If anyone'd been to their workshop/previous VCE lectures (esp. bio), please comment on this program.
Effective? Worth the price? Rather go somewhere else? Anything :D
I'm tossed between attending Biology revision lecture at TSFX or NEAP.
The thought of choosing NEAP just popped in my head now since I already have some unit 3 materials from TSFX..
I haven't hear a lot about NEAP except the fact that they're very challenging.
So umm, yeah. Thoughts and comments would be awesome (on either programs) :)
It'll help me and others out there who are considering the same thing as I am.
Cheers!

Hmm well my Spesh teacher said this: "The point of these revision lectures is to cram, and the worst way to cram is to have someone else do it for you instead of you finding out where your weakpoints are."

Thats exactly what my belief is!!! and exactly what I say ! OMG
Anyways...yes, look the lectures are like 2 - 3 weeks before the real deal..and if youre not ready by then..
theres little you can do really.
-
That doesn't answer my question but yeah thanks for that. My teacher said similar thing along the line of identifying and improve on your weak points.
I just think revision lectures as another way to get answers to any queries/problems you have.
Since it's around two weeks before the exam, people would have done sufficient revision by then anyway, hopefully.
Then there's the lecture to help you fill in the little gaps you have. I don't think it's entirely useless.
-
Same here, I don't think it's entirely useless. Even though you may know a lot of the content, there just might be something, something miniscule that you might pick up and help you for your exams :P
-
Yeah. It's always good to go through the materials again in any way possible, information is ingrained in your mind furthermore. For me anyway x)

Haha yeah exactly :P
Oh and referring to your topic, I think perhaps you should try NEAP- I haven't been before, but I've been to TSFX and they weren't that great. I guess it depends if you're lucky or not in getting a good or bad lecturer!
-
Yes. they are worth it, especially to pick up those little things that you didn't know before...even if you are an A+ student.
It's not like it's going to make you dumber or anything.

Lectures aren't always for cramming
-
well depends on how good the notes are, i went to AE for psych and the notes were fairly average but then i went to the free one at vic uni and it really helped me understand everything

crappy, is that in response to NEAP ?
The whole revision discussion confused me, don't know what people are replying to now sry :(

Yeah the lecturer is extremely important.
I went to a revision TSFX lecture before, but now looking at other alternatives.

yeahh I'm thinking of going to that free one at Vic Uni as I have all the notes from last year for psych. Wonder when they'll begin it.
EDITED: reply to new post

they all suck :P
-
I liked the TSFX Chem revision lectures
-
they all suck :P
haha You don't need revision lectures, nice
-
dont think so. i could get so much more done at home with the time those lectures take and there is no way that i can listen to the same person crap on for 6 and a half hours :O

That's how i feel about most tuition classes and tutors
-
I reckon it cant hurt to hear something explained a different way. If you have the money and the time why not, also depends on your skill in the subject and where you're at though.
-
If you are confident with the content, no need to go - especially if you think 'everyone's going so I should too'. I haven't been to any of them, but I did flick through a set of TSFX notes which didn't seem to include anything I didn't really know for Methods. I guess it might be helpful for Chem, they tend to sneak stuff in on the exam :P

Yeah thats what i like tsfx chem. They tell you things beyond the course so that you'll be ready for anything ;D
-
Yeah cos in class, we get taught straight from the textbook, there really isnt anything challenging and it's not that hard to learn by yourself since it's all in there anyway.
Tsfx, for me anyway, gives me info i wouldnt have learnt and actually challenges you as opposed to just answering questions out of the textbook where the answer is given to you and makes me sound much smarter in class xD

0.o Textbook questions can be hard, especially the ones that tell you to do research >.<

I'm going to TSFX for physics and chem, I reckon they might help.

I got the books, for the mid-year exam TSFX and NEAP (Both for 2008 - 2009).
As well, the summer school for TSFX For 2009.
All the TSFX and neap ones are exactly the same,,,just a reprint of the same stuff!
If you have any of the mentioned above, I'd recommend not going. Because, its exactly the same
stuff, word to word.
_______________________________
The Neap content, is different to TSFX..but If you have have the TSFX books, from anytime previously..dont go!
ALSO...Just a word of mention, I also have a set of the TSFX Master Classes Books (I dont go there)..but again,
whatever is in there, is identically word to word, to the mid-year lecture books.
-
NEAP seems more professional..I think

I think so too and I want to try that out .. to see how 'professional' they are. Seems like everyone prefers TSFX, well more like none goes to NEAP, ah wells.

Thanks for that naved :)

I heard these companies generally teach really general stuff?
-
They have to. Its nearly impossible to cover whole detailed unit 3 in 3hrs (for neap)
-
Nah, Neap is 4 hours
-
No i meant like, they just go over everything in the course again. Not exactly exam prep.
-
Yep. Well it IS called revision xD I think the preparation could only be done on our own tbh
-
Yeah but it should be more like exam preparation, like teaching us things to look out for or whatever.
Revision is basically looking back over stuff we've already done, so yeah that can just be done on our own.
-
Well they do sort of point out things you should look out for or include in your answers along the way while you're doing questions

I've been to some free Melborne uni lectures which focused on exam techniques, the chem teacher pretty much just hated VCAA, it wasnt hard to tell. The bio teacher knew her stuff and gave great tips for the exam, though nothing I hadn't read before. I went to a $34 biology 6.5 hour lecture which was really worth it IMO. I learn by absorbing speech and asking questions, so I make sure I keep the lecturer on their toes throughout. The notes were ok, it was worth going for a big overview!
I went to the 6.5 hour chemistry TSFX lecture, 400 pages of notes.. perhaps an overkill, but they were quite good, only problem was there was not enough time to finish the book. I couldnt finish them all after the lecture either. They are supposed to summarise the course by applying the information from all text books and combining them, but its just massive for a summary. Prior to the lecture I was advised to not make my own summaries as i would be recieving comprehensive notes at the lecture. So I did as they said and didnt summarise for myself. This was a mistake on my behalf. Making your own notes really does help you to reiterate and comprehend the course. During the lecture the lecturer kept talking and talking to the point were too much information was conveyed in too little time. She cut lunch breaks to try and fit it in. It made the lecture off putting andi got restless, she had amazing knowledge and gave great examples but there was just so much! the lecture went for an extra hour but I couldnt stay due to transport.
so in all I believe that revision lectures are really helpful but they are only a suppliment to your own extensive preperation. My biology teacher was great she held revision clases where we covered past VCAA papers once a week after school. My chemistry teacher was also really supportive with after school classes, but sadly i dont feel i went very well in chem due to nerves on the day. It is by doing past exams that you realise the trends for yourself, make sure you do them, rather than just lamenting that you have gone to a lecture.
