Sorry, I know this question is VERY vague. I don't usually ask questions like this but ATM I have very limited knowledge on the content/opportunities gained from a Bachlor of Commerce.
Also, in terms of both education and job opportunities, is there a significant difference if I gained my B.Comm from ANU, Monash or Melbourne (provided my results were of similar standards at each institution)

Job prospects for a B.Comm graduate would be pretty good coming from any of those unis. But I'd take UoM over Monash anyday for a B.Comm. (just fyi i'm doing a B.Comm at UoM, so a bit of bias-but i think it's widely acknowledged that Commerce and UoM is better than Monash).
Job prospects really depends on your specialisation/major and the job market in that particular field at the point of your graduation. However, I think you'll find accounting is always in demand. Finance and economics prospects are pretty good aswell. Management and marketing I'm not so sure.
At UoM, core subjects include micro+macroeconomics and two statistics subjects.
-
I'm really enjoying Commerce, I think it's a very good degree.
-
monash, Uom or ANU, pretty much no difference where you go. Go to wahtever is most convinient for you, If you know specifically what major you want to do, some unis are better than others (eg. for act stud UoM=ANU>>>>>>>>>>>>Monash(conceidering next yr will be the 1st yr they offer it)) but for commerce generally, they're all pretty good unis and will get you a respected degree.
-
money wise. What do commerce grads typically get 1st year out - in all majors (accounting, economics, finance etc)
Also. What jobs can you get majoring in economics. Is it mainly advisory jobs?
-
Majoring in economics could lead you into the finance industry as they are closely related. Investments, property investments, banking etc.
Majoring in economics/finance will involve a lot of maths too.
-
(eg. for act stud UoM=ANU>>>>>>>>>>>>Monash(conceidering next yr will be the 1st yr they offer it))
is that definate? will it only be a single or double degree?
-
Management is the worst subject ever. I hate it so much. Microeconomics is interesting though I guess.
-
(eg. for act stud UoM=ANU>>>>>>>>>>>>Monash(conceidering next yr will be the 1st yr they offer it))
is that definate? will it only be a single or double degree?
TBH, i have absolutely no idea. When i asked about it at the age vce and careers expo, all i got was a "dunno.....come to open day and ask then" whihc wasn't very promising.......

For the Commerce students starting this year this year there are optional tutorials to take for those who want to do acturial studies as far as I know
EDIT: Copy and pasted from email
Dear ECC1000 or ECC1100 Student,
If you may possibly decide to follow the actuarial program within an Econometrics major over the balance of your B.Com or B.Ec degree, you should
take notice of the following!
To use ECC1000 & ECC1100, with high enough results (Av. 70%, min. 60% in each), to obtain exemption from the Institute of Actuaries subject CT7 Economics, you must attend additional tutorials (& pass a relevant test).
These tutorials cover utility theory, a topic not covered in economics lectures until 2nd year. It is, however, a necessary topic for
actuaries to become familiar with at an early stage.
On the Econometrics and Business Statistics Department (EBS) website look up the “Proposed Monash Actuarial Program Structure” page:
http://www.buseco.monash.edu.au/depts/ebs/student/undergrad/actuarial/program.php
That page of the website has a link you can use to register your interest in the additional tutorials.
The tutorials are planned to take place at over two weeks in late April, early May, and will be followed by an assessment exercise the following week.
This information originates from Graham Forbes, Senior Lecturer Actuarial in EBS Department.
Kind Regards,
Student Services
Faculty of Business and Economics

Whats the typical wage for a Commerce graduate 1st year out? Say an accountant

Whats the typical wage for a Commerce graduate 1st year out? Say an accountant
For a Big 4 firm, a graduate accountant will find their starting wage is around $35k.
This is a bit lower than mid-tier firms offer, but Big 4 usually give a pay rise of around $7k per year.
Mid-tier firms and banks usually have a starting salary of $45k, but the pay rises are much smaller.

Will the new Monash program be accredited by the IAA (and do you get exemptions from it?)

Monash Commerce is great! Especially micro economics, financial accounting and finance. EXCEPT:management (accounting).
-
I don't know what the jobs for economics are specifically, but you will always find something. Apparently, economics is one of the most employable field, but I believe investment and finance is a good chance.
In terms of what it's like, I study economics at Melbourne and I find it really good. There's a lot of support for you and the staff are all really helpful and enthusiastic. Also, I find the subject really interesting and most other people I talk to enjoy it as well. I don't know about anything else:P
-
where do economics graduates work tho?
i mean apart from being an economist (which i think is quite hard to get into) i cant see where econ grads could work....wouldn't finance and/or accounting be more employable?

There are many fields that an economist can work it in: environmental, health, government, tertiary education. But like you said, trying to get a job as an economist in Australia is very difficult, according to my tutor. He said that the economics jobs in Australia are very competitive and it's pretty hard to get a job here.
-
My economics teacher used to be a credit analyst
-
There are so many jobs/careers paths you can take with a commerce degree.
All the graduate programs to start with: BIG 4 firms, the banks, fund managers, public service etc. etc.
Or you go on and do post grad and become a teacher, or go on and do further study/research and work in academia.
Etc. etc. etc.

If you're talking about their grad program salaries than this is a little bit low. They generally pay starting salaries of around 45k +/-5k

im doing management next semester at monash is it crap as in hard or boring
it's incredibly boring, and the essays are a bitch. The readings are long and boring, the lectures suck (I've only been to a few at the start of semester though), and you can't bs too much in essays because you have to reference everything, omfg.
Worst subject ever.

You should be going to lectures.
The "potential exam Qs" that Tui occasionally gives out ARE the exam Qs almost word-for-word.
I only read two chapters all semester, and I HD'd the exam.
However, the tutor who marked my second assignment had issues and only gave me a C, so I ended up with a D overall.
My hand was fked by the end of that exam though... I had just started writing the conclusion of my 6th essay when the invigilator said "pens down", so I ended up with a one-sentence conclusion that didn't really make any sense... XD
-
wtf? 6th essay?
how long are they and how long do u get to do them?

You don't stop writing.
If you do, you're losing marks.
Simple as that.
You get 15mins reading time - unless you're stupid and would rather just sit there, this is when you mentally plan all your essays and organise your thoughts.
The only time I wasn't writing was when I was waiting a few moments for a second script book, when I had a sip of water, and when my hand cramped and I needed to stretch it for a few seconds.
There is one consolation: I should mention that I'm not a particularly fast writer... others will probably find writing copious amounts in a short amount of time to be easier than I do.
I'm strongly opposed to these sorts of exams - what do they test exactly?
It's certainly not knowledge or comprehension... there isn't enough time for students to demonstrate anything particularly insightful that would allow them to demonstrate this.

i heard from my finance tutor at UoM that generally monash provides a better commerce undergrad. he was saying it had something to do with the coupling of double degrees say for smrandom azn commerce/business information systems?(if i remember from above) provides better opportunities for grads. although...that same tutor said that postgrad at UoM is better than monash and anu due to difficulty and prestigious-ness lol overall i dont think it really matters, as long as you can add stuff to your degree (e.g. diploma in maths or languages) opportunities domestically and in foreign workplaces are higher.
-
gotta wonder why the same smrandomazn quit that degree after 1 semester :P

Try a bit more. The cadet entries get $35K+ a year
Grad entry would be more around $45K+
