Title: polysaccharides
Post by: Martoman on May 14, 2010, 12:12:47 pm
Do we need to know what makes up things like maltose and such? They are easy to remember, its just one more thing in the pile of things.

hmmmm...umm probably not? Your asking as in know which monosacs combine to form a particular polysac right? Maybe just know a few examples of mono, di and polysacs

The data booklet has the structure of sucrose in it, and we know that it is a combination of glucose and fructose. With this, we already have all the information we need to draw maltose- maltose is two glucose molecules together and since we have the glucose molecule in the sucrose molecule, we know how to draw it :D
Lol if that makes any sense..

Exactly what i was going to say ;D
From this we also know how to draw fructose(glucose+fructose = sucrose)
I doubt we would need to know much more as biomolecules isnt a widely tested area on the paper

polysaccharides are made up of mono-saccharides, and disaccharides are made up two mono-saccharides aren't they?

how about lactose? :P
on the data booklet glucose is on one  side of the surcose molecule (LHS) and then pn that same molecule u swap the end H and OH bond so that hte OH would be on top and the O at the bottom and that gives galactose so when u join these u get lactose :)

yea the di gives it away.

If you know it, why are you concerned whether you need to know it? O.o
