Hi,
I'm having difficulties doing six subjects at the moment and am quite stressed. I am no longer doing any homework for methods and despite still having a pretty solid average i don't really think there's much point in me doing it since it takes up quite a lot of time, even though with the very little work i do now getting 30+ will be fine. (I wouldn't drop uni chem since that takes up little time, and i could work on it more if i wasn't doing methods anyway, i just have to cram heaps for the exam><)
If i drop it i'll have much more time to focus on my other subjects during the day and wont feel guilty about not doing homework for methods, and have more time after school too since i still study for the SACs (i wont for the one coming up though) and definitely for exams. (if i'm doing this subject there's no way i could neglect it completely..)
Since most of the courses i want to do don't require methods it's fine (medicine, college in USA even - although i won't be accepted)..... except if i do end up deciding i want to go to melbourne uni i will most likely just do it by distance next year during my gap year and have plenty of time to do it via this way.
Is this a bad idea? Or should i stick with it? What would you do...
Thanks
Vexxx

Bad idea, stick with it.
-
I say DONT DO EET.
Methods is important.
How are you doing in your other subjects, though? I'd say drop further if you really insist on dropping something.
-
Nahh further is so easy, and i'm hoping to be in my top four along with chem and p.e. which are my two best subjects. methods will only bring my score down as it takes up time, and it's going to be my 7th anyway.. chances are my course i end up doing won't require methods.
but you both say to keep doing it, i hate it so much haha i just don't see any point in doing it..
why's it a bad idea mao then??
-
Looks to me from the way you've phrased it you've already decided, you just want people to back up your decision.
I'd say go for it, if it's really true that you won't need it for uni and you think it's holding you back in other subjects and perhaps might lower your final aggregate, then you may as well drop it. It's not like methods maths is particularly interesting anyway.
-
Mmm I quit Chinese so I can tell you what it's like to drop from 6 subjects to 5.
You don't gain as much time as you think you do. I still find my workload somewhat overwhelming despite having only 4 subjects to focus. But then again, I was already doing absolutely no work for Chinese for like 4-5 weeks before I dropped it, so you might have a different experience. School is a lot more relaxing now that I have one extra spare a day, however this doesn't mean I get a lot more work done since spares aren't productive unless you spend go somewhere isolated.
-
don't do it. trust me, just don't. I dropped legal at the start of the year and it has not help that much at all.
If you want someone to convice you to keep it, talk to ed cliff in ur muep class tomorrow and tell him to tell you the story of his idiot best friend called daniel tram who dropped legal whihc was a shit decision. Trust me, ed can be very pursuasive.....

nahh i haven't decided i was just in a real anti-methods mood then, so unsure right now again>< i hate maths haha its not even hard its just boring and annoying.

yeah , i'd probably be like you since i'm doing zero work for it anyway, but the spares during the day will be incredible. i'm only going to go maybe half the methods classes in the next 2-3 weeks again so i've half dropped it, but i'm sitll doing it and will probably be asked to leave anyway if i keep this up/ get dets, etc. so i need to decide whether to drop or keep, this is so hard~ even if i'm quite certain about doing a gap-year next year anyway. arghhh

why was it a bad decision? you did amazing last year so you didn't need to do legal? i'm sure you'll do amazing without it and it's not like it's a prereq.

xD then you so should have done Spesh, I have 3 Spesh problems atm that I have no idea how to solve >.<

i meant maths as in methods.. i doubt that spesh would be easy haha..

I voted don't drop it.
I'm bad at methods and i hate it, it gives me heaps of homework (which i dont do half the time..might explain why im bad) and i would love to drop it.
I keep it for two reasons:
1) I know it doesnt seem like it now but you may change your mind on what you want, you dont want to be locked in.
2)Say you dont get into medicine, what are your backups, i can think of biomed and science all of which need methods... For this reason i take it... You sound confident you'll get into med... surely you need backups?
You also only really listed 1 course when you said the course(s) you want to get into dont need methods...*shrug*
Anyway i say keep it
-
Keep it. It's more useful than further and also serves as a good backup if you dont get into your course. Considering your not doing work for methods dropping it wont free up much time at all. I think you should drop further because it is pretty much useless for the future.
-

I'm pretty much wasting my spares now. like i coud;ve done well in legal, i was up there in scores last year and my teaceher said he would be surprised if i got below 40. I the thing is, to get what i want, chinese can't be in my top 4 and that means that i need to ace all three of my subjects this year whihc is really risky to bank on. Wiht legal, it wodn;t be a hell of a lot of work, it gives me a back up and you just never know, it could've been my top subject, if you just an awesome day.
And trust me when i say that more free time does not mean a higher score in others. You might as well subject yourself to one year of hell and you'll know you can cope with whatever gets thrown at you in future.
-
Is 6 subjects in year 12 survivable if you have really good time management skills?
-
lol, i'm pretty sure six subjects would FORCE you to get good at time management......and azure, don't even bother going there, srly, just do the two in year 11 and four plus uni in yr 12, don;t bother with going ANYWHERE NEAR six subjects in eyar 12 afer aceing two in yr 11 which you will :)

i dont understand why people keep saying that i think i'm confident that i'll get in.
i'm extremely under-confident, there's a reason i don't have a set date for getting into medicine on my signature..
well the courses i want to do don't require methods except one course. my first preferences are those of american colleges (don't need methods) then its UNSW and Monash (neither methods) and then UQ's Dual degree which does require methods but i would definitely take a gap year before moving to uq so i could easily do it via distance with minimal work..

