Title: Oral/Issues SAC 2010
Post by: fossil on January 12, 2010, 04:41:48 am
Hi guys

I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for an issue to discuss in the oral sac. At the moment im looking at the aversion of brutal force by police by the imploentation of tazers. Can other people please add some others, im not sure if my one is relevant enough at the moment.

cheers

Look up the cultural/linguistic meaning of a 'white elephant' and then you'll understand. :D

EDIT: Ok, it basically means something that costs a lot to make or maintain, but has little advantages. In Indian/Burmese culture, it was a symbol of status and a religious blessing to own (or be given) a white elephant. However, it cost a ridiculous amount of money to keep and maintain, so it was often both a blessing and a curse.

Not that I'm someone who knows a lot about Indian culture... :D

i was thinking about doing something about the Copenhagen summit, and how it failed to achieve anything significant for the developing nations. And how it major polluting nations (US, China) are failing to take responsibility. But i think that many ppl will do that, or something in a similar vain.

Internet Censorship, get a good grade while spreading the news of a near unheard of subject. (Be careful, if you are over passionate you may take...a long time. Last year I done my oral on the censorship and ended up going over 25 minutes. Despite taking twice the time I still got full marks (partially why my English teacher wanted me to stay in English while doing Lit).

Well Year 12 English for me was in 2009. But at my school we were made to do our Oral SAC at the end of 2008 so the issue will obviously not apply for any of you guys at this point in time. But I think this will give you an idea as to how I set out my Oral.   :)

yea we got to chose but it had to be about an issue in the media so we got a very broad topic.

I did a speech on "Why police should be issued with tazer guns" for Year 11 English.  I can upload it if you want.  It seems quite relevant to what you are thinking of doing.

Would also just like to add that I believe the best oral presentations (at VCE level anyway) are ones discussing mortality of some sort.  It gets the attention of the audience, and is very hard to argue against.

I remember at school this year a girl did her talk something to do with wind farms.  No one really payed attention and tbh it was the most boring 4 minutes and 28 seconds of my life.  All the ones regarding street violence and the like were all very interesting and got the best grades.

Edit:  Have to agree with ZC though, let all the guys know that soon enough they will no longer be able to access porn on their home internet connection and I am sure they will feel quite passionately about the issue of internet censorship in AUstralia. :P

Strangely enough I got more of a worried concern from the girls in my class lol. (Then again there were only 5 or so guys in my class last year.)

We have to do it on Asylum seekers.

Glad we don't have a choice, else I'd be deciding until the last minute!

My school doesn't have an oral SAC for issues. For the issues SAC we write a language analysis and a persuasive and are given a choice from two issues (each with two written pieces and one image).

And I guess, the myschool website and stuff about a "league table" for schools could be a possible issue.

How about Climate Change and how people need to be more aware of the seriousness of it and the urgency to take action?

Be more interesting and speak as a non-believer of Climate Change.

We get to do either an issue of our choice or discuss a theme from our text Cosi for our oral.
I'll be doing an issue haha.  I love to argue my point!

I've got to do an oral aswell, can't think of anything that would be interesting enough to secure that full mark.. Was thinking, 'Should VCE English be compulsory', but don't think the english teacher would like where i'd go with that.. plus it isn't really an issue.. well for other than year 12s

i ended up doing my oral sac yesterday on the topic "harsher but fairer penalties must be introduced in Australia for corporate crimes".
it was good because i used the examples of VISY and James Hardie to really lay down the effects of the issue and get the audience involved. i then followed up with what should be done and quoted examples in Europe. It went down well because i get to really have a rage at a few things but also cover all the relevant things to get content marks such as how to change it etc and the arguements against it so it wasn't one sided. It also involved a bit of mortality stuff (james hardie), so that really tugged at a few heartstrings.

i'm practically screwed for this Oral/Issue topic, cannot think of one, well one that is different from everything else in the classroom, either people are doing; "Whether the FIFA world cup or AFL should be held in melbourne" or "Indian racism".. anyone got any ideas of an issue which occurred post September last year?
