You could always just ask people at school, seeing as you'd have 500 VCE students there already...

Physics isn't that hard at VCE level. It's more about being careful. I can't comment on biology though.

Edit: Oh, and don't do subjects just because they're easy 50s or your school does well. I was going to drop physics at the end of year 10 because I didn't think I'd get a good mark. I took it just for kicks. It's really strange, because I did study score predictions in year 10 when I was choosing subjects, and I put 42-47 for physics as my school had done terribly, and 45-50 for english language. My scores were very different.

this is encouraging :) my prediction for physics is 40-43 and biology 43-45 but I find biology tedious and physics more interesting. suffer boredom for a better mark or enjoy physics but get a low mark? :-\

You might not get a low mark. I far exceeded my expectations from year 10, despite the fact that science was one of my best subjects at the time. Do physics if you enjoy it.

lol eng lang will become ur 7th subject or something, we'll see the 50's rolling in by the end of this year xD

Hahahah, after scaling, English Language will count if I don't get 48+ in English or bomb my other subjects (which is entirely possible). Although the 48 in English isn't as easy as it sounds...

Cmon, a scaled 47 is not bad for English Language. I'd be so happy if I got that. :D I'm pretty sure you can get a perfect study score even if you fail english (you won't, clearly though). I'm pretty sure a 47/50/50/50/5/5.5 gives you a 99.95?
Title: Re: Does anyone go to Mac.rob

Nope, it doesn't. 99.90 I think.
Title: Re: Does anyone go to Mac.rob
Post by: m@tty on May 05, 2010, 06:20:38 pm
Last year 109.1 209.1 was required for 99.95.

So you couldn't even have a 49 in your top four if you didn't have a scaled score >50.

EDIT: Wait, I knew something was wrong...

Nope, it doesn't. 99.90 I think.
But I put all my subjects in the VCE calc, and it says that I only need 45/45/45/45/45/45 to get 99.9. (did this last year) Chinese scaled to 53 last year I think.

As far as i know, its English and the next best 3 subjects. 5th and 6th lowest subject its 10% of each, so getting a high score is actually harder than you think

I do French which scales massively, but on the same token, it's impossible to do well in French.

Not if you do Spesh and Latin, enjoy them and do well in them ;) (not me)
Doesn't this make up for any sub-50s in the top 4?
Title: Re: Does anyone go to Mac.rob

It most certainly does. And plus, most .95ers don't get straight 50s. You just need 1, a high scaling subject and some 48s or 49s that scale to 49.(something high).

It really is so much fun (especially as we're translating the poetry of Catullus hehe...)

Well, Mac.Rob has an exceptional cohort this year (6 olympiad scholars, 2 team members, NMSS participants, NYSF participants, MUNA national winners...) so we should get rank 1... unless everyone gets lazy.

I still think that Mac.Rob will win over MHS any year just because of the fact that girls generally get higher average scores compared to boys. Those olympiad positions and stuff you listed just make Mac.Rob sound so much godlier ahah.

Year before last, however, MacRob > Ruyton > Melb High > Scopus

I'm pretty sure a school does not ride it's results on 10 people.

The boys and girls who get the 39s and 40s also bring up the median score, judging a school off a few of it's elite students does not say much for the entire cohort.

Though I do think MHS class of 2010 will give MacRob a good run.

Truetears, it's just friendly competition that you always get between the two schools, not cockiness.

Also MacRob tends to beat MHS every year as MHS instakes 334 students, wheras MacRob only takes in 230 or something. We have an extra 104 students generally ranked lower than any student at MacRob on the entrance exam (I know it doesn't work exactly like that, but you get my gist), so it is amazing if in any year MHS does beat MacRob :)

Similarly that's why an accelerated cohort at a school like Balwyn will generally always do better on average that both MHS and Macrob.

I assume the standard of teaching/study ethic at places like Mt. Scopus is just straight up excellent though.

This is the obligatory "MGS got a median of 93.95 last year, with 31 perfect study scores, 32 99+ ENTER scores and 7 perfect ENTERs" post.  For an almost entirely non-selective school (even if it's private), that's pretty godly (and also a massive anomaly from what we usually get...).

Of course, MacRob and MHS still beat us.  :p

Yeah MGS always gets so many (the most?) perfect ENTERs each year! :D In Scopus last year, the highest ENTER was 99.85 with 25 perfect study scores. But the average was really good: 17% of the cohort achieving ENTER scores of 99 or more, 51% achieving over 95...

I think schools like MGS attract a lot of the very top performers, but don't always have best averages. SGS is like that too... the top male students in Sydney usually apply for scholarships irrespective of their financial background.

Eh. It's too early to judge. I think there are some problems at John Monash though - it's very laissez-faire.

She meant very top, not just top.  There's a slight difference, in that the VERY top students are the James Lu-esque ones, whilst the top are just the 99+ kids.  :p

And nooo... I don't think I'll get an IPhO medal...
