Post by: Mao on December 25, 2009, 01:11:47 am

Following Name Our Company, we have finally decided on the name XLL Academy. Hence, the winner is EvangelionZeta :) Congratulations to him, and thank you all very much for your valued inputs, your efforts are well appreciated.

Watch this space, we will shortly be updating with more detailed information. :) For now, here's basically the same information from the previous thread.

enwiabe and myself are now heavily involved in the running of XLL Academy, a VCE Tuition service situated at the heart of the CBD, right next to Flinders Street Station. We'll be offering week-by-week tuition in small classes at affordable prices, brought to you by the names you trust from VCENotes. This won't be TSFX, this won't be NEAP, this will be a programme designed by students for the students. We will communicate to you as a fellow student, as a friend, not a teacher. We will focus on your understanding, not what your testimonial is going to be. We will provide you notes that you can share so everyone can benefit. We will help you achieve your best, not your money's worth. Classes will be starting in semester one 2010.

If you're interested, post below in this thread that you want to be contacted by us and we'll PM you when the programs are finalised with information on starting times and prices etc.

Currently offered subjects:
- Chemistry Units 3 and 4
- Physics Units 3 and 4
- Specialist Mathematics Units 3 and 4
- Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4

Monash University BEng(Chem)/BSc with Scholarship, course average 95
  Tuition testimonials: http://vcenotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,7965.0.html

- Daniel Levy [enwiabe], graduate of '07, ENTER:99.45 [SM - 44, MM - 44, UMEP Mathematics - 5.5 (H1)]

-whistle-  Looks hella promising at this stage.  Wish I was good enough at the offered subjects/actually DID the offered subjects to teach classes.  :p

Also, in regards to the prize for naming, I'm probably not going to need it, but would it be ok if I "saved" it and gave it to a friend or something?  ^^;

I have to say I AdBlocked the banner though.
Did you AdBlock the banner because it wasn't as aesthetically pleasing as you'd like it to be, or was it because you weren't given the opportunity to work with them? :P

Anyway, I've already told TT and Mao how awesome they are for doing this and I hope I'm welcomed to drop by some time to check the centre out. :D

It looks disgusting. I PM'd Mao about it but got a reply from enwiabe saying they don't want me.

Regardless, I hope it does well.

Oh wow, thanks guys for the support, as always, this community has never failed to amaze me at how awesome it is.

The number of interests so far is exceeding my expectations, I will discuss with administration and see if we can open a few time-slots to cater for as much as possible.

Also, nice work to doboman for knocking up a banner on Christmas Day that looks a lot better than our 2-minutes-in-paint banner hastily created on Christmas Eve.

Lastly (that I can think of), to EvangelionZeta, I shall pm you our decision tomorrow :)

Again, thank you everyone, Merry Christmas. :)

Btw, will the location be easy to see just outside Flinders?

Also, are you considering English or is it too much of a hassle because of all the different texts and contexts?

lols put discounts based on the VCEnotes karma system, every 100 karma = 10% discount =P jokes lols people with a 1000 karma = 100% discount then =P or maybe every 1000 posts = 10% discount, might encourage more people to go on VN and contribute or it might do the opposite and cause major spamming =P

There should be something for the frequent members/users of VN, over the duration of 1 Year+.
(I.E Some sort of benifet to those that have been on VN for atleast 1 Yr...)

[Take as suggestion only]

Unfortunately XLL Academy is a separate entity to VN due to a different ownership, so it is very unlikely we can give any discounts to VN users :P sorry

The name was chosen because it was neutral and it could be interpreted in many ways. It can be thought of as the initials of our surnames, or eXceL Learning, eXtra Large Lobster, eXtremeLy Ludicrous, etc...

And for now, English won't be part of our subjects because of different text choices and contexts, but we may look into running a few week workshop for the Language Analysis section.

:)

XLL can also stand for Xtra Long 'n Large, a good name if u decide to venture into the adult industry.

But yeah, this new company sounds very promising, bringing together the best in the business and will no doubt be a success :)

imo, the best logo is very clean, simple yet stands out, ie it sticks to one colour scheme and uses basic patters or shapes

Yep. Vectoring it has other benefits as well such as when you need to go off and scale it larger for a poster or something. But either way, vector art is just plain cool.

From a marketing point of view, I think he has a point (not about that exact colour scheme, but some colour would be nice). You're trying to sell the whole 'students teaching students' kind of thing here, so going for either your current one, or even GerrySly's logo feels a bit strange given the whole corporate feel surrounding them. And I'm not saying that you guys are any less of a tutor than other teachers etc., but it's just that professionalism doesn't really necessarily equate to strict formality. Have a look at TSFX/NEAP's advertising.

EDIT: Oh, and for emphasis; VECTORSVECTORSVECTORS!
Title: Re: XLL Academy

Not that these are very good, but I like the simplicity and it is something you may want to build on.  I also prefer "students tutoring students"  because it gives a really good impression of what your company is about.

It also has to look professional otherwise people, mainly parents, won't buy it.
Title: Re: XLL Academy
Post by: *ryan777* on January 04, 2010, 05:48:31 pm
i agree "students tutoring students" sounds better, but if your trying to sell to parents it may not sound that professional
labeling the tutorers as students may have unwanted connotations ie they arent any better than my child, they dont know how to teach "properly"
i know XLL is gonna be great, but just trying to think from the parents point of view

I don't think it matters. Heaps of companies have random acronyms where most people don't even know what they stand for (who here actually knows what NEAP stands for?), or that it was an acronym in the first place. When it comes to branding, the name itself rarely matters much. It's how you present the brand name itself. Once/if these guys get a website up, they can just explain it in a 'about us' section or something.

