Title: Engineering?
Post by: IntoTheNewWorld on June 13, 2010, 04:15:44 pm
Hi VN,

I'm gradually starting to realise I may have chosen the wrong degree (Commerce/Business Information Systems). I don't particularly like Commerce, and Business Information Systems is too applied to business for my liking. I don't really don't know what I want to do anymore. I've spent the last week or so trawling through course guides instead of studying, which doesn't help my chances of transferring ^^;

I'm currently considering a few other options, namely Software Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering/Sci (Computer Science), Engineering (Mechanical)/Sci (Computer Science). I've done a programming subject this semester, and it is by far my favourite subject. But reading through forums such as whirlpool seem to paint a picture of the Australian IT industry as a dead end, so I don't know whether or not it's a good idea...

Basically what I want to know is, is Engineering super hard/interesting? I didn't even consider Engineering when choosing my preferences because I suck at maths. I actually liked doing the calculations in physics though, but that could be because it was easy, but it may have because it was applied to more realistic situations, I don't know.

Thanks.

SMRANDMAZN!!!!!

You've made the right choice!!!!!!

Im doing mechatronics eng and Science, but Im dropping science at the end of the semester because I loathe FIT1002 lol.

Engineering isn't too maths intensive yet, the only eng unit Im doing now is Electrical Systems ( ENG1030) and by the looks of it, its just number plugging and playing around with a few complicated circuits. Right now, I cant say that its too interesting but it will get better once you start 2nd year.

Dunno if it interests you, but in 2nd year mechatronics you get to work on a group project and in later years you get to study units such as Intelligent Robotics, and Artificial Perception.

if you have any more questions just PM me

WAT?!
I understand your move to ditch bbis - but commerce too?! *SHOCKED*

Pretty sure IT skills are in pretty high demand? You might want to research it a bit. I have a friend who is doing a degree in programming, which doesn't involve maths or engineering, but that's at Swinburne and I don't know what the job opportunities are like.

COMMERCE </3

HOW COME EVERYONE HATES FIT1002?

hmm I dunno, tech forums seem to say something else =S

Maybe you should do some research in to what sort of areas are high in demand. It seems silly to base your career choice around the atmosphere in a forum, but I guess it's probably a difficult thing to fathom. The job market is always changing I guess.

yeah...I'm changing my mind every day now =S

I'm currently thinking of Bachelor of Software Engineering. I don't really have that much of an interest in hardware compared to the software side of things. If things don't work out I can always  do a Masters in something else I guess, but hopefully it won't come down to that =]

It's really terrible to hear that you're feeling a bit lost right now, but you really should focus on exams and worry about this afterward... if you don't have the marks, you're not going to be able to transfer...

hmm and I think the course transfer forms for engineering are due on the 16th, but I cant really remember.

yeah, that would be ironic looking up course guides to get my exams got screwed over and I can't transfer... ^^;

ah kk thx. I'm going Monash today to spam course transfer forms to everything I have a vague interest in. But right now I'm still leaning towards Software Engineering, even though I change my mind all the time ^^;

Update: I ended up only applying for Software Engineering mid year transfer, and just received an offer for it today (before exam results wtf?).

I still don't know what I want to do with my life, so I guess I should just do a course that interests me ^^; Hopefully this works out well 10 years from now ><

Just out of interest, why were you so dedicated to VCE if you didn't know what you wanted to do with your ENTER score?

So you can have more options when choosing what you want to do after school! And nothing is wrong with being dedicated :)

Mainly because I didn't want to lose to my friends lol, that would make me feel bad.

...But in the end I did end up losing to most of them, fml

Don't know about him, but I'm more or less doing it for kicks. When I started VCE I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do either, so I just told anyone that asked I wanted to do law, although in truth I didn't care about that.

You thought your friends wouldn't like you if you weren't dedicated to VCE? Btw, I ironically got a 98.95 when I needed a 90 for guaranteed enty to my first preference. Go figure.

er, it was more that I wanted to get higher than them purely for my ego...?

Oh sorry I missed the word 'to'. I have really bad eyes. I thought you thought you would lose your friends if your marks weren't high. That's a bit crazy.
