Title: OMG its all coming down on me ):
Post by: crayolé on May 24, 2010, 02:01:03 am
Okay, I'm in a really bad predicament, similar to kingpompba

All this week and next week is full of SACs and I havent been able to touch a trial exam for any of my two mid-years yet. :/

What do i do? If i dont try in these SAC's i'm going to lose all my rank 1's. I pretty much have SACS for every subject.
If i lose just a couple marks in bio and further my rank will drop drastically :/

Now I'm forced to pull an all nighter just to finish this english oral aha

I'm sure you can find time to study for the SACs and also for exams, and then spam the weekend! Just use all your time you have after school..
(Wish i could do this though haha)

I don't understand why every school seems to be piling on the SACs now. My school had the big SAC attack 2 weeks ago, now we're pretty much free to study for mid-years.

My school has EVERYTHING next week.
I ask the teachers why and they reply 'ask vcaa'
UM WTF teachers VCAA doesn't say when to sit your outcomes. GRRRRRR.
Like literally all my subjects....don't even get me started on psych midyear

*cries river*

Even though I have SACS for all my subjects in these next 2 weeks, I don't really think it's as bad as it looks.

~ Chem and Physics SACs I've already prepared for by revising for exams
~ English SAC is a speech that I've already written and only need to practice a little bit
~ Spesh SAC I really don't see what I can do except maybe 1-2 hours of revising theory

My school is definitely disorganized, most of the subjects that have a unit 3 exam haven't even finished the course so now its being rushed and theres still one more sac to go.

I have a Biology Assignment + Test SAC, A Chem Practical SAC, and two pieces due for English plus a written SAC, all on Context.

As kyzoo says, the SAC's for the mid year subjects aren't that bad.  You should already be prepped for them by having revised for exams, and they make for good exam practise too.  English only the other hand can go suck a fat one!

Since when do you go to my school!

This is like our chem.
We are having outside school classes that teachers are trying to make us go to as we aren't going to finish in time, our next chem sac is in less then a week and we don't even know what it's on..

Well you can look at your Chem and Bio SACs as revision.

The rest however, it kind of sucks and i can see the problem of dividing time.

One of my teachers overheard a student stressing out saying they haven't started revising at all for midyears. His advice was something like "Just use the time you have left, efficiently. That's all you can really do." It sounds simple but really, that is all you can do.

Try get rid of things that hold you back. I get massively distracted at home, so untill exams im planning on staying at the local library near my school till 8pm (when it shuts). There have been days when i came home and did no work all day, i procrastinate heaps, so eliminate anything that is wasting your time.

I guess try prioritise your SACs in order of how bad you'll do in them if you don't study and how bad it will affect you VS the time you have left to study for it.

Use time you didn't even think you had, on my ~30 minute bus ride, i stare out the window or listen to music half the time. I should probably start reading or something on the bus. That's 1 hour each day (30 minutes up and 30 back) that i just waste all day.

Maybe try find more efficient ways of studying or note-taking, google will help with that.

Cant think of any advice, you've only got a set amount of time, theres only so much you can do with it and exams are close. Thats the reality of it, not much you can do to change it only enhance how you use it a little. In the end we still only have 2 weeks left.

SACs for the subject you have a mid-year exam on arent too bad. If anything, theyre good because they force you to pick up your intensity and you need to know the same stuff for the actual exam.
Its the SACs for subjects that dont have mid-years that get in the way.

We get SWOT VAC at the end of year........

Yeah I got 4 sacs coming in the 2 weeks remaining before the midyears.. havnt touched physics papers yet...:S

Methods and further teachers organised SAC for after midyears, my methods teacher keeps telling us how he would skip school to study for exams if he was in our position.

And I am actually planning on not going to school twice next week, days which I have spares on, so I can keep spamming practice papers.

A good midyear mark is going to affect your study score a LOT more than a few dropped ranks. Seriously. I'm speaking from wayyyy too much experience.

I finish october 11 or something so its like 3 weeks off. If youre starting to revise for exams 3 weeks before you have them then you arent giving yourself the best shot.

The reason most schools have SACS around May is because this is when you should have enough knowledge to do a decent SAC. Any earlier - it really cant be assessed, any later - well, its no longer a unit 3 sac.
As for management, that's a school based issue. My school generally does it well - usually its planned so most people if they had a SAC, would only have one in a week, but sometimes its two, or if its a minor sac/subject then it may be two. Three if you are really unlucky.

I can't believe your school's so organised in comparison to mine. I have SACs in all of my subjects in the next two weeks... including the extended methods analysis task.

Come back for Term 3 and its subject choices/VCE info sessions and the lot. I kno' i have all my subjs in my sig wit a 99% probability of staying that way but all my mates are doing biology over pysch.. :-\

the amount of rote learning my y10 friends are doing for Biology Unit ONE is outstanding :o I'm cruising along in Pyschology U1 with minimal effort. Also it seems that biology is much more competetive hence the +1 scaling :P

Same, there is a lot of parrot learning, but you've really got to understand what you're learning. Yeah, biology unit 1 is more than I ever thought it would be, but biology's really interesting, learnt lots of new stuff. :)

see this is why Pysch rules; you don't need to understand. You memorise the definition, you get the marks. For example our recent SAC [ 21/22 ] was all definitions of lifespan development ie. Object permanence is the understanding that objects still exist even if they can't be seen or touched. You do not have to relate this to say "peek-a-boo" for babies and why they enjoy it...you just rote learn the definition ;)

Agreed. You can understand the stuff but in order to go well in exams (that is, the short answer), you have to remember those "perfect" responses. Gah.

Omg I got an English sac as well, which I am not anywhere READY for. Apparently in the VCAA guide booklet thing teachers have to give us at least 2 weeks notice before a SAC... that sure isn't happening at my school :(

sorry i wasn't clear, i was adding on to what they were talking about, psych only .__.

chem doesn't really have much rote learning though, i've done none so far- dont think its necessary.

Hmm not much rote-learning in chem though, just have to remember the definitions of the different structures of protein and DNA- had a sac on it today :O
Grrr annoyed at psychology, it's 100% remembering facts T__T (dreading short answer)

Agreed. A few psych definitions are extremely long and seem unnecessary as well...
Biology is just application and following the rules so that examiners give you the mark

That's why I like biology :) People say biology is rote learning but I really do not see how it is.... actually I guess there is a little, but not much.

i doubt you could generalise that. At my school there are way more biology students hence your first statement of bio > pysch is true but bio is far more competitive then psychology...
Title: Re: OMG its all coming down on me ):
Post by: stonecold on May 28, 2010, 10:30:42 pm
I get where you're coming from, but with Psyc, it is like Further, you can't lose many marks if you are aiming high.  Then on top of that, it scales down.

With Bio, you can lose like 6 marks on each exam for a 50! That is crazy!  If you put in for Bio, you will get a descent result.  Psyc on the other hand, every mistake will hurt you big time, and then on top of that the scaling is shit...