i would never drop further for very obvious reasons :p

this makes sense, i can understand the feeling exactly. except i know for a fact methods wont be in my top four anyway and most likely be my 7th so there;s no way i could feel what your feeling nw, besides, i absolutely hate maths and i know if i have a higher work load in the future it will be fine since i'll be doing what i want to do.
..
argh you have all convinced me to stick with it, i'll try and speak to my teacher about not attending most classes tomorrow then :P haha ><

Depends on the individual not just time management.

nah i have the absolute worst time management htat has gotten worse due to the fact i am too stressesd to do any homework because i have so much >< luckily i am not going to even attempt methods so thats some stress load off~ i wont do well at all this year anyway (due to english) so i may be forced to repeat next year..i guess i'll not have to worry about methods then

If you want to go to the US, keep methods. They prefer well rounded students, and maths is honestly a core subject.

Yeah but u may screw up the further exam and get raped on scaling. if i were u i would drop Further or Phys Ed. since u dont need them for anything.
And yer i assumed this as well....

I'm already doing another maths subject, and my SATs will consist on two maths (with only one submitted) and chem, if i stayed with methods they would think i was certainly not an all around student. but yeah i may stay with it anywayy

:\
Sorry but that's the worst suggestion ever, if you were me you would laughing at that comment considering phys ed is towards one of my best subjects and further is so easy that a 45+ is not going to be hard, without either i have no chance at doing well. let's see, getting 46 in further or 40 in methods? clearly im not wasting my time on methods when furhter requires no work, and i have potential to get a high score unlike methods at all. scaling is not that bad so i'll be fine.. my subjects are chosen purely for a score i don't care about anything else..
and if i do screw up taht badly i'm repeating next year so problem solved ><
-
I thought a 45+ in further would require that you drop pretty much no marks in the exams because of how competitive it is? And unless methods this year is like it was in 2006, you can afford to drop quite a few to get 40...
-

further is pretty much one mark per study score point, i've looked at the exams and they are really easy, ive spoke to so many people who smashed further with ease and it's the reasn i decided to do it. umm i think you need to do further to see how ridiculously easy it is. and people told me that getting a 40 in methods is not at all easy and requires so much work to achieve this.. maths is boring imnot wasting time on a 'maybe' for methods, when i know that by doing work for further i can do well..><
anyway this has gotten sidetracked.
for now i'll try and see if i can get exemption for most of the methods classes because i'll only do it as a prereq. i'll post here if i cant as that's another problem!
-
I am currently doing 5 subjects overall. Originally I wanted to drop methods as well, but its a prereq for my course (damnit).
But I was doing spesh as well, and I thought focusing on spesh would be easier.
But I would advise against dropping methods if anything. Further is a better choice to drop because if you make one silly mistake, you've lost a whole heap of marks plus scaled down.
But yeah - you lock out 99.95 straight away because you can't get a high enough aggregate
-
I would keep it. You might need it later, especially if you are indecisive like me. Then you wont have any regrets later on.

Spesh without methods:o
and don't worry i'm not aiming for the high 99's so it's fine ^^

haha i hate indecisiveness. FINEEE, i'll keeeeep it argghhh (for not at least but not going to class for awhile xD)
-
Haha I was indecisive for weeks on dropping Chinese, actually I was thinking about dropping it before school year even started. Right now I don't really regret it, but nor do I feel proud for doing it. There are beneficial and detrimental consequences which cancel out to create a neutral feeling lol.

1 ~ Almost certain 7th subject
2 ~ I was doing absolutely no work for it and was still pressed for time with my other subjects, so I really couldn't see how things would work out when I would have to prepare for Chinese exam
I didn't hate the subject however, it was probably one of my favourite subjects tbh.

Wow really 7th subject? Even with the scaling?
Yeah true Chinese is gonna be a bitch come exam time. I hate it now probably cause of my teacher. But no chance of dropping it, parents would disown me. LOL
-
i cant see how anyone can do chinese in year 12 along with 6 subjects, its so insane, u have to memorise shitloads of stuff if u wanna do well, or maybe u just get lucky and still do well but the latter has a smaller probability
-

haha i'm so jealous that you had the subject being one that isn't a preq! ><'
but yeah i get what your saying but still, so much better to just drop it.

Do you really think it will be that bad? I'm already doing my general conversation and detailed study this year too...
OT: If you think methods is going to be your 7th subject and that you can easily achieve about 30 in it then you may was well continue it and with minimal effort it serves as a pre-requisite for many uni courses.
-
I dono about others but personally if i had to do chinese in year 12, i would do either really good in chinese and bad in other subjects or do good in other subjects and bad in chinese, a tradeoff.
-
Ohh well I'm only aiming for a 36+ raw. I've heard a lot of mixed stories about people who are really good at chinese and still only getting about 38 although I can't say I'm good at chinese
