Post by: lachymm on March 27, 2010, 05:07:56 pm
Hey guys, how do you ensure you get a really good mark in your oral presentation?
What are the markers looking for?
How do i get confidence and come across passionate about my subject?

Anything else would be of a great help (Any sites or pdf documents), thanks guys.

1. Dont use cue cards.
2. Relax. Enjoy the presentation. Dont look so terrified. I got 28/30 if it helps

I usually get A+ for orals. Your body language is actually as important as the content of your speech. I practised for two days before the actual Oral last year.

Also, try to create a stunning intro (provided its appropriate), smile when necessary, use props if possible. I personally tend to avoid using powerpoints because my school didn't have user friendly projectors in our classrooms and it may cause a lot of trouble, you could use it though

Examples of "stunning intros"?

Like yelling some word at the top of your voice?
You mean something that grabs the audiences attention and seperates you from the rest yeah?

National anthem in background with aussie flag waving while talking proudly in overly patriotic tone about democracy, only for the song to be cut, a picture of commy Rudd cutting in and you saying "democracy...Well I have bad news for you...it is not"...it worked for me :P

If you have a powerpoint presentation, dont start with the presentation. First have a bit of your introduction on what you are going to talk about in a very friendly easy tone and to end use the phrase "so sit back, relax and enjoy!" /start presentation .

:D

You are not there to make the kids relax, your there to anger, enrage , manipulate - ahem, I mean persuade :P

Or at least dazzle your teacher intro submission...

Seriously thought, humour is good, makes the whole thing more fun.

I decided to re-write mine entirely the day before so I finished it at around 5pm. I freaked out and read it approximately 984034 times. It was great because I ended up memorising it and I looked at my speech (woo, we use music stands so I could wave my arms around hysterically) around once. My teacher thought that I did lots of preparation and mentioned it to the other class.

I always memorise it, the point of an oral is to Present your point, so the less reading-it-out you do, the better. Cue cards are there to Remind you, its a way to fail-proof, but the less you look at it, the better. Normally I just hold the cards in my left hand and treat them like accessories.

I memorised my whole oral, didn't need palm cards or a speech, basically just had points which I was going to bring up and spoke about them :P (this is along with a powerpoint though). I'd strongly advice to use minimal notes/typed up speeches/palm cards, as this then shows the marker that you understand the topic, and are simply not just reading off palm cards.

If it persuades you, I was the only student out of 160-odd to get full marks because of it. That and I had a kick-ass slide-show :P

Lol good work! Hmm I'm going to dress up for my oral, and that will be my non-verbal prop :P

Yeah, I'm serious. And I went for 12.5 minutes ;D

I would recommend a little more preparation though, I was "umming and ahhing" quite a bit.

I had already been thinking about the issue prior to actually writing out my powerpoint, I also found a springboard in some discussion here. Also I found some great papers and articles on the subject, which reduced my need for research dramatically.

Anyway, you should definitely start preparing and thinking now. And possibly make a general schedule for your discussion. The key is thinking, if the issue, and your viewpoint, is clear in your mind, your speech will work out well. If not, then you are screwed...
