Title: Enrolment day vs information session?
Post by: jejak on January 19, 2010, 02:35:44 pm
At the risk of sounding like a complete moron, the compulsory faculty information sessions are supposed to be on a different day to enrolment day itself, right? Mao's post led me to think that's the case, at least  :knuppel2: According to my offer letter off the VTAC site, my enrolment date is on the 28th of Jan, 09.30 till 11.00,
but the law faculty site says the information session is at the same time. Am I missing something?

Also, am I correct in thinking that students have to select their units in WES before attending information sessions? Can these be changed on the basis of the information we receive?

Not necessarily, they can be on the same day. They were for me (though I didn't actually go to the sessions)

I'm not sure about selecting units for other disciplines but you don't really have much choice in law, you're pretty much locked into LAW1101, LAW1104, LAW2201 and LAW2202

Thanks for the info, ninwa. Good to know that I can bail on the sessions if necessary!

Okay, fair enough. But what about for Arts? For languages, I understand that there's some kind of placement exam if you're not studying the language ab initio. How can I select the correct units in WES without this information? *hyperventilates*

So you don't have to go even though it says "compulsory course information session" ?

I didn't, but due to circumstances out of my control. I would still recommend that you go, even if you leave after 5 minutes, just to see if you can glean any useful information - first year is confusing enough without deliberately eschewing information.

RE: languages - I got an email about placement tests around mid February. I actually didn't do the test either lol because I was interstate, so I got automatically shoved into level 5 German (the "default" starting level for VCE students, unless you are really bad, in which case you can argue for entry into level 3 - though some people do that to get an easy ride - but I wouldn't recommend it because you'll be bored out of your mind).

Have you tried enrolling first? I think I got that email because I'd enrolled in German. I don't know whether you want to do Indo or Chinese but here are the course codes you can put down for the time being:
INM1050 (Indonesian level 5) -> see http://monash.edu.au/pubs/2010handbooks/aos/arts-ug-indonesian.html for more info.
CHI1050 (Chinese level 5) -> see http://monash.edu.au/pubs/2010handbooks/aos/arts-ug-chinese-language.html (or http://monash.edu.au/pubs/2010handbooks/aos/arts-ug-chinese-translation.html if you are very good at Chinese and want to do translation units)

INM1030 = level 3, INM1070 = level 7
CHI1030 = level 3, CHI1070 = level 7

I didn't go but I'm still in. However I would strongly recommend that you do go, unless you really really can't make it.

Given how reliant I am on the good folk of VN, I agree that deliberately eschewing possible help would be unwise.

Ahhh I see. I was wondering how that would work. Thanks for the info. I don't think WES is operational for Arts subjects selection until the 22nd, but I will enrol then. I got a 47 for Indo so I'm assuming I would start at level 5 Indo subjects then.

Quick question - sorry to keep nagging! - do you know how I can enrol in the diploma of languages? I'm assuming subjects are selected in the same way?

Lulz. I only scraped a 37, and bear in mind my teacher said the oral examiners probably graded me leniently, as I'm whiter than Paris Hilton. Thanks for the info tho.

Oh, thanks so much! Embarrassed to say it, but I really wasn't getting the numbering system.

I'm not even in the state; but I've got to go back to hand in credit forms. I might as well go anyway. Might be helpful.

EDIT: Sorry for hijacking your thread jejak. I didn't see the point in creating a new thread for information sessions though ^_^

Yes, you'd probably go into level 5, since you've done VCE.
... unless you have gone on exchange etc. and are therefore close-ish to fluent - then you might start at level 7. The placement test will determine that, anyway.
Level 9 entry is for fluent/native students.
(I'm basing this off my experiences in German and French btw, Indo might be slightly different, you should email the course coordinator just in case)

Re: diploma of languages, you'll have to ask Fyrefly who is doing one and will know more about it than me :)

3 Questions

1. How long does an information session normally last for?

2. If you're doing a double degree, do you have to attend one for each degree or is there a joint one?

3. I was shown "http://www.buseco.monash.edu.au/student/learning/orientation/index.html" ( I didn't get a Monash info package :S ). Is there one for Engineering? Would I only need to attend 1 of them?

On Q2, I know that for degrees like Law, they have individual compulsory information sessions for, say, Arts/Law or Comm/Law specifically; but I think these don't really cover much info on the Arts or Comm side, as the enrolment letter suggests that you go to the (e.g.) Arts one too.

Of course I stand to be corrected here haha.

I haven't received a thing either. Does anyone know when I can find a timetable for commerce information sessions? Apparently I've already missed one...

I haven't received a pack either (science/law). Didn't even know they existed :S

I used the info in the handbooks etc to enrol in subjects already. Was I supposed to do that? If I need to change them after the info sesh on the 28th can I?

You can change your classes [without academic penalty?] up until the census date which is the 30th of march I believe.
