Title: what does 'wretched beyond the wretchedness of mere Humanity' mean?

would anyone be able to help me understand this statement:

'wretched beyond the wretchedness of mere Humanity'

humanity = wretched
whatever that sentence is referring to = more wretched than normal.

So, very wretched in a world that is otherwise mildly wretched. Wretched also means something in between bad and evil.
