Title: The Age VCE and Careers Expo 2010
Post by: the.watchman on February 14, 2010, 02:12:57 pm
Hey guys, I was wondering if this expo is worth going to.
My school gave me a free ticket, so I was thinking of going on maybe the Sunday.
Does anyone recall if any particular seminars were interesting?

Any help is greatly appreciated :P

This expo basically has little to do with VCE. It's more about companies wanting to recruit people to work for them. The only benefit is you get some free stuff and if the army is there, go and talk to them and they might teach you how to use their weapons. Twas the highlight of my visit

Yeah, the seminars aren't really worth it.  They are just there to sell you something.  It's better to go and swag the freebies there and if you need to buy some books or other educational stuff, most of the things there will be on special.

Also, if you have any questions about uni courses, the universities will have their own stalls as well.

Oh ok thanks guys, I probably won't spend long there then :P
But yeah, I guess I'll hoard some freebies and grab some Undergrad course guides

This sounds good, yay for freebies and seminars! :)
How much of a discount do you normally get for textbooks/study guides in this expo?

It varies from book to book but usually it's significant savings.  Also, if you're planning to buy study guides, I would go for Unit 4 ones because the expo is so close to exams that you would want to start doing practice exams then.

Lol ok, but I think it will be VERY crowded there. Yeah, I'll probably drop in Sat afternoon too after chinese school to see if there's anything good to buy, if there is, I'll bring a few thousand bucks the next day and buy 50,000 books/studyguides :)

they're so fkn gay every time i go in there they try and sell me the whole damn store...
and they obviously think they are doing me a favour by giving me these gay tickets when in fact all they do is take up more room on my desk which is already laden with piles of crap!

edit: should snail mail them to anna, she likes free stuff :P

SUNDAY

What is the other university approved by the Institute of Actuaries Australia apart from UniMelb, Macq, ANU and UNSW? The only approved uni in Melbourne is Melbourne Uni though... why is everything in Sydney??

I'm not sure how useful they will be :)

I'm not sure how useful they will be :)

It'll mostly be an info session as advertised.  Take NEAP Chemistry as an example.  For the first 5-10 minutes or so, they'll tell you "trivial stuff" like how is assessment is broken up, what the exam is, etc.  Then they'll talk about chemistry.  The level will be relatively easy and if you are a capable student, you might end up leaving the presentation.  I remember a few people left here and there so if you do feel the need to leave, don't worry.

Also, if you want a seat, you might want to get there early because the seats tend to be taken pretty fast.

In 2008 and 2009 when I went, they weren't actually rooms.  It was in the grandstand and they had these barriers separating the presentations so they look like a "room".  But you'll find that some presenters can be quite loud and you might be able to hear the person from the next "room".  Don't worry though, it's not as bad as I've described.  You'll enjoy it.

It's also pretty good because there are so many university representatives there, they can answer many questions.

The only reason she didn't get a re-entry ticket is because she went on the last day. If you attend either Friday or Saturday you will receive a coupon for re-entry.

That's why I said she should have went on Saturday.  Or even Friday if you don't have school or want to wag school.  Double the experience for 0 the cost if you're eager.

Yeah, I'm going to go to that one too - basically whole day Sunday. I might come on Saturday afternoon too if I'm not too busy (since Monday's off) - most of my ATs finish this week :) I want to come on Friday too but there's House Athletics which is "compulsory".

Yeah, for one hour with school.
We just had house aths today, my school doesn't go... how was it?

I was only there for an hour, so I didn't go to any seminars; but I did walk around all the stands. They would be quite good if you had questions you want to ask; all the universities and colleges have representatives at their stand. Some had faculty specific representatives also. ANU had a lady for science. I'm not sure about commercey stuff; but Uni Melb had a very big stall and many people to speak with.

There were also lots of books and guides on sale, like checkpoints, A+, NEAP etc.

If you have a plan and want to talk to uni representatives or attend seminars, it should be good.

It got boring very quick for me because it only took 30 mins to walk through, and there wasn't anything else I could do.

Haha that's what I'm planning to do (apart from checkpoints, which I have for every subject already, apart from physics and speSh)
I bought exam busters off a previous student for specialist, and I haven't really looked through it yet, but will probably use it in a year's time.
Are there any other good study guides out there? What do you suggest for english language? Living Lingo? Insight?

I got A+ Methods, haven't really looked at it in great detail yet, but IMO, it is fair average, too basic, and just goes over crap you really should know.

The Biology one is quite good though. :)

Every time I go near Academic & General or the Senior Student Resource Centre (where they try and sell you bloody everything in the store), I always end up buying something. :(

Still tossing up on checkpoints, I mean gosh, the questions are available for free on the net from VCAA, do I really need to pay $25 for them???

It's only because I go to school in the city haha.

http://www.ssrc.com.au/

the guy standing in the the door is so fucking annoying.  he literally doesn't shutup about how great each and every one one of their damn products is!

http://www.academicbooks.com.au/contact.html

and nah, no good deals, both your usual rip offs.
A&G sometimes gives you a 5% discount on new books, after making the price of the book 5% more than what it normally costs.  bastards!

Still tossing up on checkpoints, I mean gosh, the questions are available for free on the net from VCAA, do I really need to pay $25 for them???

Well it's there if you want the VCAA questions organized into topics

So I can go buy absolutely everything there, which is what I intend to do (if there are good deals and resources) :D Need to get prepared for the next 2 years - just arming myself with 500 textbooks/study guides/etc. so I have resources.

Wont they be outdated in 2 years time though? :/

It varies subject by subject.  It depends on when the current study designs end.

True, even still, sometimes the study design doesn't change much.

Previously yes, but if the national curriculum is going ahead, then I would imagine there would be quite a bit of change to make all the states and territories align with each other.

Fair enough, yeah, I decided not to buy anything - my bag was already filled with 11kg of past papers and most of all, course guides for uni. Expo was massive, there was like a sea of people and all the seminars I went to were full ;)
How do you know when the study designs for each subject end - do they give you any warning?

Lol I came in with my massive school bag, it only had my english text in it... but ended up filling the whole thing - came home and weighed it, and my bag was 11kg. I think that's the heaviest my school bag's been (I don't take my laptop home). University course guides weigh way too much lol I think I'm gonna have a sore shoulder for the rest of the week. ;)

oh sadly not as much freebies as last year D:
What did you get last year? This year there were VCAA past papers, Neap drink bottles, course guides, notes from the expo lectures from neap... not a lot of random freebies really lol

LOL yeah stole tons of vcaa exam papers, all these random uni course stuff, and pens and shit haha

But yeah weren't that many decent stuff, lectures weren't that great i reckon, only neap gave notes. The only good one was probably that vce success one.

Higlight of my day - After being lectured at some stand, Me: "Can i have a pen?", Lady: "You just wanted the pen didn't you?" ROFL

I got all of the stoich stuff, most of the organic, and some of the mass spectroscopy :)
Although I did walk out with like five minutes to go (thinking that I needed to get a good seat at the methods one...)

The website doesn't have an actual catalogue that works on it. Can we just visit the actual store and buy stuff without ordering?