Having Xu, Levy, Liu faded lightly somewhere on the logo (bottom of slogan maybe) would be nice.

I don't think it's necessary. There's tutors other than just those 3, and seems like more of an ego boost for them than anything. Plus, it would make the logo too hectic. Simple is always better.

That would mean the title is meaningless

Brand names don't need a meaning. Marketing isn't a simple game of making the wittiest company name. And as others have said, simply explaining it in an 'about us' page will do fine, but I doubt many people will actually care. Would knowing how the company name was derived make you any more inclined to go to their tuition? Brand names can be seen really just as a catalyst for recalling the image that the company represents.

i agree
example: i have no idea what Neap stands for (if it stands for anything) or any of those companies actually...
All that needs to happen for the name to be successful is for people to associate the name with what the company does.

Thank you everyone for your inputs, your suggestions are currently being considered. But due to limited resources, time and skills, this is the best I can come up with so far.

In response to an explanation to our name "XLL Academy", this name was chosen such that it doesn't really have a set meaning, and can have many interpretations.

In response to the logo, XLL Academy will have an International aim as well, we are currently looking into the potential market for overseas Chinese students, and will most probably be offering bilingual classes (English and Mandarin). Due to cultural paradigms, the slogan was changed to attract students from both backgrounds.

And to all prospective students, we will soon be releasing details on classes, and enrolment will be open soon. There will be limited spaces available (one of our primary goal is personal interaction, hence we promise to maintain a small class size), so watch this space when the announcements arrive.

:)

Mao, on behalf of the XLL Academy team

PS - NEAP stands for "National Education Advancement Programs"

Also, acknowledgements to all those who have put in the effort to design us a logo, and those who gave feedback on our ongoing efforts in failing to design a good logo. Keep the good ideas coming, thank you guys, you mean a lot to us =]

Attached below is the .png I used which contains the vector path (I use Fireworks CS3). For Photoshop users, I have also included .psd
Please feel free to add your colouring in :)

Why not get a graphic designer to create you a logo! It's really not that expensive and it would look loads better than what's been churned up here. Unless someone here happened to be rather creative and good with logos all the suggestions (and the current banner) are gonna keep looking like shit.

I agree.  It will be $200 to $300 well spent.  Plus you wan't a logo that prints nicely on notes and business cards.
I also think you should offer English tutoring, because to put it bluntly, success in VCE depends greatly on success in English.

Ideally,  yes that would be the case.  You, I and most other VN'ers know that this is going to be a top notch tuition service.  However the fact is that for most, their parents pay for their tutors, and they don't know how great the VN community is.

I get the feel that most parents would get cold feet if they found out that XLL Acedemy started out as an internet forum and saw a rather cheap looking logo.  They would probably think it is a scam or something.  Don't forget that you are competing with the likes of TSFX and TSFM.  It HAS to be professional.

Why don't you change your x to a and make the key a simple line. Also make your 'unlock your potential' smaller so the focus is on the logo. Less is more for logo's.

A slightly more bolded font would be better in your version. It still looks a bit like a default font Paint job. And while the reflection does look good in DT's original, sticking strictly to vector is always best for logos for reasons explained before.

It looks great, but VU could have a copyright case against you (where's ninwa when you need her? She would have an idea about copyright law).

The logo looks awesome.

Not anymore

I just had an awesome idea for a moving graphic. Pity ive no idea how to make it.

I can try to explain.
Starts blank.
From right to left the box moves across leaving the XLL ACADEMY text behind it.
The Box does a merry dance on its axis.
The box comes to a stop.
As soon as it stops Unlocking your potential fades in from the left, starting at the box, to its current position.
And it looks the same as the orange one a few posts up when it finishes. ;)
Before fading out to white and restarting again.

Now someone make that and replace that horrid low quality image with the key thats up advertising XLL now.

The book also looks a bit like a box, which I guess is ever better because the logo also works if it is a box.

www.xcellacademy.com <----- ummm kinda similair name to this one... lol  but this is in the states so not to worry. I dont know how, but you need to make it so that when someone googles 'Tuition' , 'Melbourne Tuition', Maths Tuition...etcc that it comes up on the first page. most ppl dont even bother clicking on the second page of google.

We're now offering instalment payment plans. Also, if you don't want to commit to all 17 lessons, but just want to have a few here and there, individual lessons will be charged at $25 per 90 minute session (as opposed to $20 per session in the package deal). The class size limit is 10, but we will notify you if class sizes approach this number (they are not currently). Booking the full semester package is the only way to secure a place.

Aww man really? I thought this had a heap of potential with all the brilliant tutors involved. Perhaps you just needed to advertise more aggressively...

They need to advertise outside of VN as well.. Most people here thought they were too good for it / couldn't be bothered to come..

And lol, I thought they made some kind of announcement. This thing didn't even get off the ground. There were only 2 lessons for a few subjects, some didn't even start at all.

2 lessons and it closed? wow. wasn't a building rented in the city as well? that would of cost a lot and if so little students turned up...
