solve the problem the way he expected, but I still managed to write up lots of stuff about why it wasn't possible, so it was all good. And after working on that thesis for a year, I can definitely say I know a lot more about that topic than my supervisor does...
-
ah awesome congratz on finishing what u doing next?
-
Math Major @ uom. 3rd year in 2011.
What area Maths is it in? Pure? Applied?
-
I was wondering, where does a scientist work? and is it fun stuff

It depends on the field. In chemistry you can work as a chemistry academic in a laboratory as a technician, a research scientist or a analytical chemist. Physicists I think have fewer "professional" jobs in lab work but most physicists have the analytical skills to go into banking or other professional fields of that kind.
To become a professional scientist takes atleast 7 years!!! :S depending on how I go down the track, I may do some work after masters depending on whether I can do another 3-4 years of study. Although with a PhD your getting close to working as an academic which is my dream career.

Lol!
I'm looking forward to masters.
-
ah awesome congratz on finishing what u doing next?
Currently doing a summer research scholarship at ANU (as are Ahmad and mark_alec), then onto PhD next year.
-
Math Major @ uom. 3rd year in 2011.
What area Maths is it in? Pure? Applied?
Pure, I was also considering Discrete Math and OP. After one semester of OP i realised I don't like that but I have always been a big fan of discrete math. I guess I just like the intersection between pure math and discrete math. So I will be doing mostly pure math with some discrete math.
-
science/law
major in genetics and molecular bio, minors in ecology and conservation bio; and zoology
-
yep^
also can you post the year 1st, 2nd or 3rd
but i just put u in 2nd^
-
2nd year (in 2011) Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Human Structure and Function :)
-
3rd year
Edmund - Bachelor of Science (@ Melbourne): Anatomy and Physiology majors
-
3rd year
Edmund - Bachelor of Science (@ Melbourne): Anatomy and Physiology majors
How's that going by the way mate? Any decision on a future path/career?
-
I will *probably* be doing science next year.
-
cool just update when you get the offers
do you know what you want to do with science?
-
^ Already got an offer from ANU, and the offers shouldn't be a problem... I hope. I'm not sure what I want to do - I'm considering physics, biochemistry, physical chemistry... and also science communication.
-
i see, well if you accept it just reply again.
interesting selection. goodluck
-
Oh I should probably mention I'm also doing a minor in Mathematical Statistics. This way everyone can see the extreme amount of maths I'm doing =)
-

haha same, but statistics is such a diluted version of mathematics -_- at least it's the only "mathematical" minor haha

I took a statistics course in semester 2 - it was one of the most horrific experience i've ever put myself through. Fortunately 50% of the exam was mathematics so from an assessment viewpoint it was tolerable.
(doing BSc @ UoM majoring in pure mathematics)
-
what year? 3rd?
-
Update:
Gloamglozer - Bachelor of Science (@ Melbourne): Mathematics & Statistics
2nd year.
Thanks Truelight for alerting me to this.
-
Update:
dekoyl - Bachelor of Engineering (@ Monash)
-
Bachelor of Science.. monash

Update:
dekoyl - Bachelor of Engineering (@ Monash)
ah ok so you changed out of BSc, ill take you off the list

what year? why do you have biomed monash 2011? i think it will be better if the 1st years wait until offers arrive
Im applying for Irregular offer since I had biomed as my first preference. I called them and the admissions lady said the Dean approved my irregular offer as long as I apply for one on the 17th... so Im sure im in

Oh, so you're doing regular science instead of biomed? Any particular reason why? Was it the structure of it, i didn't really like that either. (Any idea what subjects youre doing? we might wind up in a lot of the same classes)
Also, i'm most likely doing monash science, so add me to the list.
-
Just to let people know ill be gone until end of January so ill update the list when i get back. Goodluck to everyone regarding their offers. Ciao off to GC
-
Back. All the first year students doing BSc update here! congratz on the offers.
-
PhB at ANU.

At Monash, some astrophysics subjects can count towards your Maths major :) It's why I'm doing one 3rd year astro subject this year :)
-
Double Degree @ Monash here.
Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering / Bachelor of Science majoring in Maths and Astrophysics.
First year this year
-
double degree - bachelor of aerospace engineering/science majoring in pure/maths (haven't decided) and physics
